The Wahkiakum High School volleyball season will begin August 23 with practice from 9 a.m. to noon. The American Red Cross Blood Services is urging blood donors to take time to donate blood or platelets. They are especially looking for new donors to help combat the region's blood shortage. Any healthy person at 18 or over, or 16-17 with signed parental consent, and weighing at least 110 pounds may be eligible to donate blood. Valid identification is required for all blood donations. Dr. Paul Schneider and Carol Wegdahl are organizing a team of health care professionals to provide free athletic physicals to Wahkiakum student athletes. The physicals will be given from 9 a.m. to noon on August 21, at the Cathlamet Fire Hall. The physicals will be given on a first-come first-served basis. Two weeks already, since our home burned. We are settling in to our motorhome, making minor repairs, since it hasn’t been used in 10 years, and looking forward. Better than looking back I’d say. WSU Wahkiakum County Extension is teaching a summer food preservation class series free of charge to local youth and adults. MIXED START--As this week begins, Sunday was warming up real quick. Our morning clouds that had been hanging around almost all day recently, gave way to sun so it was feeling quite warm to me as I was attacking the weeds in my flower beds. CLOUDY--As this work week begins, it's pretty cloudy in the morning, but the cloudiness is not supposed to mean any rain. CLOUDY BEGINNING--As this week began, we saw lots of clouds and many complained about not seeing the sun, but it really was perfect weather for outside work as it was dry, around 70 and it kept the "it's too hot outside" excuses away from those who were intent on getting some yardwork done. HEATING UP--By the time you read this, we are supposed to be experiencing some hot, hot, hot weather and I can hear people complaining already. First it's too wet and cold and then it's too hot, it would have been nice to have a week of dry 75 to 80 degree weather, without going from one extreme to the other. It was a wonderful weekend despite the rain and unpredictable weather. With more than 20 family members staying for a few days, we were either cooking or playing, and had a few tents set up for extra sleeping quarters. It’s so nice to have this many family members in the same place at the same time. COOLER--We've started this work week a bit cooler, as we had some cloud cover and some light sprinkles and more are due I hear, but we sure had a great few days last week and a super weekend as well. Cathlamet Public Library’s Summer Reading Program will begin next Thursday (July 7) and will be held every Wednesday for six-weeks, through August 11.
