The Inn at Crippen Creek Farm will no longer be baking artisan breads for the retail market. "Our Bed and Breakfast and farm activities are taking more of our time. We thank all of you who have been such wonderful customers from Cathlamet Market, Two Islands Farm Market and as bread subscribers," said Kitty Speranza. The Inn will continue to offer cooking classes which includes artisan breads and will be available for baking bread for special events by request...
SAW THE SUN--Last Saturday was certainly gorgeous and it got flat hot outside. My skin starting turning dark pink after a short time of being out in my flower beds. By the following morning though, it was so foggy and socked in, the ground was all wet and the trees were dripping, so at first, I thought it was raining. It sure was a far cry from the blue skies the morning before. The sun finally came out later in the afternoon but it was accompanied by a lot of wind. Monday brought us more overcast weather, while in Seattle they still had a...
School’s out, but where is summer? Only a few teaser days so far, so that must mean it will be a warm late summer, right? After our whirlwind weekend last weekend it was great to come home and just sit for a while. We attended a high school graduation in Redmond. Oregon on Friday night for our grandson and got up the next morning for the four hour drive to Ellensburg for the college graduation at 1:30 p.m. Lots of driving and lots of celebrating (not to mention, while in Oregon, we celebrated three birthdays as well). Time certainly does f...
PERFECT--No matter that it was raining last Friday or that it was just an all day soaker on Sunday, what really mattered was that on Saturday, the Wahkiakum Dollars for Scholars annual car show and sturgeon derby was basking in sunshine all day long down here in Skamokawa at the fairgrounds and surrounding area! Everyone involved had all been holding their breath all week long, so when I woke up and saw the fog, I knew we'd have sunshine soon to follow, so it worked out perfect! There were over 200 awesome cars and trucks registered this year...

The winner's artwork will be prominently displayed at the park garden site. Mail entries to Wahkiakum County Health Department, PO Box 696, Cathlamet, WA 98612. Entries may also be taken to the Health Department office at 64...
It is beginning to look like the warmer weather will be here sometime soon. The sun has actually shown a few days in a row, as well. I also see plants poking their heads up out of the gardens, so maybe, just maybe we will have a summer this year. News from Naselle: High school graduation! A whole new chapter in life for the class of 2010, after 13 years in school, muddling through all the pains and joys of growing up to this point, and now—where to from here? Just coming this far has been a huge accomplishment for many and we need to commend th...

SOGGY--Well, most of this past Memorial weekend was pretty damp I'm afraid. There were a few hours on a couple of days where it was not raining and not too terribly cold, but if you were out camping, you would probably not think this was the most terrific weather for doing so. I know walking around through wet grass or mud puddles is not that much fun, and neither is loading up those wet tents and things when the weekend is over, so hopefully you stayed late enough that you got to dry things out when that sunshine finally showed up about 3 p.m....

As I sit here writing this column, I’m more than a little sore after a wonderful weekend with our kids in central Oregon and our oldest son and his family from California. On a whim we decided to try out our new rain gear and make the trip on the Harley. It worked out great except that my husband’s boots weren’t waterproof. Needless to say, wet, cold feet don’t make a guy very happy. After a five-hour ride, we arrived and began to enjoy the weekend. On Saturday we headed to Smith Rock for some hiking and four hours later we were all headed...

WET--It's hard to believe that we're at the end of another month and well into Spring, but we are still experiencing plenty of rain. We got a bit of a break on the first day of this work week but as Tuesday morning rolled around, it was pouring once again. The forecast was not looking too great, so we can only hope that a batch of wind shows up and blows these rain clouds elsewhere, as this soggy and nippy weather is sure getting old! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from May 27-June 2 are Don Anderson, 67'er Linda Toste, Mary Ann...
Is it ever going to be spring? It has been so cold; I’m surprised any gardens are growing. Some folks haven’t even planted yet. Hopefully it will warm up soon. News from Naselle: It’s hard to believe another school year is about to end. The kids that are graduating this year are the class that I volunteered in when we first moved here. This class has come a long way and we should be very proud of them. No matter what they choose to do, I wish them well, and much success. On that note, I have received a graduation invitation from one of those...
MIXED BAG--Last weekend was nice and even as the work week begins, the sun is shining after some night time showers. However, it's pretty wet out there this Tuesday morning, and it looks like rain is going to fall most of the week. I guess we'll have to be busy as beavers while the sun is shining and hope the following weekend is nice, but it only looks like Sunday will be. Temperatures are supposed to drop mid-week and the snow levels are dropping to 3,000 feet so I guess we can't put away those warm jackets just yet. SPECIAL DAYS--Those...
I’m sure everyone is aware that the iconic Rosburg Store is closed as of Monday, the 17th. The only information I have is that it will be closed indefinitely. What a gorgeous weekend. Now it looks like some more unwelcome rain and stormy weather is on the agenda for the rest of the week. News from Naselle: There will be a District track meet on Thursday at Raymond. Girl’s pole vault will start at 3:30 p.m. and the other events will follow. Go Comets! Are you looking for something fun to do on a weekend or two this summer? Hosts are needed at th...

Some plant starts and seeds are available but participants are asked to bring their own tools. The WSU Extension's 4-H Media Club will be on hand to film activities. Dress for the weather; light showers are...
GREAT WEEKEND WEATHER--Mother's Day weekend couldn't have been nicer--sunshine and warmth! It's about time! I know it seemed to bring everybody out and most folks seem to have perked up and got into a better mood; the sunshine will do that for you, so I hope we see more of it in the days ahead. Of course, I'm talking the hours prior to Sunday evening, as the wind picked up, the clouds rolled in and it got pretty nippy, but up until then, it was great. The beginning of this work week has not been so kind; it was wet and nasty for most of Monday...
There will be a Republican Party meeting to hear candidates for Congress and Senate on May 18 at 7 p.m. Speakers include Paul Akers, who is running for Senate and David Castillo, Jaime Herrera and Chris Boyed who are all running for Congress. The meeting will be on the third floor of the Wahkiakum Courthouse, 64 Main Street in Cathlamet. For more information, contact Richard Riley at 562-6586....
SPOTTY--Our sunshine has been sort of hit and miss lately, and the days that had been forecast for sunny last week, were pretty spotty. Wound up being more clouds and rain showers than sun I think. Of course, it all depended on where you were, as I heard some folks were able to mow their lawns, while others would have been needing a snorkel to manage that! It looks like we may have a few days of dry weather by the time this gets delivered, so I sure hope so as the "April Showers" are getting a little old and the hail and the pounding rains...

It’s hard to decide if you need shorts and sunscreen or your heavy coat and raingear with this unpredictable weather. We actually had snowflakes this morning. I’m sure the gardener’s are scratching their heads and wondering when to plant. News from Naselle: This year Naselle Elementary School celebrated Earth Day on April 22. Grades K-5 students were engaged in several activities, which focused on protecting our earth throughout the day. The key objectives taught were reuse, recycle and reduc...
