Photo of the Week: Darlene Warra Bjornsgard. Just a few days ago, we lost a woman whose life impacted many. Darlene was hospitable, generous, and always family first. Here is a quote from Scott Johnson on Facebook that illustrates so well what this woman meant to all of us. He told a story that is an example of the love and care both Darlene and Paul have given to so many here. His message reflects how the community remembers Darlene with such respect and gratitude. "I will always remember that...
Another wonderful Shop With a Cop will go down in the books as one of the best days of the year! We couldn't have done it without all the donors, volunteers, officers, and first responders' other halves who gave their time and heart to spend time rounding up gifts with children in our county last Saturday. There are too many volunteers to name but I'd like a special shout out to the donors who gave so graciously to make this event happen! Donors include: Beau Renfro, The Duck Inn, Our Saviours...

Thought for the week: "The smallest stone can make a ripple on the water." As we get closer to Christmas Day, please take time to ponder these words. Your gifts aren't as important as you yourself are in a relationship. The little touches, the kind words of endearment, the look that says, "I'm here with you." These gestures mean so much. They are the best gifts. Photo of the Week: A stunning house in Seaside built by Apple Roofing of Rosburg/Altoona Pillar Rock. Over the past days, Christopher...
"The Mayor and Council of Cathlamet are very grateful to Mayor Paul Helenberg and the citizens of Castle Rock for the gracious gift of an oil painting by Longview artist Jim Eichelberg depicting Cathlamet from the river in the 1880s. We look forward to displaying the painting prominently at Town Hall once renovations are complete. This is a great example of SW Washington cities working together to celebrate our history and heritage."...
COLD ENOUGH? I guess it depends on where you live, but out in West Valley we were down in the lower twenties this past week and that’s plenty cold for me! It looks like we will be warming up later this week, though, so by the time you read this, it will have rained for several days. I’m not sure I like that either, but at least folks might not be sliding off the roadways on black ice. There was also freezing fog, which can take drivers by surprise. (But Skamokawa didn’t get its name from nothing; it means, “Smoke on the Water.”) There wer...
The holidays can be difficult due to sudden deaths, especially around Christmas. One unexpected death was the recent loss of Dale Dutcher from the Altoona Pillar Rock area, not too far from the end of the road. His wife, Cheryl, called to let me know. I have admired her love and loyalty for him in the years since he began to suffer from dementia, then Alzheimer's. November is Alzheimer's Awareness Month. One in eight will suffer from Alzheimer's; Dale and Cheryl were but one example in our small...
To celebrate the release of their omnibus anthology “Cascadian Zen: Writings from Cascadia in the Here and Now, Vol. I,” Watershed Press and the Seattle-based nonprofit Cascadia Poetics Lab will hold two waterfront readings on the Lower Columbia. The first reading will take place at Winekraft, in Astoria on Dec. 8; the second will be at Time Enough Books in Ilwaco on Saturday, Dec. 9. Both events are free and everyone is welcome. Cascadian Zen is an omnibus anthology featuring poetry and prose from writers throughout the region, including Gary...
The Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco will extend its special exhibit “Chinuk Ntsayka! We are Chinook: Photographs by Amiran White.” The well-received exhibit was set to end on Nov. 11, but will continue until Dec. 16 due to its popularity. The exhibit features photographs by Amiran White, who has documented the Chinook Indian Nation and their decades-long fight for federal recognition for the past eight years. White, who grew up in United Kingdom, began her photojournalism career as a stringer for the Associated Press in Portland. She...

WET BEGINNING. As I started this column, it was a gloomy and damp Sunday morning after a very wet and windy Saturday night. Thankfully, by afternoon, we got to see some sunshine; that was a welcome break. By the time you read this, it's supposed to have been sunny and clear for several days. That will make for a nice Thanksgiving weekend. Of course, clear weather also seems to mean a big drop in our nighttime temperatures, so keep that in mind before you wind up with frozen hoses or outside spigots. Since we had several nights below freezing...
A Veteran's Navy Reunion Joel and Noreen Fitts of Grays River recently returned from a trip to Sparks, Nevada where a Naval Reunion was held at the Nugget Casino. All the sailors from the USS Hancock A-19 aircraft carrier where Joel served on the flight deck with the catapult and rescue gear during the Vietnam war, were invited. He reported, "I was an Aviation Bosun, 3rd Class. My duty station from 1959 to 1964 was on a Super Aircraft Carrier. We lost a lot of boys during that time. My ship was...
COLD AND WET. Well, if you're like me, the dampness we have had has made your bones ache. It's not just the cooler temperatures, but the feeling that we've been "chilled to the bone" with all that moisture that comes from the fog and the rain and the downpours. It looks like we may have some dry days this week but that also means temperatures will fall into the thirties, so there's always a trade -off when the clear days show up. However, by the weekend, it looks like a fifty-fifty shot at rain for multiple days. I'm sure my old bones will be...
While we live in what some might call a "backwater" area of southwest Washington, we are privileged to harbor artists and writers. One unique artist is Darbury Novoselic from Deep River. She is well known to folks at the Grays River Grange where often Darbury brings her bread to meals held there. Now she is showing us her love of art. Through that medium, we can see her artistry in the fiber art she creates in "the barn" on the farm where she and her husband, Krist, live. Krist clearly supports...

Submitted by Susan Gentry "We're here to honor and thank all those who served and their families," said Pastor Jeff Driscoll as he welcomed the more than 70 members of the community. Each year, Our Saviour's Lutheran Church hosts a free dinner to local residents who are connected to veterans. State Representative Joel McIntire again attended, in full Marine dress, to lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Mayor David Olson greeted the audience with his thanks for all they do to make our community specia...
Travelers headed over the river and through the woods to Grandma’s house this upcoming Thanksgiving holiday should plan now for winter weather, and expect delays on major routes. Cross-mountain travel Weather conditions over mountain passes can change rapidly. It is important for travelers to plan ahead and follow posted chain requirements. It’s often drivers who travel too fast, without traction tires or chains, or under the influence, that close a mountain pass for everyone. Practice installing chains before heading out the door. No con...
By Brandon J. Simmons On Saturday, Wahkiakum Outdoors will present for the public its latest offering, a talk by retired wildlife biologist Paul Myers, who will speak on issues effecting the local Columbia White-tailed deer population. For the past five years, Wahkiakum Outdoors has offered local residents opportunities to learn more about the local environment. Wahkiakum resident Michael Passmore, himself an expert in wildlife ecology, started the group while he was a member of the Wahkiakum Community Center in Cathlamet. He saw it as an...
In September, The Wahkiakum Lions Club has honored Daniel Spisla-Hongel as their student of the month. Daniel is involved in school and community activities and has given more than 200 volunteer service hours. He is been active in leadership and ASB. He hopes to go to college and be involved in sports while getting a business degree to pursue a career in real estate....
PLENTY WET—If you have driven around much lately, you will probably have been driving in the rain, I hope with your headlights on, and you will have seen fields full of water here and there; we had some epic rainfall at the end of last week. This past week was supposed to be mostly wet with a couple of dry days while this coming week looks pretty soggy. I can only hope this forecast changes or I'll have to get out my boat to get anywhere! I hope you're all taking it easy as you travel to and fro during this wet weather, and watch for falling t...
I've saved the following quote for many years. I don't remember where it came from, but we can use reminders like this often. I suspect it has some cowboy in it. My husband was a true horseman, the kind that worked with herds of horses at the same time, and they all loved him. In his elder years, he was hired to live in a small apartment in a large barn with extremely valuable horses so that if needed, he could be with them in the stalls at night when the mares were in labor, or the foals...
Wahkiakum V.F.W. Post 5297 will soon begin its November Fundraising drive Friday. From November 10-17, Buddy Poppy donation containers will be placed at local businesses. On Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., the V.F.W. will host a booth outside the Cathlamet Market....
VERY COLD—Well, I don't know about where you live, but out here in West Valley, we saw temperatures plummet down into the low twenties on both Friday and Saturday nights, and I can tell you that my old bones were not appreciative of such frigid conditions. While Fall is here and cooler and damper conditions are expected, these particular temperatures belong to Winter weather and I hope they will not become a frequent thing just yet, way too cold for me. The forecast several days after this comes out on Thursday, shows a very wet pattern so n...
Looking at the Letters to the Editor, I see that I've created a hornet's nest. The two last articles about school board meetings have been my own opinion more than a report. The second one was not titled as an opinion piece, but those who read it know that, I'm sure. Now back to my regular Dispatch written last Saturday. Great God All'mighty what a gorgeous day. It's Saturday. "It's a lovely day today, so whatever you've got to do, you've got a lovely day to do it in, it's true, so if you've...
