There are six girls vying to be Queen of the Wahkiakum County Fair this year. It may sound romantic, but there is a bit of work involved. It's a bit like a summer job, according to Fair Manager Patty Dursteler. "The girls are responsible for fund raising," Dursteler said. Nordic American Voices, an oral history project, was launched by the Nordic Heritage Museum in 2009 with the mission to collect, preserve, and share the life histories of Nordic immigrants and their descendants in the Pacific Northwest. The members of the Patriot’s Club at Wahkiakum High School have undertaken a bold endeavor. They are trying to raise $5000 for a motorized, retractable flag to descend like a projector screen from the ceiling of the gym. After taking some time off for some necessary repairs, Redmen Hall had its grand re-opening on Saturday from 12-4 p.m., with refreshments and a net mending demonstration from local fishermen Kent Martin and Gary Emery. The Care Careers Academy will offer an evening CNA program starting July 7 from 5-9:30 p.m. through August 20. An accelerated daytime CNA program starts July 30 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and will finish on September 4. Cemetery District #1 issued a reminder this week to the public concerning pets and decorations. No pets are allowed in the cemetery. The cemetery district will not be responsible for lost or stolen articles, including vases, markers, name bars, etc. A previous policy is still in effect concerning articles placed at the cemetery.
