Fund started to house fire victim

News from Naselle:

The Finnish American Folk Festival will be here before we know it. July 25th through the 27th are the dates you should set aside and make your way to Naselle for history, dancing, music and fantastic food. This event is always a crowd pleaser. Bring the whole family and enjoy an event filled weekend. There is something for everyone. Check out their website and Facebook page for scheduled events.

You may remember the stories of the crow family who took up residence at the site of the “Mochas and More” coffee/espresso shop in Naselle. It has been two years of ups and downs with Rob, his mate Robette and their offspring, Robie (the little thief who really liked blueberry muffins}. It seems that Rob and Robette have disappeared, and now Robie has a family of his own, and is still in the area. Last week one of the babies fell from the nes,t and Laura managed to get it back up into the tree, but not without being dive bombed by the parent birds. You are a good Samaritan, Laura, even though they don’t seem to appreciate your efforts. Maybe you should have given Robie a muffin while you were trying to help the baby bird.

Westend news:

My heart goes out to another local resident, Kathy Hamilton of Rosburg, who has lost her home to a fire. This is one of the most devastating disasters that anyone can go through, especially when you lose almost everything that you can never replace, personal items such as pictures, family mementos, etc. Kathy’s home burned last week, and she is working on picking up the pieces with lots of support from friends and family. There are many people asking if they can help and an account has been set up for that purpose at the Bank of the Pacific. Donations can be made to the Kathy Hamilton Fire Fund at any branch, cash can be deposited and checks may be made out to Kathy.

This Sunday, everyone is invited to the annual Community Picnic/Potluck being held at Johnson Park in Rosburg (the old Rosburg School) from noon to 4 p.m.. Hot dogs, hamburgers with condiments, and lemonade will be provided. You are welcome to bring a salad or dessert to share, a bright smile and fun conversation. Here’s your opportunity to see all the changes that have been made in the building, play games, walk the nature trail and enjoy a relaxing afternoon.

The Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park would like to thank everyone who attended our second country pancake breakfast last Saturday, it was another successful event. We are getting lots of positive feedback from the attendees and we have decided to have two more breakfasts scheduled for August 9 and 30.

This week's Free Friday Night Movie is another newly released film set in a mythic New York City and spanning more than a century, and is about miracles, crossed destinies, and the age old battle between good and evil.

Synopsis: Peter Lake is a master thief, who never expected to have his own heart stolen by the beautiful Beverly Penn. Their love is star-crossed however, as she has a deadly form of consumption, and Peter has been marked for a violent death by his former mentor, the demonic Pearly Soames. Peter desperately tries to save his true love, across time, against the forces of darkness, even as Pearly does everything in his power to take him down. What Peter needs is a miracle, but only time will tell if he can find one. Rated PG-13.

I don’t know about you, but I appreciate being able to go the post office in Rosburg, pick up mail, buy stamps, send packages and say hi to our postmaster, Brad. Now it looks like the Postal Service is talking about cutting the hours in half or worse yet, closing the Post Office and moving our mail service to another location or offering roadside service. You should have received a survey in your mail a couple of weeks ago, to fill out and return with your comments. If you have not done so, please get them in as soon as possible. If you did not receive a survey, you can pick one up at the post office.

After you have mailed your survey back, make plans to attend the meeting that the Postal Service will be holding on July 28, 6 p.m., in the Rosburg Hall to answer questions and provide additional information about their POST Plan. At the meeting, the local management will share the results of the survey; however the Postal Service will not make any decisions until after the public meeting.

The convenience of a local post office is essential for many of the people in our area, who would have to drive many miles to Naselle or Cathlamet for stamps, to send packages, and any other business they might need to do at the site. Though we are not an area with many businesses, we do have a population that utilizes our post office regularly and it would certainly be inconvenient for many of us, especially those who don’t drive far from home, or depend on a ride to take care of postal business. Let’s let the Postal Service know how much we need to keep our post office intact and operating here in Rosburg.
