Becky Ledtke, Wah. County Fair Manager|Nov 29, 2012

Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving Dinner! I was very thankful that the high tides, big gusts of wind and inches of rain predicted did not cause severe flooding at the Fairgrounds. Earlier in the week I had asked some local volunteers, Bill Chamberlain, Ed Stevens and Jerry Ledtke, to help me watch for any approaching flood water problems as this storm moved through our County. By Monday afternoon the winds were increasing and the rain was pouring down and blowing sideways because of the high winds. We decided it was time to move...

The Wahkiakum County Fair Board would like to say thank you to the many bingo players who attended Turkey Bingo last Friday night. The winning card holders received a big turkey or a ham for their bingo. During one game, there were four bingos at the same time and Mike Backman, our number caller, had to call a bingo run-off to determine the winner. Now that’s intense bingo! We also had two games of black-out bingo; the winners were Samantha Wright and Kim Hedges. They both received a complete dinner plus a turkey. I suspect there will be some d...

The Washington State Fairs Convention held in Yakima was a great place to share ideas with fair managers and fair board members. I spent three days attending fair workshops and meeting numerous talented entertainers and am bringing home stacks of information to share with our fair board. While at the convention, I entered our 2012 Wahkiakum County Fair poster into the poster contest and it won first place! We competed with fairs who have under 9,000 people in attendance to receive a big beautiful blue and black first place ribbon....

The Two Island Farmers Market was a great place to sell the Wahkiakum County Fair Board's last packages of smoked Salmon last Friday. We completely sold out and the fund raiser was a success. Thanks again to Art Pedersen, Mike Clark of C&H Classic Smoked Fish, E&E Seafoods and the Two Islands Farmers Market for helping make this fund raising project possible. Our next fund raising raffle will be for a cord of alder firewood. We will be selling $1 raffle tickets at every Wahkiakum County Fair Board event. The alder firewood was cut recently and...

Even as the rains pour down the admission ticket booth continues to be a work in progress each day at the fairgrounds. Ben Vasion and his crew are working each night after school to complete an Eagle Scout project. With the old ticket booth removed, the crew went right to work on the foundation of the new booth. They are using pressure treated beams to support the floor. First they drilled into the concrete and added bolts that connect the concrete to the beams. Next the flooring was screwed down onto the beams. The wall structures were framed...

The weather was very wet and rainy last Saturday, but that did not stop Boy Scout Troop #883 from meeting at the fairgrounds to start an Eagle Scout project. Scout Ben Vasion needed to complete a project and asked me for project ideas a few weeks ago. We discussed a few projects, then Ben decided he would like to tear down the admission gate ticket booth and build a new one. The ticket booth had a rotten floor, the walls were in bad shape and this project needed to be completed before we could safely use the booth again. Looking over the...

Fair Premium checks are in the mail and will be delivered to your mail box in the next few days. Please cash your check as soon as you receive it! All checks need to be cashed by November 10. We are always looking for new ways to bring in funding to support our Fair. We have a new Wahkiakum County Fair Board fund raiser. We are selling delicious smoked sockeye salmon. After our fair time salmon barbecue we had a few fillets left, Commissioner Blair Brady suggested we get the salmon smoked and packaged ready to sell. The salmon was smoked at...

Fair Premium checks will be issued this week and delivered to your mail box soon. Please cash your check as soon as you receive it! Missing some eye glasses? Could you have left them at the fairgrounds during Fair time? As we were straightening up the Fairgrounds buildings we have collected three pairs of eye glasses. Please call the fairgrounds if you think a pair might be yours. Naidie Everdell wanted a few special prizes to be awarded along with the ribbons exhibitors received this year in the Cavy and Exotic Barn. After consulting with me,...

Many people attended the Wahkiakum County Fair this year, but on the last day, people came from our county and beyond to stand in line and be served a plate of barbecued Alaskan caught salmon. We enjoy preparing this delicious dinner for our fair visitors and are happy to see our community support this important fund raiser for the fair. This dinner was possible because of the generosity of Art Pedersen and E&E Foods. Art caught the salmon in Alaska, then delivered the fish to be processed to E&E Foods. Art donated the salmon, E&E Foods donated...

Visitors and friends attending the fair had a wonderful group of people to welcome them through our Wahkiakum County Fair gates. Our admission booths were staffed with some of the nicest people from our local area. I heard some comments back about being a ticket taker last August and they were all good! Maybe it was the little bag of treats Valle or Azery took to the workers about half way through their shifts. Maybe it was knowing they were needed and a big part of helping with fair time volunteer activities. We cannot thank them enough for...

My adding machine has been working overtime this week as I total up the points on the exhibitor cards for our Youth Exhibitors. The 4-H, Open Youth and FFA exhibitors were very busy creating items to enter into the Fair! The Youth building was filled up with their wonderful exhibits! In the Youth Still Life Departments, Crafts and Hobbies received the highest number of entries with 674 items entered, that’s a lot of crafts. Educational posters had the next highest amount of entries. Our young exhibitors put lots of time and effort into their p...

How many people attended our Fair this year? After totaling all the figures, we had 3,524 people come through our gates! Hope you enjoyed the entertainment, livestock shows, good food and visiting with friends each day. See you at the 2013 Wahkiakum County Fair! Did you notice the beautiful roses we have growing in our flower beds during the fair? These roses were selected by Georgie Billings for their beauty and ability to continue to survive in our rainy area. She also loaned the fair many potted plants and placed them around the fairgrounds...

I have many nice Fair time memories that I will never forget; crowning Ashley Hedges our 2012 Wahkiakum County Fair Queen and handing her a bouquet of beautiful flowers that were grown here on the fairgrounds is one. Each night flowers were selected by my staff and we arranged a new bouquet for Queen Ashley. Congratulations, Ashley, enjoy your year as Wahkiakum County Fair Queen! I hope you had a chance to look at and take a ride in the beautifully restored Model Ts in the Fairgrounds Park. Ray Badger brought to our Fair a wonderful group of...

At 9 a.m., this morning, the gates were opened and our 2012 Wahkiakum County Fair festivities and livestock shows began! The Fairgrounds is filled with still life exhibits, 4-Hers showing their animals, food vendors, game vendors, business vendors and vendors selling fun good quality products. If you want to talk to a candidate running for a position for one of our local offices, you will have a chance during the fair, as many have rented a booth. I hope you saved the flyer that I sent out with The Eagle newspaper last week, it will help you...

It’s nice to see the Wahkiakum County Fair banner hanging across SR 4 once again! This is an indication that our fair is just a few weeks away. The heavy wooden sign has also been hung over the main entrance admission gate to welcome everyone as they walk into our fair. We appreciate the Wahkiakum PUD crew and the equipment they use to handle this important task each year! We are going into high gear this week as a lot of event details are finalized. Buildings will be cleaned and decorated as we get ready for the thousands of entries that we h...

We have many painting projects to finish before fair time and received some excellent help from The Farmers 4-H Club last week! Shawn Deal, the rabbit and cavy superintendent and Deb Gribskov, poultry superintendent, brought their 4-H club to the fairgrounds twice last week. Their first project was to paint the picnic tables with blue, lavender and pink paint. Later in the week, the club returned to spend an hour applying primer paint to the new goat, sheep and swine pens. A big thank you to Taya Deal, Nanea Carroll, Teylor Sauer, Cadence...

The Fair poster is done! We hope it will attract your attention to the many livestock shows, musicians and entertainers that will be part of our fair this August. Some of the entertainers are locals who have amazing talents and will be performing on the stage throughout the three days of our Fair. Valle Ledtke created this eye catching poster using a rainbow of colors and fitting lots of information attractively into a limited space. Nice job, Valle. The second Horsemanship Challenge Series event was full of new obstacles and looked to be an...

There is a big project in progress currently at the fairgrounds; we are rebuilding the pig, sheep and goat stalls. There were 24 stalls to rebuild, most of the wood needed to be replaced and all new doors built. Each year we don’t know how many pigs, sheep or goats are coming to our Fair until after animal entry day on July 25. All the stalls will be strong enough to hold any combination of these animal exhibits. We have built 18 stalls in the last two weeks, then we had to install an underground drainage pipe which is attached to the arena g...

Last year I promised the vendors that had booths during the fair in the arena commercial area that I would try to bring in a big exhibit that would bring more people by their booths. My dream was to display our gillnet boat in this vendor area. The Wahkiakum County Fair's double-ended Columbia River Gillnet Boat has been moved to the fairgrounds arena commercial vendor area! This boat was built between 1913 and 1916 and has been in storage up on blocks sitting in its hull cradle for over 30 years. On Monday, the gillnet boat was carefully...

We enjoyed a busy successful fund raising weekend at the fairgrounds. With two events going on at the same time we attracted horse riders to our rummage sale and rummage sale shoppers to our horse event! The Horsemanship Challenge Series is a new fund raising event that is being planned and organized by Shawn and Tina Merz. The first of the series was held last Saturday. Twenty-five riders took their horses through a course that was filled with obstacles on the ground and in the air. They rode through them, over them or under them. They ran a...

A reminder to all horse riders that use the fairgrounds arena that it will be closed June 15 and June 16 as we are setting up a horse event in the arena. We are calling the new event the Horsemanship Challenge. Shawn and Tina Merz put their ideas together to plan a new horse event that actually challenges the horse and rider in three different types of events. Each rider will take their horse through two speed events, two trail events and two ranch events. Shawn and Tina are planning a three show series with the third and final event of the ser...

What a great week-end for the Dollars for Scholars events! With rain showers all week and a pretty wet day on Friday we were all very happy when the sun came out and continued to shine all Saturday afternoon. Spectators enjoyed a beautiful assortment of cars and trucks at the Rods and Reels Rod Run Show. Many bright colored flashy cars, a few high performance fast cars, plus a large group of antique cars and trucks were lined up in the fairgrounds park. Many big sturgeon were brought in to be measured for the Sturgeon Derby. There were numerous...
