Becky Ledtke, Wah. County Fair Manager|May 31, 2012

Attention all horse riders that use the fairgrounds arena: The arena will be closed to all riders from May 28 to June 3. We will be cleaning the arena building area as we prepare it for the Dollars for Scholars Event. Sorry for the inconvenience. We planned a one day used book & rummage sale last weekend but ended up with a three day sale! Lots of campers were staying at Vista Park and people were traveling on the highway pretty steady all three days. We found volunteers to help with the sales who also enjoyed a chance to visit with the many ne...

The Fairground's west side of the arena new drainage system has experienced the first big downpour of rain since we installed the big pipe underground. I am happy to report there is no standing water in sight! To finish the arena drainage project we still needed to do some ground leveling in the arena area. Bill Chamberlain brought his backhoe to the Vista Park sand dunes with plans to meet up with Shawn Merz who was bringing a dump truck for Bill to load with sand. They moved quite a bit of sand to the arena area. Then Ed Stevens smoothed and...

The Fairgrounds has a new flower bed by the arena! The sun was shining and we just returned from town with a trunk full of pretty flowers when 4-H Horse Leader Tina Merz showed up at the fairgrounds. She wanted to help accomplish a project on the fairgrounds and went right to work putting together a colorful assortment of flowers, nicely arranged in the new flower bed. Thank you, Tina! For all horse riders that use the fairgrounds arena, it will be closed to all riders from May 28 to June 3. We will be cleaning the arena building area as we...

Our new bleachers were delivered last week to the Fairgrounds. We expected them to arrive on a flat-bed truck so we could use equipment to unload them, but they arrived in an enclosed van-trailer. That changed our unloading plans! We unloaded by hand several tons of aluminum bleacher parts. Looking at their building plans, I am reminded of an erector set that we once bought my son, only this is way bigger! Thankfully, I’ve received some offers of help to get this project built when we get some nice weather. If the sun starts shining we will be...

The rummage and book sale held at the fairgrounds last week-end was a big success! Kathy Elliott and Maureen Zacher-Bockius set prices and visited with many people as they stopped by. Jerry Ledtke entertained us with some sweet sounding acoustic guitar music as we enjoyed the sunny day together and waited for more customers to stop in. If you didn’t stop by, try to attend the next sale, we have treasures and books for all ages. Watch this column for the next sale week-end announcement. The funds we raise at our sales go directly toward s...

A huge thank you to Martha and Cheryl Backman for all the planning and prize gathering they do to make these bingos a big success. Martha and Cheryl are truly dedicated volunteers! By 6 p.m. the multi-purpose room at the Grade School was filled with people ready to play bingo. The first number was called, the room turned quiet and all attention was focused on watching bingo cards. After 10 rounds of bingo, it was time for some raffle...

The Wahkiakum County Fair will be dedicated to the Grays River Grange this year. There will be an article in the Fair book that will explain to our community about the involvement Grays River Grange had in starting our Fair many years ago. Congratulations to the Grays River Grange, I am so happy that you are receiving this honor this year. A business in our community has donated some items to help support our Fair. Jester Properties is remodeling the Skamokawa Duck Inn. They had to store their tables and chairs somewhere for a few months so int...

It was time to fall a few more dangerous trees in the Fairgrounds Park. Commissioner Dan Cothren is falling those old leaning trees for us. They are big and some of them are growing in groups of many trees in a small area. Not a problem for Dan, he is an experienced timber faller. The plan was to get those trees cut down and cut up into firewood before the leaves start forming on the branches. We had a big volunteer crew cleaning up the branches and cutting up firewood last week-end. Bill Chamberlain brought his backhoe to the fairgrounds and...

Once again, it’s time to check in with all the department superintendents that volunteer their help before and during fair. These volunteers keep their exhibitor paperwork organized and their departments or barns looking great each day of the Fair. As I made phone calls and sent out many e-mails, I realized we are so lucky to have this big group of volunteers that give so freely of their time! When you pick up a fair book this year be sure to read through the list of department superintendents, we all owe them many thanks for helping create a...

It was a busy week-end at the fairgrounds with lots of horses and people enjoying our big covered arena. 4-H leader Val Rowe and her 4-H Horse Club kids, plus the parents of many of the kids and a few Pacific County Fair Board members came to look over our arena. While the 4-H Club members rode their horses, the parents, board members and I talked about the costs of building an arena like ours. We shared a potluck lunch that was delicious and then the kids saddled up their horses and took turns practicing gaming patterns for a few hours. It...

The first raffle ticket for the Valentine Diamond Dinner grand prize was drawn and set to the side to keep everyone in suspense! Blair Brady and I then drew and announced the winners of the other multiple raffle prizes we had for our guests . The winner of the diamond necklace, a bottle of champagne, a movie, a box of chocolates and a $25 gas card was Carol Ervest! Carol has got to be one of the luckiest people I know! She is one of the Fair’s most dedicated supporters and has been the 4-H Superintendent in the Youth Building during Fair for m...

A very delightful crowd filled the Skamokawa Grange last Saturday night as the Wahkiakum County Fair Board members and volunteers served a very nice dinner to over 100 guests. The Valentine Diamond Dinner was the new fair board's first fund raising event and the first time many of them had ever worked together. They are a hard working group and I am so impressed with their willingness to take on any job that needs to be staffed. The dinner preparation took many hours and then five excellent waitresses worked quickly to get the food hot off the...

We had one day of sunshine and the grass started growing at the Fairgrounds. Thanks to Larry Hendrickson and Dean Seaberg the grass will be mowed, as they brought our equipment back last week. As soon as the tractors arrived projects started getting planned and a few done. Thanks to Ed Stevens, Chuck Gaines, Mike Colver and Barb Clark the water drain is fixed behind the horse barn. As they shoveled out rocks they found the concrete enclosure was crushed and the pipe was squashed flat. It is fixed now and next time, far in the future I hope, we...

Wow! Twenty people filled out applications for 12 positions on the Wahkiakum County fair board! I think our county commissioners had some tough decisions to make selecting board members. The selected board members will use their skills and knowledge to help plan many new projects at the fairgrounds. I am looking forward to working with the fair board members at our fund raising events in 2012 and discussing new ideas for activities at our fairgrounds. The Wahkiakum County Fair Board members are Bill Chamberlain, Jim Moten, Joe Blalock, Phil...

The Washington State Department of Agriculture grant papers for our new bleachers have been signed by all the appropriate people and Mr. Chuck Beyer told me I can order the bleachers! After an email to the company representative I think I may wait a few months before I place that order. The order will take only four weeks to be completed and this time of year it is still too wet to get the area prepared where these bleachers will be set up. Once in place, they will be there permanently because they weigh a lot even though they are aluminum. My...

It’s cold and snowing, yet wintertime projects at the fairgrounds continue to be planned and completed. One of our continuing projects has been to try to make all of our buildings wheelchair accessible. Last summer we built a goat, sheep and pig barn complete with animal pens, built out of the materials we had available. We built the barn on a concrete slab that was designed for a former building. The concrete slab had some dirt areas where we needed to have an aisle, these dirt areas made maneuvering through the barn difficult. T...

This week I will fill out the paperwork to apply for state funding for the Wahkiakum County Fair. Let’s all send positive thoughts towards Olympia as Washington State budgets are getting close to being finalized. County fair funding may or may not be included in the state budget. Letters asking for fair funding support have been sent to Senator Brian Hatfield, and Representatives Brian Blake and Dean Takko. I have done my best to make each of them understand that the Wahkiakum County Fair is very important to our community. I hope you will a...

The Wahkiakum County Fair is supported and maintained each year by Fair Board fund raising events, State Fair funding, the Wahkiakum County commissioners, camping fees from our park, private Fairgrounds event rentals, rummage sales, Horse Game Shows, Fair time vendor fees, raffles, gate admissions and very appreciated donations. The Wahkiakum County Fair received some very generous donations from local people and businesses this week. Thank you to Cathlamet Realty West, Jason Delamater, and The Campbell Group, LLC. Your donations will be put...

Merry Christmas to the Wahkiakum County Fair! This is what I was thinking after opening a letter from the State of Washington, Department of Agriculture. Last October I applied for a grant from the Department of Agriculture to replace two of our old wooden bleachers. The new bleachers that I asked funding for are aluminum, seat 91 people each, they have an aisle in the middle with a hand rail for easy access to the seats and are enclosed on the back and sides with a chain link guardrail. Knowing we would be facing a limited 2012 budget, I...

The lights at the fairgrounds are beautiful, the free holiday dinner was delicious and the people attending were wonderful to visit with. Last weekend's Skamokawa Grange and Fire Department dinner was a sparkling success, hope you attended! Fund raising plans for 2012 are already starting to take shape. On February 11 we will serve our “Valentine Diamond Dinner” at the Skamokawa Grange Hall. We are still in the process of lining up the entertainment for this special evening. If you have attended our dinner, you know we will find some great ent...

It was a fun 4-H Jamboree Event that Deb Gribskov and Shawn Deal organized last Saturday at the Wahkiakum High School. The Jamboree was attended by 4-H’ers of all ages and they made decorated cookies, delicious fudge, berry jams and created a multitude of crafts items. The kids completed all the projects by themselves with a little guidance and a tiny bit of help from the 4-H leaders and parent volunteers that attended. Even the littlest kids mashed berries, added pectin and sugar to make berry jam. These little ones worked with their p...
