  • What's Happening at the Fair?

Becky Ledtke, Wah. County Fair Manager|May 26, 2011

Last week the plans for the entertainment stage, that the Fair Board would like to have built, were given to Chuck Beyer who manages the Building and Planning for Wahkiakum County. He will redraw the plans so a contractor can look at his blueprints and build the stage at the Fairgrounds. Soon we will have a new entertainment stage! We have been using cedar shavings in many landscaping projects on the Fairgrounds. The shavings smell good and are a red cedar color that looks really nice in our flower beds. We also like to use the shavings in the...

Early Saturday morning a group of seven volunteers arrived at the Fairgrounds to complete a painting project. They spent the day painting the inside of the horse barn stalls red and leveling the ground inside of the stalls. At noon the volunteers took a break and were served a gourmet lunch by Lois Wakefield. Lois brought enough food to feed all the volunteers working on the horse barn and everyone else volunteering on the various projects on the Fairgrounds that day. The barn is looking great thanks to Horse Barn Superintendent Valerie Antijun...

I have heard that rainy weather doesn’t stop people from traveling to rummage sales; I know that this is a true fact now. Even though it was raining so hard it was knocking blossoms off flowers, at 10 a.m. cars started pulling up! They came to shop, visit and look over the projects going on at the Fairgrounds. We had neighbors, friends and travelers stop by and everyone left with sacks of treasures. Many were amazed at the variety of items that have been donated to support our Fair. Special thanks to Jerry Ledtke and Ursula Petralia for v...

The Wahkiakum County Fair Board's Easter Bingo was a successful fund raising event! By 6:30 p.m. the multi-purpose room at the grade school was filled with people ready to play bingo. The first number was called, the room turned quiet and all attention was focused on watching bingo cards. Each bingo game winner would take home a big delicious ham or two fresh frozen chickens! After 10 rounds of bingo, it was time for some raffle tickets to be drawn. The generous donations from our community were piled high on a table, raffle ticket numbers call...

The Fairgrounds were the site of the Wahkiakum County Fair Board's Used Book and Rummage Sale last weekend! We had lots of people stop by and purchase books and other good, useable items that were for sale. It was nice to visit with everyone that stopped by, seemed like a mini-fair get together. We plan on having used book sales and rummage sales at least once a month. Our community has donated items we still need to pick up for our next sale in May and we will also be receiving 20 boxes of good books to sell at this sale. Watch this column...

I have a message for the many people who have inquired about the Silver Buckle Series Game Show. We are planning the Game Series! I will have the three event dates in my Fair column next week. This year we plan to run these events at each game show: Poles, Figure 8, Key Poles, Speed Barrels, International Flags and Texas Barrels. We may add another game event or two to the above list. I am studying three new patterns that I think would be fun for the gaming crowd. If you have a horse gate key and would like to volunteer to run the patterns in...

Saturday we had a group of 10 volunteers painting the horse barn stalls and poster wall. Horse Barn Superintendent Valerie Antijunti bought blue paint for the poster wall that matches the color of the metal on the outside of the barn. The inside of the stalls were painted red, the color made them look very clean and bright. At noon the volunteers took a break from painting and were served a picnic lunch with hamburgers barbecued by Lois Wakefield. The volunteers worked until they ran out of stalls that were ready to paint, a combined total of...
