Sunday's Concert: It's a lovely Monday with fog lifting and sunshine coming through. A good day to smile and remember the wonderful concert yesterday at the packed Naselle Community Center with the Skamokawa Swamp Opera group. I was so happy to hear the Sheriff's Report song first thing and then the Sheriff's Report Volume Two at the end. Folks came from Raymond to the west and Puget Island to the east. The group sang for an hour with songs of Finland and the region, giving the audience a wonder...

  • Naselle blacksmiths' work leads them in strange directions

    Diana Zimmerman, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 10, 2014

"The blacksmith used to be the king of crafts," Naselle resident David Curl said. "If you needed a tool you went to a smith." Solstice Forge sits on a hill just east of Naselle. It's a sunny peaceful spot with a garden that grows larger each year and a dog named Patches that just can't get any bigger. If you step into the shade of the shop, your ears will begin to adjust to the older melodies playing on the radio, and your eyes will light on the tools of a trade that went out of fashion with the...

  • Good time had by all at the fair

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 23, 2012

CLOUDY START--As this work week begins, it's pretty doggone cloudy out here in West Valley this morning, but it's not all that cold, so it's just right for this non-sun lover! It's pleasant enough to be outside in, but not hot and the wind's not blowing, so it's not nippy, so one of my personally preferred, perfect days! According to the weather folk, it seems the cloudy morning, sunny afternoon routine will continue throughout the week and they say there is no rain in the forecast, although it is certainly very dark out there this Tuesday...

  • Head to Johnson Park Saturday for a picnic

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 19, 2012

How did you enjoy the thunder and lightning show last Friday night? It was great until we were awakened by our dogs barking and growling and raising a loud commotion. When we got up, we found an extra dog in the living room on our couch and he wasn’t about to leave with all the noise outside. It turned out to be our neighbor’s, Al and Nancy George's dog Butch, the brother of our older male dog. He doesn’t like these noisy nights, so went looking for a place to hide. All ended well, after we had to wake up Al and Nancy to come take him home...

  • Antique sale at Redmen Hall

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jun 21, 2012

GREAT ENDING--Last Friday was nothing but sunshine and warm temperatures. It was so nice, it was almost a shock to the system. With sunshine for a few days, it was time to get that outside work done as they said it wasn't going to last too long. I hope you beat the rain showers late Saturday, and made sure dad got to rest on Father's Day, although it was making any outdoor BBQ plans a little dismal. Hopefully all you dads had a great day anyway! While it is warm outside, remember your four-legged friend is wearing a heavy winter coat, so...

  • Horsemanship Challenge Saturday

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jun 14, 2012

BRIEFLY WARMER--As this week began, we'd warmed up a bit from the wet and windy spell we had at the end of last week, so that's been nice. But by Tuesday morning, all was soaking wet again. This is pretty typical Spring weather with it springing a leak quite often! Let's hope for some drier days more events are happening which would really benefit from some dry weather conditions. COMING RIGHT UP--One of those events that would benefit from drier weather would be the second softball game between the Guns and Hoses teams this weekend at the high...

  • Local smith keeps ancient trade alive

    Stevan Morgain|Aug 27, 2009

Fire, brimstone, heat and smoke: Large hammers, iron men, and a perhaps a few women, are what make mere mortals into blacksmiths. That’s the impression one gets visiting Solstice Forge and talking with owner David Curl of Naselle. Curl stands next to his small 110-year old forge in a shop that might once have been a two-car garage. “Blacksmithing is about history," he said, “and there are no trade secrets.” His leather gloved hand turns a small crank that simultaneously spins a bellows fan that injects air into a bed of hot coals. “It's a...
