Domestic violence has no place in our community

October 11, 2012

To The Eagle:

This month welcomed October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. One in four women will be the victim of domestic violence at some point in her lifetime, and on average, three women are killed every day at the hands of a current or former intimate partner.

The economic downturn has had a devastating effect on programs working to serve survivors of abuse. While a bad economy does not cause domestic violence, it can make it worse. At the same time, there are fewer options for survivors to escape. According to the 2012 Mary Kay Truth About Abuse Survey, nearly eight out of 10 domestic violence shelters nationwide reported an increase in women seeking help, while the vast majority experienced decreases in funding.

Despite tremendous challenges, domestic violence shelters served nearly 70,000 victims in one day alone, according to the latest National Network to End Domestic Violence, Domestic Violence Counts. The Charlotte House, a program of St. James Family Center, is just one of these shelters. If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, we can help. Please call us at 360-795-6400 or toll free at 1-866-795-9381. All our services are free and confidential.

Throughout October, communities across the country will mourn for those whose lives were taken by domestic violence, celebrate the tremendous progress victim advocates have made over the years, and connect with one another with a true sense of unity to end domestic violence. In Wahkiakum County you will notice purple ribbons lining Main Street in Cathlamet and table tents in local restaurants. Our county commissioners acknowledged Domestic Violence Awareness Month by reading the proclamation at Tuesday’s meeting. If you attend the Mules' October 12 home football game, you will see the cheerleaders showing support for this cause. The football players and coaches are also participating. If you are in the stands, you might just win a purple surprise.

On October 26 The Charlotte House Advisory Board will host the 14th Annual Chocolate Extravaganza at The Hotel Cathlamet from 4:30 -7 p.m. Please join us for a fun and delicious experience and to show that you also believe that domestic violence has no place in our community.
