November 29, 2018

The Naselle-Grays River Valley School District Board of Directors met for its monthly meeting on November 20 in the Middle School Commons.

In personnel matters, the board approved a partial leave of absence for Greg Nelson, assistant girls’ basketball coach. The board subsequently hired Kathryn Green to fill the partial leave for the basketball coach. The board acknowledged the resignation of Heather Varila, assistant cook, and hired Angela Metcalf to fill the vacant position. The board also approved the hire of April Zimmerman as a para-educator. Nicole Burkhalter resigned her position as middle school volleyball coach. In a final personnel matter, the board approved a reduction in force for classified staff.

In other matters of business, the board approved a resolution for a potential Maintenance and Operations Levy rollback. This action was precipitated by new legislation, capping the maximum levy rate at $1.50 per $1,000 of assessed valuation. In a final action item, the board approved a five year Facilities’ Master Plan.

A general discussion was held regarding the state of the music and vocational wing, noting that the building was in need of repairs. Superintendent Nelson reviewed some general costs and timelines for having a bond measure on the ballot. She also noted that the district had applied for a grant to update the facility, but that she had not heard back yet on the status of the grant.

Before the conclusion of the meeting, the board conducted an evaulation of the superintendent in executive session.

The next school board meeting will be on December 18 at the Grays River Fire Hall beginning at 6:30 p.m.
