VFW post recognizes businesses for poppies

Wahkiakum VFW Post 5297 has recognized local businesses for support of the buddy poppy program.

Twelve businesses volunteered to have Buddy Poppies and donation containers placed in their business. Wahkiakum VFW Post 5297 has two Buddy Poppy drives each year, one in November, during the Veterans Day holiday, and the other in May, during the Memorial Day holiday. In addition, Post 5297 has a manned booth at the Cathlamet Market. Manpower only allows one booth per drive, but the post is always looking for ways to increase the use of manned booths to two or three.

The Buddy Poppy distribution program gives out the red Buddy Poppies and the local community makes donations to the VFW. The Post must buy the Buddy Poppies from the National VFW Organization. These funds provide compensation to the disabled and needy veterans in VA hospitals who assemble the poppies, provides financial assistance in maintaining state and national veterans' rehabilitation and service programs and partially supports the VFW National Home for Children. Locally, the Buddy Poppy donations raise funds for its charitable programs on behalf of veterans, their families, and the surviving family members of deceased veterans.

On June 9, l2 local businesses were recognized with Certificates of Appreciation. Post Commander Bill Tawater, post member and former District 16 Commander, Bob Roche, and post member and Judge Advocate Dan Richards presented the certificates at each business.

The recipients of the Certificates of Appreciation were Annie Waters from the Dollar General, Heather Nakonsky from the Cathlamet Pharmacy, Javier Sanchez from the River Mile 38 Brewery, Jim Wilson from the Cathlamet Building Supply, Joel Moore from Moore's Auto, Layna Hickman from the Cathlamet Mini Mart, Maria Zapien from Maria's Place, Michael Kirby from the Cathlamet Market, Patty Vezaldenos from Patty Cakes & Roasting, Sandy Miller from First Interstate Bank, Seth Kuljis from the Pizza Mill, and Thomas Ang from Angie's Cathlamet Chevron.
