August 11, 2022



Wahkiakum County law enforcement officers and emergency response personnel handled a variety of reports during the past week, including:

August 1 — 2:25 a.m. A caller reported a disabled vehicle with hazard lights on in the westbound lane of SR 4 on Abe Creek Hill. A deputy responded and said the vehicle appeared to be out of gas. State patrol was en route. 11:48 a.m. A caller complained of smoke along a chain link fence between the trailer park and cement plant in the Rosedale area. 3:27 p.m. A caller was concerned about the condition of a neglected goat he had taken water to on a Puget Island property. 3:27 p.m. A caller requested assistance after locking her keys in her car while it was running. 3:56 p.m. A caller in Grays River said that a neighbor came to her home to report that one of her dog’s had killed one of his chickens. She said that the neighbor had shot their dogs in the past for the same reason. The neighbor called and said he would send a letter to the owner of the dog. 6:41 p.m. Deputies responded when a caller reported that a boat had capsized in the Columbia River in the Skamokawa area and a person was in the water. The person was rescued at 7:18 p.m. and aid was requested for hypothermic exposure. Skamokawa emergency personnel responded. A deputy advised that the vessel was obstructing the shipping channel. 9:11 p.m. A caller reported a suspicious and possibly intoxicated man walking up and down SR 409 holding a bottle. A deputy responded and said the man did not appear to be intoxicated, but gave him a warning for walking with his back to traffic. 9:44 p.m. A person was taken into custody after a woman, concerned about her safety, reported a domestic disturbance.


August 2 — 8:51 a.m. The Cathlamet ambulance and a deputy aided a Cathlamet resident who was having difficulty breathing and had pain in her arm. 1:48 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided a man who was choking at the Cathlamet Market. The man refused transport to the hospital. 3:34 p.m. The Grays River ambulance aided a Grays River resident who had abdominal pain and possibly low potassium. 7:15 p.m. A caller reported that someone in a green and black spray painted car was going through mail boxes on Beaver Creek Road. 7:38 p.m. A welfare check was requested for a Cathlamet resident who had not been heard from in several days. A deputy responded and the coroner was called. 9:34 p.m. A caller reported that someone could be heard yelling on a logging road near Kents Bridge in the Elochoman Valley. The caller believed the person’s vehicle may have broken down. A deputy responded and said that the person was assisted off a small eddy and had been advised not to drive.

August 3 — 1:27 a.m. A domestic disturbance was reported at a Grays River home. The resident said her son was drunk and would not leave. She later said that he had struck her multiple times. A deputy was en route when the resident called back to say that her son was outside and that she and her husband had locked the door. He had stopped knocking on the door, but she wasn’t sure if he was gone. She called back 20 minutes later to say she didn’t know where he was, but he was not there. 11:05 a.m. A caller reported that she had gone to an Elochoman Valley home to check on a person and found him deceased. 5:14 p.m. A Puget Island resident reported that someone was messing with the property line. A deputy responded and found no evidence of changes to the property line. 6:44 p.m. A Deep River resident reported that a young male was riding a dirt bike at high speeds and had done a wheelie in front of her house.


August 4 — 2:06 a.m. A power outage was reported at a home in the Skamokawa area. The PUD was notified. 7:06 p.m. A caller said that a man in a white truck pulled an unconscious male out of a blue Prius on SR 4 in the Deep River area and left in the truck. A deputy responded but was unable to locate the parties or the vehicles. 9:29 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided a person at County Line Park who was having respiratory issues.


August 5 — 3:31 a.m. A fire alarm was activated at St. James Family Center. District 4 Fire Department responded and a responsible party was contacted. The alarm company would be contacted the following day regarding the faulty alarm. 7:04 a.m. A caller reported a bicycle had sat along Elochoman Valley Road near Kents Bridge over night. 8:59 a.m. An Elochoman Valley resident said that she and her husband were visited by a company that tried to sell them expensive smoke alarms after they entered a raffle at the Cowlitz County Fair. After they provided the people with personal information, she learned that it was a scam. 11 a.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided a Cathlamet resident who had covid-19 and hit her head after passing out. 12:39 p.m. An Elochoman Valley resident complained of low water pressure. A town employee was notified. 6:58 p.m. A driver was arrested for driving under the influence following a vehicle stop at Nassa Point. 7 p.m. A caller reported a suspicious vehicle parked near his Elochoman Valley home. He thought the driver might be intoxicated. A deputy responded and said the motorist was driving the speed limit and staying in the lane. 7:24 p.m. A caller accidentally dialed 911. 10:26 p.m. A loud explosion was reported in Cathlamet. The caller said it shook the ground.


August 6 — 8:22 a.m. A caller said a truck was in a ditch along Beaver Creek Road with the flashers on. The vehicle was unoccupied. 11:52 a.m. A dog was found near Miller Point Road. 12:05 p.m. A caller reported that two men had drowned in the Columbia River at Vista Park. A deputy and Skamokawa emergency personnel responded. 2:03 p.m. The Grays River ambulance aided a Grays River resident who was complaining of dizziness, numbness on the left side of her face, and issues with her GI tract. 2:22 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided a person with a laceration to her foot at the marina. 6:18 p.m. A caller complained about a dog that was loose and running all over the neighborhood. 7:29 p.m. A caller was concerned about a dog that had been left in a car in Skamokawa. 7:53 p.m. A caller reported a possible brush fire on East Valley Road. Someone from the Skamokawa Fire Department responded and reported that there was no brush fire. 10:09 p.m. A caller reported a possible drunk driver parked at a Rosedale business. At 10:13 p.m. the driver was stopped and cited for driving with a suspended license and for not having any insurance.

August 7 — 12:33 a.m. A caller reported hearing six gun shots, possibly a rifle, west of Cape Horn. 12:37 a.m. Multiple callers reported a brush fire along SR 4 in the Cape Horn area. The Cathlamet Fire Department, the District 4 Fire Department, the Skamokawa Fire Department, the Puget Island Fire Department, the Cathlamet ambulance, and Cowlitz Fire responded. The Department of Natural Resources was notified at 12:55 a.m. At 1:10 a.m., two firecrackers were found. State patrol was on scene at 1:13 a.m. The Wahkiakum PUD responded and turned off power to the area at 1:24 a.m. A reverse 911 call was made to 59 residents in the area at 2:19 a.m. The road was closed between milepost 40 and 43 and the Washington State Department of Transportation took over traffic control at 2:34 a.m. All Wahkiakum fire units cleared the scene at 3:59 a.m. and it was turned over to DNR.1:26 a.m. A caller reported lots of activity in the front parking lot of the Wahkiakum County courthouse. 3:55 a.m. Power was restored to east county residents by the PUD. It had been shut off because of the fire. 7:29 a.m. An Elochoman Valley resident said that his neighbor had yelled at him after he asked people to move cars they had parked in a shared driveway. 8:25 a.m. A caller said a large boat had capsized against a jetty near Puget Island. 10:04 a.m. The Cathlamet ambulance provided a lift assist to a Cathlamet resident. She refused transport to the hospital. 8:27 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided a Cathlamet resident after a medical pendant was activated.
