Sheriff's Report, May 25, 2023

Wahkiakum County law enforcement officers and emergency response personnel handled a variety of reports during the past week, including:

May 15 — 12:49 a.m. A caller said a pickup went into a ditch along SR 4 in the Grays River area. A deputy, state patrol, the Grays River Fire Department, and the Grays River ambulance responded. A tow truck was called and en route. 2:42 a.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided an individual at a Cathlamet address who was having difficulty breathing and feared he might pass out. 10:45 a.m. A caller reported verbal abuse at a Skamokawa home. 4:09 p.m. A caller was concerned about an overturned kayak stuck in a jetty near her home on East Sunny Sands Road. The U.S. Coast Guard was notified. 7:03 p.m. A driver said she struck a dog when it ran out in front of her car on SR 4 in the Rosburg area. She said the dog, a brown and white hound breed, was deceased but there was no damage to her vehicle. 7:07 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided a person in a home east of Rosedale who may have suffered a stroke. 8:16 p.m. A caller reported a suspicious person parked in the turnout for the quarry in Skamokawa. The caller said the truck had been there for some time. 9:42 p.m. Two people were injured in a motor vehicle accident on SR 4 in Grays River. A deputy, the Grays River Fire Department, and the Grays River ambulance responded.

May 16 — 4:39 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance transported a clinic patient who suffered a stroke to the hospital. 5 p.m. A welfare check was requested for a Puget Island resident. A deputy responded. The individual refused aid. 6:48 p.m. A caller said that a quad and a dirt bike were racing on Greenwood Road. A deputy responded and spoke to the father. He said that everyone was being safe. 9:22 p.m. A caller said he was stuck on Bradley Trails and needed assistance. A deputy responded. 10:02 p.m. A Rosburg resident reported that a neighbor was playing his music too loud.

May 17 — 12:50 a.m. The Cathlamet ambulance and a deputy responded when a Beaver Creek resident said he was dizzy and complained of chest and back pain. They found the person walking along Beaver Creek Road. 5:24 a.m. A caller said that part of a rotten tree fell on East Little Island Road. He said he was able to clear enough of it to pass through. 8:11 a.m. A caller reported suspicious activity involving two men, two suspicious pick up trucks and a moving truck parked in the bushes along SR 4 in the Grays River area. 8:45 a.m. An alarm was activated at a Puget Island home. It was a false alarm. 11:45 a.m. An East Valley resident said that a neighbor was spraying along the fence, and when his roommate went to speak to the neighbor, the neighbor attempted to spray him. The caller said it was a violation of a restraining order. 1:08 p.m. A caller reported a motorcyclist heading toward Puget Island at a high rate of speed. 1:21 p.m. A Marina Estates resident said that a neighbor was on their property screaming profanities at his family. The neighbor was last seen walking toward the marina with a dog. A deputy responded but was unable to locate the subject. A deputy later spoke with both parties. The neighbor was reminded that she was not to come on to the other party’s property. The caller was given options should the neighbor’s behavior escalate. 2:03 p.m. The Grays River ambulance aided a Deep River resident complaining of chest pain. 3:37 p.m. A caller reported that a person appeared to have passed out in a vehicle partially parked in the right of way in a parking lot along SR 4 in the Cathlamet area. A deputy responded and learned that the driver was resting. He asked the driver to pull into a parking spot. 5:35 p.m. A caller found a damaged and possibly vandalized door knob at a Deep River home. 8:30 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance responded when a person fell in downtown. The person was seen getting up and getting into a vehicle driven by a possible drunk driver who hit a curb when he made a U-turn leaving the scene. One witness saw both people exit a bar. A deputy responded and conducted a field sobriety test. A licensed driver arrived and picked up the person and the car. 10:30 p.m. A caller said that a military helicopter landed on Puget Island and took off again after dropping some people off.

May 18 — 7:37 a.m. An alarm was activated at a Puget Island home. The alarm company canceled the alarm. 11 a.m. A caller asked for advice about how to get rid of a vehicle abandoned on county property. 2:40 p.m. A caller said someone was taking advantage of a friend and stealing from him. A deputy responded. 6:10 p.m. A caller reported hearing shots fired in Cathlamet. 6:12 p.m. A Cathlamet resident reported hearing shots fired. 7:34 p.m. The Grays River ambulance aided a Grays River resident who had fallen and was bleeding.

May 19 — 6:12 a.m. A Deep River resident fell. A deputy and the Grays River ambulance responded. 10:47 a.m. A caller reported that a man had been drinking all morning and was now heading east on Columbia Street in a vehicle. He turned onto Jacobson Road and was later found at a Rosedale business and arrested. 11:17 a.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided an individual who was having an unknown problem related to diabetes. The person refused transport to the hospital. 11:19 a.m. A caller hung up after dialing 911. Dispatch tried to call back but no one answered and the phone disconnected because voice mail was not set up. 11:27 p.m. A caller requested a deputy to check a couple vehicles left behind by former renters at a Deep River home. 7:25 p.m. A caller reported a domestic disturbance at a Grays River home and said that alcohol was involved and children were on scene. She said the husband would not let his wife leave, and that the woman had gotten a cut on her hand while trying to do so. The woman, possibly intoxicated, eventually drove off with the children in a black sedan. Deputies responded and Cowlitz County was advised to be on the lookout for the vehicle. 7:52 p.m. A welfare check was requested for a Puget Island youth who was not answering her phone. 8:08 p.m. A caller reported an erratic driver in a white Honda truck with a canopy. 8:23 p.m. A caller reported that a small dog was seen on Nelson Creek Road.

May 20 — 9:28 a.m. A caller said she was feeling really emotional and asked to speak to someone from the mental health department. She was put in contact with a crisis responder. 12:35 p.m. A caller reported a suspicious person at a Deep River residence. 3:16 p.m. Dispatch received a 911 text regarding a possible motor vehicle accident with injuries in the Elochoman Valley. Responders were en route, but the owner of the phone said there was no accident. A deputy reported that it was a false notification. 3:47 p.m. A resident living the Monroe Estates reported that a neighbor sits in a chair on his property gets up and yells at her when she drives by. 7:44 p.m. A caller reported that kids were on motorcycles in the area of Greenwood Road.

May 21 — 12:56 p.m. A caller reported an erratic driver heading west on SR 4 near the bottom of Abe Creek Hill. 5:30 p.m. An East Valley resident reported a recurring concern regarding a neighbor’s dog. The dog was out running around, the caller said, despite a warning that it would be cited as a dangerous dog if it happened again. A deputy responded.
