Wahkiakum County law enforcement officers and emergency response personnel handled a variety of reports during the last week, including:
February 24 9:38 a.m. Eden Valley Road was closed due to high water. 10:54 p.m. A caller requested a welfare check on their elderly relative on Puget Island whom they had not been in contact with for more than four weeks. Deputies made contact with the elderly resident who did not appear to be in any distress. 11:19 a.m. A caller on W SR 4 near Wold Rd. in Skamokawa reported an eight-inch hole they believed highway workers left because they were concerned it could create a sinkhole. Traffic Management arrived on the scene and was taking care of it. 7:52 p.m. A driver on E SR4 near the County Park Line called to report a large boulder blocking the westbound lane. 8:19 p.m. The Grays River Fire Department responded to reports of a power outage on Waranka Rd. in Rosburg. PUD was advised of the outage. 10:09 p.m. A caller on W SR4 near Mullen Rd in Skamokawa reported a fallen tree across the road. 11:00 p.m. The Grays River Fire Department responded to power outages at residences on Fossil Creek Rd., N Hull Creek Rd., Waranka Rd., and W SR 4. The PUD was notified and power was restored shortly after. 11:32 p.m. Cathlamet Emergency Services assisted an elderly Cathlamet resident who had fallen.
February 25 12:07 a.m. - 9:39 p.m. The Grays River Fire Department, Cathlamet Fire Department, Wahkiakum County Sheriff’s Office, and District 4 responded to reports of power outages due to weather conditions across Wahkiakum County; the PUD restored power in all instances. 4:47 a.m. A Cathlamet resident called to report they saw a transformer blow on E SR4 near downtown and the power pole was bent over the highway with lines hanging in the road. 7:58 a.m. A Grays River resident called to report a tree down across the roadway; County Roads reported the road had been cleared by loggers. 8:07 a.m. A concerned Cathlamet resident called to report vehicles going at a high rate of speed on Columbia Street. 9:02 a.m. Sheriff’s deputies reported the closure of the east end of Covered Bridge Rd. due to high water. 9:54 a.m. The Cathlamet Ambulance responded to help an elderly Cathlamet resident who had fallen. 10:29 a.m. A Cathlamet resident called to report that they had rescued a stray dog. 10:45 a.m. County Roads assisted a Cathlamet resident who reported that a downed tree was blocking their driveway and they couldn’t get out. 10:50 a.m. The west end of Loop Road from SR4 to 190 Loop Rd. was closed due to high water. 11:31 p.m. Sheriff’s deputies responded to a triggered burglary alarm at a Cathlamet business but found nothing out of place after checking the building and perimeter.
February 26 7:15 a.m. Cathlamet Emergency Services assisted an elderly Puget Island resident who had fallen. 2:48 p.m. A driver on W SR4 called to report a person walking in the middle of the highway near Waterford. 7:04 p.m. An elderly Cathlamet resident called to request the Cathlamet Ambulance because of back pain. 7:42 p.m. Sheriff’s deputies assisted a driver in Cathlamet who locked their keys out of their car. 8:03 p.m. Cathlamet Ambulance responded to help an elderly Cathlamet resident who had suddenly become ill. 9:08 p.m. A Skamokawa resident called to report a vehicle parked with their lights on in an odd area at Fern Hill Cemetery.
February 27 12:05 p.m. A Cathlamet resident called for assistance after locking themselves out of their home; the resident was advised to call a locksmith. 1:42 p.m. Sheriff’s deputies assisted a driver in Cathlamet after they locked themselves out of their vehicle.
February 28 12:54 p.m. Cathlamet Emergency Services responded to help an elderly Cathlamet resident who was having chest pains. 2:30 p.m. A caller on SR 4 reported a driver traveling at a high rate of speed and driving erratically between lanes going westbound near Cathlamet. 4:42 p.m. A concerned citizen found an injured seagull and was put in contact with Peninsula Wildcare. 5:54 p.m. A driver on Puget Island called to request assistance after locking their keys in their vehicle with their dog inside. 7:04 p.m. Sheriff’s deputies responded to the report of an abandoned vehicle that was left running at the Ferry Landing on Puget Island. Deputies contacted the owner who retrieved the vehicle shortly after.
March 1 6:31 a.m. A driver in Cathlamet drove away with their phone on top of their vehicle on Hill Drive in Cathlamet and cannot locate it; it is a Galaxy S20 with a sparkly case. 1:47 p.m. The Cathlamet Ambulance responded to help an elderly Cathlamet resident who had a possible femur fracture. 6:26 p.m. A Cathlamet resident reported a loose puppy running around near Jacobson Rd. and Anderson.
March 2 11:46 a.m. A Grays River resident called for assistance after locking their keys in their vehicle with multiple dogs in the car. 4:22 p.m. A concerned Skamokawa resident called to report an unknown vehicle with two people suspected to be looking for owl pellets. 6:36 p.m. A caller on SR4 reported a deceased deer blocking the eastbound lane in the Cape Horn area. 10:15 p.m. A Puget Island resident called to report that their neighbor’s four dogs had been barking for the past half hour.
