Clatskanie volleyball returns seven to court

As tryouts begin Aug. 18, the Clatskanie Middle/High School girls volleyball team is preparing itself for a successful season from all levels. "We just wrapped up hosting a youth camp for fourth through eighth graders," said Head Varsity Coach Amanda Baker. "It was a huge success. We had 30 girls, which felt pretty big for our little community. [There was] lots of enthusiasm and energy in the gym all week. [We're] hoping it sets the tone moving into the season and that we gain some future Tiger volleyball stars."

According to Baker, the team has "lots of returning starters and varsity players," including Joey Sizemore and Mya Jensen as outside hitters, Lacey Willis as middle blocker, Addy Compton as starting setter, McKinsey Doyle as libero, and Olivia George and Peyton Krueger as pin hitters. Baker sees the experience shared among these returning starters as one of the team's strengths. "All these girls have made two trips to the state tournament," said Baker. "They know what it takes to get there and what it takes to be successful once there. Defense, particularly tip defense, will be a huge focus for us this year."

Having moved to the Northwest League in recent seasons, Clatskanie has developed a bit of a rivalry with Portland Christian, according to Baker. "Portland Christian should be our toughest league matchup again this year," she said. "They also have a lot of starters returning this year so should make for another exciting matchup this year."

Having the same coaching staff as last year, Baker brings back Norma Davis as her assistant coach specializing in defense. "This will be our 6th season running the high school program together," said Baker. JV Head Coach Hallie Blodgett, working with Baker for a third consecutive year, will be assisted by Lita Blodgett, who's returning for a second season.

A full schedule of volleyball and other Clatskanie fall sports will be available in a future edition of The Eagle.
