Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891

In response to J.B. To The Eagle

To The Eagle,

Just thinking about Mr. JB Bouchard's letter Oct. 16, 2025, regarding protecting the migrating geese. His words were so descriptive they captured me. The quiet weekends will be shattered by early morning blasts of shotguns aimed at magnificent innocent migrating geese stopping here on Puget Island to recover from their exhausting migration flight. Many will be shot to death, and geese mate for life, causing disruption of the population of goslings to keep the skein and gaggle strong. I feel and think it's a great idea to declare Puget Island a no shooting/hunting zone. Make Puget Island a wildlife refuge for the migrating Snow, Canada and Cackling geese; the coastal dwelling Brant, with Ross geese, protecting them under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act WDFW like Willapa Bay NWR.

Having read letters from lifelong residents asking transplants to not come here and try and change their way of life, they live off the land and water. Well, maybe a balance. What about wildlife conservation to keep the species abundant?

Before we had moved here, I had a trusted mechanic [that] I took my daughter's and my cars in to in Keyport, Wash., for years. He talked about this bird sanctuary place in SW Washington he and his wife would go to every year to watch all bird wildlife here. They would stay in a quaint place. It was wonderful. It finally dawned on me, after being here a couple of years, that he was talking about this area, so great idea, Mr. Bouchard.

Lauralee Relethford,

Skamokawa
