NOT NICE!--I'm pretty sure that our snow/sleet/wind event last weekend lasted much longer than a whole lot of people wanted it to, as while that first batch of snow is pretty, after that, it can just wind up being a real nuisance. Besides, when you add the freezing rain/sleet and the strong winds to it, then it's really not pleasant and as many people could attest to, it made for some very hazardous driving! Many folks in the Westend lost power for a long time, as they got a lot of ice and I was told that more than 100 trees came down! The one...
ALL PREPARED?--If weather apps are to be believed, by the time you read this, you may be playing in some "white stuff" as snow was to begin falling on Wednesday, and continue for several days with nighttime temperatures in the teens. We all know that I have to write this early in the week, and we all know that a forecast can fall apart from one hour to the next, but just in case this one happens to be true, I certainly hope you've gotten stocked up and made all the preparations necessary for yourselves, as well as your outdoor animals, just in...
SOGGY--As this week begins, it's definitely a cloudy, drippy and dreary day, which might be the forecast for most of the week, while the weekend is looking a little nicer, but then, we all know how these forecasts can change on a dime. One can hope the drier but chillier forecast materializes, as I think some sunshine about now would do us all some good. However, considering that the Midwest and the East coast were getting hammered with a huge amount of snow and wind that has even shut down part of New York City, I won't complain too much...
MIXED--At the end of last week, we woke up to thick frost and temperatures in the low 20s in West Valley, so that certainly meant another log on the fire for those who use wood heat! Sunday it was back to cool but damp conditions with a moment or two of thick stuff hitting our windshield here, but, just about a mile up the road on KM Mountain, there was some accumlation starting to build, so the snow was not very far away and I heard there were several inches of snow on Beaver Creek. On this Monday morning, we currently have snow falling in...
NICE START--As this week begins, it's actually a pretty decent day after a somewhat cloudy and dampish beginning but the sun popped out this Sunday and gave us a very nice break. Last week, I turned in my column prior to all wind and rain that crashed down upon us and boy, it was really something! From mudslides to high water closing multiple roadways, it was quite the sight. Once again, we got a chance to see how prepared we were as some couldn't leave their houses until the waters receded and others found themselves "trapped" in places they d...
NICE, THEN SOGGY--It was certainly nice to enjoy some sunshine this last Friday and Saturday, as it was a much needed break that gave the high waters time to recede and gave all the outdoor lovers a time to stroll or bike in some dry conditions, awesome! I think we often take nice days for granted, so when they show up after a week of steady rains and nothing but dark gloomy skies, those bright, clear skies and sunshine are really appreciated that much more! The coming week looks a bit wet, with even some blustery winds and minor flooding, but...
IT'S A NEW YEAR--It's my first column of 2021, wow, we made it! We may be into a new year, but we still have the same ole weather, wet and wild! We even ended the first Saturday in January with a heck of a rain event, which also came along with some strong winds, of course that depended on where you live, as some areas got hit harder than others. I think the first tree casuality happened on the west end, as a tree came down across Altoona Road in the early evening hours, so that set the tone for the rest of the evening. By the time I headed to...
OFF AND ON--As I begin this column, we're having some of that mixed weather where it sunshines one minute and rains the next and sometimes it does both at the same time! It looks like we are still in for some showers this week but it is mixed with some dry days at the beginning of this week, so we'll take what dry weather we can get. Of course clear skies usually mean freezing at night, so here's hoping you've prepared your faucets properly for that, and your outside critters are getting some extra feed of good quality to help them fight off...
WET AND WINDY--As this weekend before Christmas winds down, we are having some very wet and windy conditions, so in other words, normal weather just before the Christmas holiday. It seems when we all want to do that last minute shopping, the weather is more like "stay at home" weather, which with Covid going around, is so fitting. However, there appears to be a few days of drier weather before the rain returns, which could mean some freezing, so let's hope folks don't get caught off guard by the dryness and forget about the possibility of some...
COLD AND SOGGY--We ended last weekend with a very frozen Saturday morning in West Valley, and I have to say, I was a little surprised to have to really work at getting my frozen mailbox opened that morning! Now of course, we're into a stretch of very wet weather and I know people who are already tired of the rain and chilly temps, so for them, I'm afraid it's going to be a very long winter, as it hasn't even officially begun! The "chilled to the bone" phrase keeps coming up, and I couldn't agree more! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays...
LOOKING SOGGY--After a few days of some clear, sunny days, albeit cold, it looks like we're in for a drizzly one this week. If the forecast comes true you may have to resign yourself to use that umbrella more often and keep the boots by the door! Of course, with all our little micro-climates around here, one area could be wet while the other dry, so personally, I'd like to go against the odds and hope for a bit more dryness out here in West Valley for a change. Then again, it's December. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Dec....
COOL BUT DRY--We started out the first of this week with a nippy 32 degrees but at least it was dry. That's not the case with how the work week is starting however, as it's a bit soggy. We are supposed to have a fairly dry week though, so that will be nice, but remember, when it's dry around here this time of year, it's usually pretty chilly during our night time hours, so your critters might need some cozy, warm place to sleep and outside animals usually need a bit more feed to fend of the chill. Here's hoping our start to December is a dry...
PRETTY WET--The beginning of last week was pretty doggone wet and we were happy to have a bit of dryness show up on Thursday so our "lakes" could recede from our fields before the next batch of rain comes falling down! With the King Tides, we saw a lot of water in the lowlands and places like Swedetown were seeing some pretty watery lawns and driveways. There were also some very impressive pictures being shared by folks regarding the massive waves on the coast which appeared to swallow up a lighthouse and another of the Coast Guard's...
NASTY OUT--As this work week begins, we've got lots of rain to add to what we had over the weekend and those puddles have turned into "lakes" and with king tides this past weekend, the streams are full and fields have gotten even fuller and I think the only ones really happy about it are the ducks! As I write this, I got a message that said we were to have a chance of high winds tomorrow (Tuesday), so I hope they skipped us, but if not, I hope you were ready for them and that we all got to keep our power on. We've had multiple problems with tre...
BRRR--As the skies cleared this past weekend, the temperatures took a nose-dive and we wound up freezing here in West Valley, so I hope you had your hoses drained and your faucets covered and all your plants insulated from the cold as well. Of course, the middle of November will soon be here and I guess you know, we have had some pretty horrendous weather events around here during this time of year, so for all you new folks, please get yourself prepared for what could happen as around these parts, it's better to play it safe now, rather than...
NICE WEEKEND--We ended October last Saturday and it was very nice and sunny during the daytime, albeit a bit nippy in the evenings, but that's okay, as at least it wasn't wet and nasty out, which made it much better for all those trick or treaters that were out and about on Saturday! To top it off, we got to start our new month of November on Sunday, with an extra hour of sleep as well, so hey, that's always something to be happy about! I don't know about where you live, but we started this new month with freezing temperatures at our house...
BRRR--As this last week of October started, we woke up to a very cold, frosty white but clear morning on Sunday and it was just 27 degrees. I am thankful we had power because it would have been even colder in a hurry! I heard that some folks in Cathlamet and Puget Island wound up without any power for a bit that morning, so those folks who had alternative heat/power sources, were certainly glad they had that option. Considering this is the second outage in a short amount of time, I hope it's not a sign of things to come as Winter has yet to...
SOGGY BEGINNING--As this week begins, it is definitely a dripping, dreary, sunless day! It's one of those days when the dampness seems to sink into your bones and it's time to add that extra layer of clothes or crank up the heat as the whole house seems chilly. From the sounds of it, we may have more dampness before you get this paper, and then, if we get lucky, we get a couple of decent days scattered in there in the next week, so we sure hope so! However, it's possible that temperatures take a real cold turn at the latter part of this week,...
NOT SO NICE--This past Saturday night was really a wild one out here in West Valley, with thunder and lightning and windy conditions hitting us late that night and into early Sunday morning.Crazy times and loud too! Some neighboring fields turned into lakes once again, so at least the ducks seemed happy with the overnight changes. Then along came Sunday night. That was wild as well, but this time, multiple trees came down and we had power outages everywhere it seemed! Ours was out for over seven hours, but it depended on where you were as to...
CHANGE IS COMING--This past weekend wasn't too bad although Saturday was pretty cloudy with a bit of light mist in the evening hours in West Valley but Sunday was pretty decent and we even managed to see the sunshine. However, forecasters are saying that the rain is coming in this Saturday and will last for a few days, so I hope you were able to enjoy most of the dry weather we had. However, we all know how things can change around here in a hurry, so if it's a nice day, put your worries on the back burner and enjoy these wonderful Fall days...
NICE ONE--This week started out with blue sky and sunshine and according to forecasters, it is supposed to be nice all week long. That means September will end with sunshine and October will begin with sunshine and very warm temperatures, so that's a real surprise; a nice one though! With some folks planning special events this weekend, it will certainly be appreciated. However, those 80 degree temperatures (if they happen) certainly don't seem like football weather. I am just hoping that the wildfire smoke doesn't make a return like some...
BEEN A BIT WILD--Last Thursday evening we were treated to a thunder and lightning storm by Mother Nature and it was pretty darn impressive as it lit up the night sky and rattled our windows! I know some folks lost power out Pillar Rock way, but thankfully the PUD got right on it and it was repaired in no time, so that was good. Then we had some rain; the cleansing kind, which brought our air quality numbers way down to just 12, which was certainly a huge difference from that 328 we had a few days earlier! It's so nice to be able to open the...
NOT NICE--As this week began, the smoke and fog combo that hit Sunday morning was really something to see, as that's just about all that you could see at my house! It was defintely not a good time to be outside and warnings were given to stay inside until our air quality improves. I hope the rain that was to arrive this week shows up and gives us some relief, as these very smokey conditions are truly terrible. Just think: some countries have this kind of poor air quality on a regular basis and often times live in masks. That certainly gives us...
TOASTY--We got a heavy dose of Summer weather just as we go into the school year and what we always think of as Fall sports, but as we can see, these high temperatures mean more swim suits, flip flops and beach time, and not coats, umbrellas and boots! Of course, things can change here on a dime, so who knows how long this heat wave will continue, but I'm hoping you're enjoying it while it's here. For me, I will continue to hide in the basement where it's cool! Wildfires are raging in several states and some are experiencing black outs and of...
NICE--We had a nice weekend but while we had the sunny days, those evenings got pretty chilly so we know the seasons will soon be changing. While we had just a bit of a downturn on Monday morning, which brought a smattering of showers, it didn't last long and was decent the rest of the day. It also looks to be warming up for the rest of the week with some pretty high temperatures, so it looks like Summer isn't over just yet. I do hope you'll enjoy it while it's here as we all know what can happen here in the blink of an eye: Winter! Fingers...
