Maybe, maybe we will see some sunshine this week. Lake Fred (my pasture) is down and the ducks are gone. We can once again drive out our driveway without worrying about water getting into the vehicle. Oh, the joys of winter in Grays River. News from Naselle: Let’s all remember to mark our calendar for the annual Valentine Smorgasbord to be held on February 13 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Naselle-Grays River School. This event is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, and is a one of a kind lunch. You can’t go wrong by attending thi...
Flooded in again! It wasn’t too bad until Sunday and we couldn’t get any of the vehicles out. The ducks are in heaven though. Our dogs have discovered that if they wade into the water under the trees, they can pick the mice out of the lower branches and have a snack. Of course sometimes you have to share with the other dogs. News from Naselle: The Naselle Drama Club will host a Musical Variety Show on Friday at 7 p.m. Donations will be accepted at the door to help defray some of the Drama Club costs. Enjoy a fun filled evening of family ent...

On Tuesday, the Mules faltered in the second half and lost 59-40...
Wahkiakum County officials are searching for a way to lower taxes. New Assessor Bill Coons and the Wahkiakum County Board of Equalization agree that 2010 assessments on Puget Island were higher than they should have been. Coons said Tuesday that he and the board had done independent studies of sale values and reached the same conclusions. "The issue is, what is a fair value for property on Puget Island," Coons said. "We both reached the conclusion that the assessed values are too high." Both, however, are searching for a way to address the...
Wahkiakum County commissioners handled a variety of business ranging from office hours to a biosolids ordinance when they met Tuesday. The board delayed action on a request from Assessor Bill Coons to modify the hours of his office and work schedule of his appraiser. Coons proposed having the appraiser condense his normal five work days into four longer days to cut down on his commuting time. Coons also said he himself would like to work 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and would keep the office open one hour past the traditional 4 p.m. closing time in the...
Facing possible law suits over application of ordinances, the Cathlamet town council on Monday rescinded a motion it passed in December regarding sewer service fees for the park model cabins at the Elochoman Slough Marina. Council members voted to amend the ordinance which sets the fees to include new forms of transient housing such as motels, bed and breakfasts, and the park models. The existing ordinance contains no definition of motels or park models, and council members in December felt they had to assess fees as if the cabins were for...
Another weird week of weather. It looks like all the gloom and doom forecasts have just about missed us so far. It makes me wonder how much these folks get paid, with all the high tech equipment, and still can’t get it even close to right. Maybe they should have a window put in their offices, and look outside before they give a forecast. Be advised, though, the bad weather warnings need to be heeded, just in case. Living in the country makes it difficult to run out and get what you need at a moments notice. Make sure you keep supplies on h...
The visiting Napavine Tigers handed the Wahkiakum Lady Mule basketball team a 43-31 loss on Tuesday. The Tigers went on a 13-point spurt in the third quarter to take control of the game. Leading 24-17 at halftime, they outscored the Mules 18-5 in the quarter to lead 42-22 after three quarters. The Mules turned the table in the fourth quarter, holding the Tigers to one point while scoring nine. Blaine Land led the Mules with 10 points. Caitlin Nicolazzi added seven, Shelby Felton six, Brianne Helms four and Brieanna Olsen two. Land grabbed 13...
The Cathlamet Town Council wrapped up its budget preparation for 2011 with a special meeting last week. Three major issues remained to be settled, Mayor George Wehrfritz said at the start of the meeting--library staffing, a contribution, if any, to the successor of the Lower Columbia Economic Development Council, and the budgets for the fire department and emergency services. Council members left their regular monthly meeting December 20 unsettled on how to set funding for library programs. They were considering reducing the salary of...
In a 2-1 vote, Wahkiakum County commissioners agreed Tuesday to contract with the merged Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce and Lower Columbia Economic Development Council (EDC). The two organizations are merging this year as state funding for EDCs is drying up. Commissioners Lisa Marsyla and Dan Cothren voted to make a $25,000 appropriation; Commissioner Blair Brady voted against it. The funds come from the state and are specifically set to be used by a county's economic development organization, selected by the county commission. Brady suggested t...
Cold, cold, cold! I hope everyone was prepared for it. The sunshine was a Godsend during the days, though, and allowed us to get most of the roofing done on our house. Once it is complete we can concentrate on inside work. News from Naselle: School’s back in session after the winter holiday break. Sports calendar for Naselle games coming up this week include: Thursday-girls basketball at Willapa Valley at 5:45 p.m.; Friday-boys basketball at North Beach at 5:45 p.m.; Saturday-girls basketball at home with North Beach at 5:45 p.m.; Wednesday-mid...
Here we are, the final countdown to the end of 2010, and a new year dawning with hope for good health and good fortune coming with it. It has been an eventful year for many of us, but we have all made it through. I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and that it was full of family, friends, good food and lots of fun. We headed south to Stockton, Calif. and apparently got the blame for bringing more rain to them. We had a wonderful time, spent lots of time with grandkids, kids and even some friends. The grandchildren made ornaments for next...
Wahkiakum County commissioners handled a variety of business Tuesday ranging from dealing with a department head's mistake to considering a new junior taxing district. Commissioners Blair Brady, Lisa Marsyla and Dan Cothren met with Prosecuting Attorney Dan Bigelow to discuss how to deal with a department head's mistake in giving employees time off. Public Works Director Pete Ringen informed the commission that he had misunderstood the board's decision on what holiday time employees would have before Christmas and gave employees in his departme...
As the merger of the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce and Lower Columbia Economic Development Council (EDC) approaches, one question that becomes clear is, "Who's in; who's out?" Leaders of the two organizations began considering a merger this fall. The EDC is losing much of the funding it receives through state economic development service contracts, and the groups thought their similar missions of promoting business, economic development and community activities could be combined into a streamlined organization able to operate in the new world o...
I was very leery two months ago when I learned the Lower Columbia Economic Development Council and Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce were going to discuss a merger. I worried about whether or not the two groups' missions are compatible enough to form an organization that will be able to handle a variety of economic development projects while still doing the community activities and promotions that the Chamber conducts. Instead, I should have been worried about whether or not local government would continue to support county wide economic developmen...
The Wahkiakum Lady Mule basketball team stumbled against two Central League opponents in action this past week. On December 16, the visiting Adna Pirates threw a defensive blanket over the Mules and won 67-28. The Pirates took a 26-7 first quarter lead. The Mules played evenly in the 10-10 second quarter but faded in the second half. Brianne Helms scored six points, grabbed four rebounds, and made four assists and four steals. Blaine Land added six points; Brieanna Olsen and Caitlin Nicolazzi each scored five, and Haylee Budd, Maya Stanley and...
Port District No. 2 should soon inherit the office it has used for decades and which belongs to the Skamokawa Park and Recreation District. The only remaining Park and Recreation Commissioner, James (Sunrise) Fletcher on Tuesday told Port 2 commissioners he had set up a meeting next Wednesday, 7 p.m., in the park office to dissolve the park and recreation district and transfer its assets to the port district. The district was formed at the same time the port district formed, he said, specifically to host and operate the Skamokawa Library, as...
Officials of Port District No. 1 would like a break in their bills from the Town of Cathlamet for sewer and water service. On Monday, Port Attorney Tim Hanigan asked the town council to reconsider how it defines multi-user residences, and he also told the town officials that a port business tenant, not the port, was responsible for the tenants' sewer and water bill. Town officials discussed the requests, voted to approve one appeal, and decided to look into matters further before acting on other requests. Also on Monday, Jarnail Mann asked for...
Town of Cathlamet officials had hoped to wrap up work on their 2011 budgets when they met Monday for their monthly council meeting, but when the meeting adjourned at 12:07 a.m. Tuesday, they had scheduled a special meeting December 30, 6 p.m., to complete the work. When Mayor George Wehrfritz asked council members if they were ready for the final vote on the budget, Council Member David Goodroe replied that he still had a list of unanswered questions. That opened a two-hour discussion that left officials trying to juggle changes and settle...
Wahkiakum County commissioners worked on 2011 tax levies and handled other business at their meeting Tuesday. Commissioners needed to certify the 2011 levies that day, officials said. Commissioners said they intended to approve the levies with no increase. The actual collections will increase with the addition of new construction and improvement to property, and from increases in value of state-assessed property. Proposed collections were: --Current Expense Fund, $457,722; --Emergency Medical Services, $114,381, and --County Road Fund,...
Hot and cold--that was the play of the Wahkiakum Lady Mules in their 50-39 win over the visiting Winlock Cardinals Tuesday in a Central League basketball game. The lead switched back and forth in the first quarter, with Winlock leading 14-12 after eight minutes. The Mules, who had a deeper bench, went on a 10-point run in the second quarter to lead 29-19 at halftime. It was Winlock's turn in the third quarter; the Cardinals came out hot and outscored the cold-shooting Mules 10-2 in the quarter to close the Mule advantage to 31-29 after three qu...
The Naselle Comettes pulled out the defensive blanket in the third quarter to win a 43-29 victory over the Wahkiakum Lady Mules in the second Annual Girls KM Trophy Game last Thursday. Comette Nichole Tarabochia led the scoring with 15 points. Also for the Comettes, Carley Kitzman scored eight, Taylor Wasmundt six, Haleigh See and Makenzie Matthews...
"It's not going to get better soon," was the message state Representatives Brian Blake and Dean Takko shared with local community leaders Tuesday morning. The pair appeared at the quarterly community forum for elected officials, which is sponsored by the Cowlitz/Wahkiakum Council of Governments (COG). They and other legislators gathered Saturday in Olympia at the request of Governor Chris Gregoire to address a $1.7 billion shortfall in the current biennium budget. "We cut about half," Rep. Takko said. "We'll take care of the rest of it in...
Wahkiakum Mental Health and the Cowlitz Family Health Center (FHC) may soon team up to provide mental health services in the Family Health Clinic in Cathlamet. FHC Executive Director Dian Cooper told the Wahkiakum County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday that the move would a result of the Obama Administrations Health Care Reform Bill. The legislation will provide funding for cooperative efforts to provide services in clinics to support primary care providers and enhance care for patients. Over 50 percent of clinic patients who are referred to...
