Members of the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce and the Lower Columbia Economic Development Council are continuing to iron out details on their merger. The boards of directors of each organization have agreed to merge effective January 1. They hope to save money by ending duplicative services, and they hope their combined funding will allow them to maintain a level of staffing. The economic development council is facing a loss of state economic development funding. The EDC and Chamber share sales tax funds collected for promoting business and...
Sunday certainly brought an interesting storm to our area. The Grays River was over its banks and in the fields within a few minutes that afternoon. We drove to Rosburg at about 3 p.m. and in the time it took us to get back home the water was about four inches deep over our driveway coming in. Of course, Lake Fred (our pasture during fair weather and duck pond during storms), was already up by then and the creek was more than full. Such an exciting place to live, but you know, I wouldn’t trade it for anywhere else. On Monday, our last two w...

Wahkiakum County's two judges have proposed a major expansion of the Courthouse Annex to improve the security of the courts. Superior Court Judge Michael Sullivan and District Court Judge William Faubion met with the board of commissioners to discuss the proposal and other security issues on Monday. "There's no money," was the basic response of Commissioners Blair Brady, Dan Cothren and Lisa Marsyla. If the economy picks up, the judges should bring the proposal back to the board, said Commissioner Marsyla. In the meantime, Cothren said, the...
The good news from Wahkiakum Health and Human Services is that, so far this fall, the flu season is light. The bad news is that the county is seeing a surge of chlamydia cases among people ages 18-24. County Human Services Director Judy Bright and Public Health Officer Dr. Jennifer Vines reported on these and other issue to the county board of health, which is also the county board of commissioners, on Tuesday. "There is so little flu activity this year that I can't give you regional data," Dr. Vines said. There have been cases reported, but...
Wahkiakum County commissioners planned Tuesday to finish their 2011 budget preparations when they conclude an adjourned meeting this morning (Thursday) at 8:45 a.m. Commissioners had no public input on their budgets when they held a public hearing on Monday. They discussed some requests and changes on Tuesday and adjourned their meeting to Thursday to go over the final figures. The commission scheduled a public hearing for December 28 to make last-minute changes to their 2010 budget to handle a potential influx of revenue from state managed...
What are signs that a youth might be thinking of committing suicide? What can a person do about it? These and related questions and topics were discussed Monday when a group of Cowlitz County residents, including a class from Lower Columbia College's nursing program, met with Mary Jadwisiak, Youth Suicide Prevention Program (YSPP) field coordinator for Clark and Cowlitz counties. Jadwisiak led the group through a 45-minute training on signs of suicide among youth and how to respond, and she listed the free resources available through the Youth...
April 10, 1979. "That's a date I can remember," Wahkiakum County Sheriff Dan Bardsley said this week. "That's when I was hired on full-time as a deputy sheriff." At the end of this month, after nearly 31 years as a law enforcement officer, Bardsley's career will come to an end. He didn't run for re-election, and his last term of office is expiring. Bardsley realized early in life that he wanted to be a law enforcement officer. "I got into some trouble when I was a kid, hanging around with some older kids, and we took some things," he recalls. Wahkiakum County commissioners will convene at 9:30 a.m. Monday to open their public hearing on the proposed 2011 county budgets. Under state law, the county starts the budget hearing on the first Monday of December and must conclude it within five days. Facing a continuing revenue shortfall, county officials have made few changes in their budgets. The Current Expense Fund, which includes most courthouse services, is set for $4.23 million in 2011, up slightly from $4.09 million in 2010. Commissioners have diverted $200,000 from the County Road...
I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. It was wonderful to get away for a few days, see family, eat too much and get some wonderful news as well. We kind of slip-slided our way to Redmond, Ore. for the holiday as the roads were pretty icy, but made it all in one piece. Our oldest granddaughter, Marlee, became engaged on Friday, and shared the news with us after her boyfriend, Scotty, proposed to her while they were hiking on Smith Rock, just outside of Redmond. They haven’t set a date yet but plan to be married in the summer. It looks l...

A group of Wahkiakum County residents gathered last week to take initial steps to form a county marine resources council. The councils are part of a program sponsored by Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) to encourage community based stewardship of the coastline and its estuaries. Councils conduct citizen-driven marine science studies and protect and restore marine habitat. They are set to receive funding of $40,000 every two years. About a year ago, Wahkiakum County commissioners agreed to form a council in the county and...
The Wahkiakum School District board of directors discussed issues related to implementing a student drug testing policy when the board met last Thursday. District administrators have suggested that the district have a program for testing students suspected of using illegal drugs or alcohol. "Kids tell us that there is quite a bit of drug use at school," said Superintendent Bob Garrett. "Perhaps a policy would deter that. Having urinalysis would send a strong message." In the 1990's, the district tried to implement a program for testing...
My goodness, it’s nearly December, and another year almost gone. Christmas is almost here. This was an unusual beginning for our week. Snow, snow and even a little more snow. An early deadline for the week also throws off the norm. It is really an interesting camp out trying to keep the water pipes from freezing in our motor home. We are actually getting some things done on the home building front though. The framing is nearly done and the roof is covered both upstairs and down with plywood and plastic which means the interior is mostly dry, s...
Commissioners of Port District 2 and the Skamokawa Sewer and Water District (SWD) are trying to negotiate new fees for each other. The port leases land in Skamokawa Vista Park for a drainfield for the SWD. The park's restrooms are connected to their own drainfield. The SWD bills the Skamokawa Park and Recreation District (PRD) for the sewer connection to the port office, which the port is buying from the PRD. The SWD is behind on its account with the port district, SWD commissioners Val Ross and Oliver VandenBerghe said November 16. In turn,...

She graduated from high school and studied to be a nurse. After six years as a nurse, she decided to advance her skills and became a nurse practitioner. She has worked two years in that role. She said she enjoys...
As Wahkiakum County officials prepare for the final phase of their budget preparation for 2011, they realize all could change next spring. The state legislature will have to deal with another significant revenue shortfall, and that could significantly change the county's revenue outlook. "We're up in the air till we see what the legislature does," said Commissioner Blair Brady, who spent the past week at the meeting of the Washington Association of Counties and had budget discussions with state officials. "We're in a holding pattern until we...
Supporters of the Cathlamet Fire Department jammed the River Street Meeting Room Monday to tell Mayor George Wehrfritz to back off from efforts to change financial oversight of department accounts. Wehrfritz and department officers began butting heads in September with the release of the town's proposed 2011 budget. In it, Wehrfritz proposed cost-cutting measures such as having department trucks and ambulance use Wahkiakum County's fuel dock instead of commercial gas stations and also having the First Aid Division pay a share of administrative...
As community meetings went, Monday's town council meeting wasn't too bad. Sure it lasted almost three hours. The hot part, though, was the first two hours in which citizens generally criticized Mayor George Wehrfritz for his handling of proposed changes in management of accounts of the Cathlamet Fire Department and its First Aid Division. For the most part, discussion was fairly civil; only once did the crowd shout someone down. "You're smearing our reputations," the crowd told the mayor. He should have handled the issues more diplomatically, t...
We woke up this morning to four gunshots, not a real surprise as we had hunters on the property. It turned out to be a really successful hunt for Alan Gregory and Mark Zimmerman. They each got their bull elk. Alan’s was a four point plus two eye guard points and Mark’s was a three point plus two eye guards. Congratulations to you both. News from Naselle: PACNET (Pacific County Narcotics Enforcement Task Force) was at school on November 4 for an educational assembly at which time Simon, the PACNET drug dog was introduced. Four deputies, inc...
The South Bend Indian football team took advantage of six Wahkiakum Mule turnovers to claim a 35-7 victory in the opening round of Class 2B state football playoffs last Saturday. The hosts kicked off to the Mules and stopped the visitors' drive. South Bend then drove the length of the field in nine plays and went ahead 6-0 . The Mules fumbled the ball away on their next drive, and South Bend put another score on the board early in the second quarter. They added another for a 20-0 halftime lead. South Bend went up 27-0 in the third quarter. The...
Officers of the Cathlamet Fire Department are becoming locked in a battle with Mayor George Wehrfritz over who will control the department. In mid-October, Wehrfritz told department officers he wanted the department's record keeping done by town hall staff, and he and department personnel met to go over the process. They also planned to merge the department's Emergency Medical Services Revolving and Cumulative reserve funds, one of which has been operated on a private account by Assistant Chief Bill Faubion, fire department treasurer, since...
Five and a quarter inches of rain in the bucket, five inches of water over the driveway, ducks, sea gulls and geese in the lake that is usually a pasture; I think winter is coming. The weatherman says a few days of sun are in store. Maybe we can get some more work done on the house. News from Naselle: Another win for the Naselle Comets with a score of 47-14 against Ocosta. Congratulations Team! Sports coming up this week include: Friday, the 5th- football crossover with Central League; Saturday, the 6th- cross country state meet at Pasco. What...
