  • Port 1 OKs abandoned boat sale, considers fish cleaning station quotes

    Diana Zimmerman|Feb 16, 2023

Last Thursday, Wahkiakum County Port 1 Commissioners authorized the sale of an abandoned vessel at their meeting, learned about upgrades at the marina as they prepare for a busy fishing season, and authorized the manager to make a decision regarding bids for a fish cleaning station. The Windigo, a Homebuilt Buchan 37 foot sailboat, currently moored in the Elochoman Slough Marina, is up for sale. Port Manager Todd Souvenir explained that the vessel was considered abandoned after the owner failed...

  • Commissioners consider shoreline program administrator

    Rick Nelson|Feb 16, 2023

Wahkiakum County commissioners considered who would administer the county's Shoreline Master Program and acted on other business when they met Tuesday. Commissioners also approved a contract with an engineering firm to redesign the intersection of East Valley Road and SR 4 in Skamokawa; they received a report of county Extension Office activities, and they voiced opposition to state proposals to set aside trust timberlands for carbon sequestration. The shoreline program regulates development and activities along shorelines. The county currently...

  • Rosburg man learns how to handle a computer scam

    Diana Zimmerman|Feb 16, 2023

One day last week, Rosburg resident Poul Toftemark’s computer screen went black and a message appeared, alerting him to a problem and directing him to call Microsoft. A phone number was provided. Toftemark panicked and went with the only option presented to him in the moment. He started dialing. “Never call that number,” Toftemark advised. Unfortunately, he’s learned a hard lesson over the past few days, but thanks to his willingness to talk about what happened and the good folks at Compute...

  • Don't fall victim to cyber crime

    Feb 16, 2023

To The Eagle: Cyber crime, is for the most part, tricking someone, or someone’s computer, into doing what the criminal wants it to do, without you knowing. I was a victim of that last week, and would like to let the community know, that they are here as well, or rather their intrusions are here. “They” could be anywhere in the world, connected in, to me, unknown ways of cyber space. Do not do, as I did, call the number provided in the following account, of what happened. Working on the computer, all of a sudden, the screen is black, with a prom...

  • Black history should be studied in school

    Feb 16, 2023

To The Eagle: Sports’ greats Jack Robinson, Hank Aaron, Jim Thorpe, and Roberto Clemente, as well as Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, civil rights heroine Rosa Parks, and Nelson Mandela, Africa’s former president and apartheid’s legendary nemesis, all share two commonalities: First: they are ‘people of color’ whose published biographies reflect upon their lifelong struggles against, and personal triumphs over, the racial prejudice and bigotry they had to overcome as they fought to live successful, ultimately famous, lives. The second co...

  • Social Security facts are facts

    Feb 16, 2023

To The Eagle: SS Cards until 1980s stated SS number was “not to be used for Identification.” FDR planned federal Social Security and promised participation would be 100% voluntary. Today SS (FICA) withholding is no longer voluntary. FDR said SS participants would only pay 1% on first $1400 of income. Today you must pay 7.65% (FICA) on first $90,000 of income. FDR said money put into SS account is 100% ‘income tax’ deductible. Today SS is no longer tax deductible. FDR said SS money would be put into an “independent trust fund” and not be used...

  • How can everyone be wrong?

    Feb 16, 2023

To The Eagle: A couple of things to rant and rave about. First: the state of the union speech was lauded as the absolute, bar none, best speech EVER by the NPR crowd. A friend, aged as myself, sent me a link to Glenn Beck which I listened to. He stated point by point how it was absolutely the worst speech EVER. Hmm. How can anybody be right if everybody is wrong? I dearly wish my pen crossing friend Howard Brawn was here to contribute his wit and wisdom. Second thing: Not sure if you were able to see the halftime show on Super Bowl Sunday, but...

  • What I miss most about Howard Brawn

    Feb 16, 2023

To The Eagle: I was reading a letter to the editor where the writer said that another writer the week before had expressed missing Howard Brawn’s letters. So do I. In fact I miss the person of Howard. And, I myself, sometimes strongly disagreed with a stance he took. So, for the people who miss “crossing swords” or just having intense discussions about all manner of things, I want to tell you what I miss most about Howard Brawn. In intense differences of opinion in articles, he was never the one with his knickers in a twist. It didn’t make him...

  • Police dogs to be trained to find fentanyl

    Alexandria Osborne, Washington State Journal|Feb 16, 2023
    1

The war against the use of illegal fentanyl will get some extra help in the future from drug sniffing dogs trained to detect the substance. That’s the intent of House Bill 1635, introduced by Rep. Gina Mosbrucker, R-Lakewood. The bill instructs the Criminal Justice Training Commission to develop model standards for training the police dogs. Fentanyl is used illegally for intense but short-term highs and temporary feelings of euphoria, but can cause fainting, seizures and sometimes even death. Mosbrucker said the fentanyl epidemic is second only...

  • Crab feed is on Puget Island on Saturday

    Kay Chamberlain|Feb 16, 2023

NOT SO NICE--As this week begins, it looks pretty nasty out there and if the forecasters are correct, we will get some snow as the temperatures fall. Fortunately, this is supposed to be a very brief snow event so I hope that’s correct. The rest of the week appears to be colder but drier according to most forecasters, so we’ll just have to wait and see how that plays out. I am a little bummed that the minute my “Snowdrops” bloom, it seems like we get snow and they get buried, but hopefully they will survive okay. If we do get some super cold we...

  • Downriver Dispatches

    Karen Bertroch|Feb 16, 2023

Commentary: I am a Texan at heart. It doesn't make me love this area less; it makes me appreciate it more. My favorite spot there is the Bussey family ranch in Weatherford, west of Ft. Worth. They are my foster family and I remember well when they bought that ranch which now has given joy to four generations so far. My husband's family was from Colorado, a place I learned to love in 1963 when I worked on a remote dude ranch out of Durango, Colorado. When I was first married, we lived in Gypsum,...

  • Stalking, online or in person, would be the same

    Alexandria Osborne, Washington State Journal|Feb 16, 2023

Stalking is stalking, whether it is in person or online, and they will be treated as identical crimes if a bill presented in the Legislature is adopted. Under current law, a person commits the crime of stalking if they repeatedly follow someone with the intent to intimidate and harass. “Unfortunately, scholarly literature indicates that law enforcement has a tendency to downplay the behavior because the individual acts of stalking are not typically criminal on their own and do not appear threatening to someone who doesn't understand the c...
