    The WSU Extension held its 4th annual Agricultural Summit this Saturday, where "organic" was the key word of the day. Twenty seven local farmers and residents turned out to hear speakers including Tim Crosby, of 21 Acres Farm in Redmond. Crosby spoke on the amount of energy used in food production.     Governor Christine Gregoire has proclaimed the week of May 14 through 20 as Washington State University Master Gardener Volunteer Week. This proclamation was signed by the Governor on April 23 to celebrate the program's 34 years of service. This model of volunteer service has been emulated in all 50 states and numerous other countries. There are over 3,500 WSU Master Gardener volunteers who serve more than 330,000 Washington residents each year.   • WCF to build park at Covered Bridge site

    The Wahkiakum Community Foundation's Board of Trustees this week announced that they will receive State funding to support the purchase of five acres at the Grays River Covered Bridge. The acreage will become the "Ahlberg Park," named for the pioneer family who homesteaded the area. Located at the southwest corner of the bridge, the acreage is well known as a destination site for visitors and residents alike.   • Town refurbishing water reservoir

    Cathlamet water system customers should use water carefully, Mayor Dick Swart recommended this past weekend. The town has drained the Greenwood Hill reservoir so that it may be refurbished and painted. The project was planned for this year, but good weather and other conditions brought the contractor to work sooner than expected, Swart said.     When hikers or hunters turn up missing, or swimmers or fishermen are lost, we have an organization here in Cathlamet that deals with these problems. It's call The Wahkiakum County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue (WCSO SAR). This is a dedicated group of civilian volunteers attached to the county Sheriff's office.     A new website makes it easier to apply for the annual Rod & Reels Rod Run and the Dollars for Scholars Sturgeon Derby in Cathlamet. The Annual Sturgeon Derby, BBQ and Rod Run Car Show are scheduled for June 2 at the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds in Skamokawa. The event raises money for local scholarships.   • Roads will be ready for Great White Tail Run

    The 23rd annual Great White Tail Run will be held May 19 on the Julia Butler Hansen National Wildlife Refuge between Cathlamet and Skamokawa on SR 4. The course is an our and back run on Steamboat Slough Road which will be closed to traffic from 9:45 to 11:45 a.m. on the morning of the run. This is a family event with a two mile walk/run, and five kilometer and 10 kilometer events.     A new map of regional sites has been installed on the Ferry Wahkiakum, replacing one that had deteriorated. The map is to scale, with a blown-up area for the details of Puget Island. Created and crafted by Cathlamet artist Mike Swift, the colored map features sites such as Redmen Hall, the Covered Bridge and the Pioneer Church, and the eight Lewis and Clark sites in Wahkiakum County.     The Wahkiakum Mule fastpitch softball team closed their 2007 season with a 4-1 win over the Knappa Loggers last Friday. "The season ended on a great note," said Coach Cindy Fudge.     The Wahkiakum Mules lost their opening game of district baseball play but won their nightcap to stay alive on Tuesday. They'll play Saturday, 12 noon, in Adna. The Mules lost their opener 13-10 to the Adna Pirates. Ty Briscoe smashed a three-run home run and a two-run double to lead the Mule attack.     Seven teams participated in the 25th Annual Cathlamet Invite including Morton, Mossyrock, Wishkah Valley, Willapa Valley, and Mary M Knight.     A Cathlamet woman is joining a group of other women to bring school supplies and health care to Kenya in Africa in July. Julie McKinley, a registered nurse employed by the Hotel Cathlamet Assisted Living Center, will join four other volunteers in the Imani Project, which was started by a Portland woman to distribute school supplies and basic health care to outlying villages.     A mentor orientation is scheduled March 17 at 6 p.m. at the St. James Family Center for adults in the community and Wahkiakum County wanting to know more about the program. Adults will learn more about being matched with young boys and girls in grades kindergarten through five.
