    The Wahkiakum Mule golf team finished with the fourth place medal at the State 1B/2B golf tournament last week in Tacoma. Coach Nick Vavoudis filed this report: The Wahkiakum Mules sent five players to state for the first time in team history and brought home a fourth place trophy, also the best team performance at state in school history. It was a new and nervous experience for everyone except sophomore Brook Calvert, who had made it to state in 2010.     Wahkiakum Mules Blaine Land and Brett Chaput and Naselle Comet Rob Baker returned with medals from the Class2B State Track and Field Meet last Friday and Saturday at Eastern Washington University, Cheney. Land placed second in the discus at 118-3. She also placed fifth in the shot put at 33-4.25. Chaput placed second in the discus at 154-02. Baker placed seventh in the 110m hurdles at 16.36 to earn a medal. He also placed 10th in the high jump at 5-6. Athletes finishing in eighth place or higher earned medals.     Judy Lee (Heagy) Houk died May 25, 2011 in Bend Ore. She was born on May 22, 1940 in Seattle to Errol and Betty (Freeman) Heagy. At two years old, Judy, her father, her new mother Jean and brothers Dennis Lewis and Dennis Errol moved toward the Columbia River region. Her father, Errol working in the ship yards during WWII. With the addition of a new little brother, Steve, the family migrated to Skamokawa where Errol and his brother began a logging business. The family increased by two more brothers, Terry and Ron, and relocated to Cathlamet....

    Carol Jean Albrecht, 76 of Woodland, died May 25, 2011 in Longview after a six year fight against cancer. She was born October 29, 1935 to Francis and Maud (Harris) Tower in Raymond. She married Fred Albrecht there on March 1, 1958. He survives her. She was educated at Centralia Community College and worked as an accounting technician at a Veterans Administration Hospital until she retired in 1995.     In a special meeting Tuesday, the Cathlamet Town Council confirmed the hiring of a new manager for the Julia Butler Hansen Municipal Swimming Pool. She is Cathlamet resident Kayla Pugh. She was head life guard at the pool last year, working for former manager Lynette Ledgerwood. Pugh previously worked as a lifeguard seven years in Clatskanie.     The results of the Healthy Youth Survey administered to Wahkiakum School District students in October of 2010, reflect both strengths and concerns for local students. The results, released in March and reviewed at the Wahkiakum school board meeting in May, confirmed students’ concern about marijuana use in fall of 2010, which resulted in a new optional drug-testing policy to address the problem of substance abuse at school.     In a replay of a situation that occurred in the 1990s, local officials are becoming concerned with erosion along Steamboat Slough Road. The section of road lies on a dike separating the Columbia River and the Julia Butler Hansen National Wildlife Refuge for the Columbian White-tailed Deer.
