  • Fourplex fits the bill for expanded rentals

    Diana Zimmerman|Jan 21, 2021

Rental property wasn't really in Ryan and Melissa Garrett's plans. They had just purchased a home in Wahkiakum County, where they both grew up and went to school and were now raising their kids, with the intention of flipping it. What they didn't see coming was the torrent of response from people who were looking for a home to rent. "We hadn't advertised that we had purchased it," Ryan Garrett said, "but for that many people to contact us in need of a rental, it really got us thinking about how...

  • Town council declines approval for restaurant's outdoor dining permit

    Andrew Weiler|Jan 21, 2021

On Tuesday, the Cathlamet Town Council declined to pass a motion to "approve The Spar restaurant's right-of-way permit subject to agreed upon terms" in a 3 to 1 vote, which gives outdoor dining on Main Street a bleak future. In the same council meeting, the first reading of an amended fire code ordinance was passed which would allow River Mile 38 Brewing Co. to expand its operation at the marina without needing sprinkler systems. Other items discussed include an update on the covid-19 sewer test...

  • Writer recommends conservative newspaper

    Jan 21, 2021
    1

To The Eagle: I emailed to The Longview Daily News to cancel my subscription. They replied back with the cancellation notice signed by a person with its “business card,” a circulation rep from the Mid-Valley Media Group, the Democrat Herald/Gazette-Times/Lebanon Express. No wonder, it’s a democrat newspaper and would only praise themselves but criticize the republicans, conservatives, independents and patriots with propaganda and bias. President Trump promised an orderly transition on Jan. 20. He stated: “Even though I totally disagree with th...

  • Local family lost everything to fire

    Kay Chamberlain|Jan 21, 2021

NICE START--As this week begins, it's actually a pretty decent day after a somewhat cloudy and dampish beginning but the sun popped out this Sunday and gave us a very nice break. Last week, I turned in my column prior to all wind and rain that crashed down upon us and boy, it was really something! From mudslides to high water closing multiple roadways, it was quite the sight. Once again, we got a chance to see how prepared we were as some couldn't leave their houses until the waters receded and others found themselves "trapped" in places they d...

  • Local residents form group to aid animals

    Diana Zimmerman|Jan 21, 2021

Some local citizens who are concerned about abused, neglected, abandoned, and stray animals formed the Wahkiakum Animal Advocates Group (WAAG) in 2019. The pandemic slowed their plans a bit, but they have continued to move forward, getting their 501c3 status, setting up a bank account, talking with local leaders via Zoom, and even performing a trap, neuter, and release operation for a feral cat colony in the Elochoman Valley in recent months. “We’ve made a lot of progress in the last yea...

  • Commissioners nix, for now, more participation in Cathlamet wifi

    Rick Nelson|Jan 21, 2021

Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday by consensus declined to become partners in a project to create a public wifi system through the town of Cathlamet. The Town of Cathlamet, Port District 1, Wahkiakum PUD and other parties have been working on the plan, and last fall, the county commission agreed to participate in funding, allocating the use of $12,406 in CARES Act funds to pay for all the hardware needed to make the project happen. However, the board declined a request to join the town, port district and PUD in a governing board with...

  • Rains flood SR 4, county roads

    Rick Nelson|Jan 14, 2021

Wahkiakum County commissioners dealt with the impacts January's heavy rain when they met Tuesday. The board voted to declare a state of emergency to allow fast track repair of a failing culvert on Salmon Creek Road. Public Works Director Chuck Beyer reported that a culvert, 24-30" in size, was partially gone, taking away one lane of the road. The department is working with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife on emergency permitting to allow the replacement; the new culvert will have to be 6-8' in diameter, Beyer said. The emergency...

  • Corporations say we're insignificant

    Jan 14, 2021

To The Eagle: For years I purchased my prescription drugs from our Cathlamet pharmacy, obviously a local business. When I went to fill a prescription last week, the pharmacist warned me that our Cathlamet pharmacy was no longer considered eligible for the coupon that reduced drug prices and that my prescription was now approximately 10 times more than before. Apparently, our pharmacy does not bring in enough money for “corporate” and is considered “too small and insignificant” for a courtesy that it continues to extend to vendors like WalMart...

  • Politics a barrel of laughs

    Jan 14, 2021

To The Eagle: My, how quickly things change. For the past four years, McConnell, Graham, Cruz and many other politicos have been waxing poetic about Donald Trump. Of a sudden it seems, fueled by what appears to have been a botched coup attempt or at best a rebellious bunch of spoiled children trying for insurrection, the game changed. The gentlemen mentioned above turned around so quickly that if they were tigers, their black stripes would be lying in the dust behind them leaving their true color. American politics are a barrel of laughs for a...

  • A gift we can all use

    Jan 14, 2021

To The Eagle: There is goodness and beauty all around us, yet we grow accustomed to it and sometimes fail to notice or feel gratitude. That is why I wish to extend my thanks to The Wahkiakum County Eagle for setting aside a full page each January to share poetry written by the residents of this community. The annual poetry corner invites all of us to take a break from the discord and unrest in the world and redirect our focus. It gives us an opportunity to find commonality, to see that we are not that different from each other. It lifted my...

  • Restaurants work to serve meals outdoors

    Andrew Weiler|Jan 14, 2021

Local restaurant owners are eager to reopen and are developing outdoor solutions, but the question remains whether outdoor dining will happen in Wahkiakum County. Abiding by state and local guidelines proves difficult both financially and logistically. Under regional reopening the county is at the mercy of its neighbors Cowlitz, Clark, Skamania, and Klickitat. The uncertain future of the county unsurprisingly forces restaurant owners to make difficult business decisions to ensure their...

  • Time to get the hip waders out?

    Kay Chamberlain|Jan 14, 2021

NICE, THEN SOGGY--It was certainly nice to enjoy some sunshine this last Friday and Saturday, as it was a much needed break that gave the high waters time to recede and gave all the outdoor lovers a time to stroll or bike in some dry conditions, awesome! I think we often take nice days for granted, so when they show up after a week of steady rains and nothing but dark gloomy skies, those bright, clear skies and sunshine are really appreciated that much more! The coming week looks a bit wet, with even some blustery winds and minor flooding, but...

  • Downriver Dispatches

    Darrell Alexander|Jan 14, 2021

Rain and Boredom Wahkiakum County is one of the rainiest places in the nation with an annual accumulation of over 94 inches compared with the national average of 38 inches of rain annually. There are on average 126 sunny days per year in Wahkiakum County. With that in mind the question I have been periodically asked by newcomers is what one can do when it is raining all the time. For many of the area farmers nothing really changes except everything including the cows get wet. The local businesses that are open get busy, yet some who are older...
