"Oh life is bigger, bigger than you," REM's Michael Stipe first sang in 1991. That lyric seems to echo in my ears when I don't have an easy explanation for things I don't understand. Like when a wild creature, orphaned, creates family where he finds it. This is about a porcupine named Edgar. On formal occasions he goes by Edgar Alan Poke, the name given to him by the humans he adopted. That's right. He adopted them. A pal first noticed the lonely little porcupine on the property of Megan...
It was almost a typical meeting of the Wahkiakum County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday. The board covered its usual variety of subjects----dredging, staffing, budgeting, bids, reports, and so on, but there was one difference. Commissioner Blair Brady, who has represented the Westend for three terms, acknowledged he had lost the election to retired Sheriff Gene Strong. Because the race had finished Nov. 27 with a two--vote difference in Strong's favor, it went to a recount by hand conducted last Wednesday. Election officials came out with...
Everybody loves a parade, especially if it involves Christmas lights. A stressful election season had Paige Lake, Nicci Bergseng, and Kaelee Dearmore daydreaming about an altogether, much happier season: Christmas. While talking, Dearmore and Bergseng learned that Lake at one time had been involved in organizing the inaugural Lighted Tractor Parade in Centralia. “It was a nice community event,” Lake said. “It brought people into town to celebrate their rural agricultural history.” Why can’t w...
Reader Commentary by Sue Cameron Councilor, Town of Cathlamet I am writing this as an attempt to set the record straight about misconceptions--which seem to have a life of their own--regarding the Town of Cathlamet, especially as noted by Bill Wainwright in the Nov. 29 issue of The Eagle. Regarding John Morgan: John Morgan is a highly respected consultant to Oregon Cities and came recommended by Bill Fashing of the Cowlitz/Wahkiakum Council of Governments (COG). I never worked with him in Tillamook, but I have co-facilitated leadership programs...
To The Eagle: After reading Citizen Wainwright’s letter to the editor of 11/29/2018, I have concerns why our town council is contracting with an Oregon firm for training on how to make decisions, at a cost to us citizen taxpayers of $20,000 when such training is available to all Washington municipalities at no cost or little cost! Free training programs on how to govern and serve as good leaders are offered by the Association of Washington Cities through seminars, classroom, and online eLearning courses. All courses earn credits that can be a...
To The Eagle: There’s an effort afoot to start a local Toastmaster’s club – basically a group that meets weekly to have fun developing speaking skills ranging from technical to humorous, from sublime to ridiculous. The effort is spearheaded by Sue Cameron who has recruited help from a couple of experienced Toastmaster organizers to help us get started. There are about a dozen of us so far, and we need about twice that number to become a viable club. This is an invitation to come check it out and see if it is something you might have fun with....
WARMED UP--The rain may not seem real warm but considering we had temperatures down to 22 degrees last week, these 40 degree temps are definitely warmer! Of course, these gray days make it seem darker even earlier and also make it seem later to boot, unlike those clear, blue skies we were having, which certainly perked up one's spirits, even if they did bring the freezing weather with them! With lots of snow falling in the mountains and horrible snow storms crippling parts of the eastern side of the US and mudslides in part of California, I...

Although I will endeavor to bring to you the public all the events and happenings in the area, however, please note that much of what is eventful is hidden in plain sight. Sometimes we take for granted the beautiful area we live in. Just a reminder to all my new friends in the county to take a deep breath and enjoy the view. Rosburg News: Do not forget that on Wednesdays the Naselle/Rosburg--Grays River Seniors Club will meet at the Rosburg Community Hall at Noon. Thursdays at noon there will be a Senior Citizen Luncheon at the Rosburg...
Wahkiakum County law enforcement officers and emergency response personnel handled a variety of reports during the past week, including: December 3 — 10:37 a.m. An individual allegedly threatened to harm a former co-worker and detonate a pipe bomb in a building belonging to his one-time employer in the Rosedale area. 12:02 p.m. A Skamokawa landlord reported that a former tenant had taken a propane tank without permission. The tenant returned the property after he was confronted. 12:10 p.m. A Puget Island resident complained about two aggressive...

Dolores Nadine Nelson, 87, of Rosburg, died December 6, 2018 at Canterbury Gardens in Longview. She was born December 31, 1930 to Rudolph and Ellen (Keranen) Larson. She was a lifelong Wahkiakum County resident attending Naselle-Grays River Valley schools. She married Roy Nelson on May 8, 1948 and they raised their children in Rosburg, where she worked at Appelo's Store as a clerk for many years. Dolores was an avid Comets fan and never missed a school event or ball game. She enjoyed playing...

Joyce Orr may try to fly under the radar as a busy volunteer, but her warm, generous, and fun loving heart will always give her away. The Cathlamet Woman's Club took notice of all her good work around the community and decided to name her their Citizen of the Year. Orr spends a lot of her time at the Community Garden at Erickson Park in Cathlamet. She has been involved with the garden since its inception in 2010, and she and Winnie Lowsma have been in charge of it for the last four years. "We...
The Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners got an update on how conservation dollars were being used, learned about water pressure issues on Puget Island and approved a resolution that authorized a mutual aid agreement for a water system intertie in Skamokawa. Lia Sealund, a customer service representative, said that the PUD was a little over halfway through the current biennium for their energy efficiency program, which began in October 2017. Thus far they have expended about 72 percent...
To The Eagle, Bill Wainwright’s letter, published last week, was intriguing. If, as he claims, three members of the town council coordinated to meet separately with a consultant they subsequently hired, it would appear to constitute a serial meeting in violation of the Open Public Meetings Act. The fact that two other council members were not invited to meet the consultant is good for them (legally speaking) but also underscores the damaging extent to which the mayor fosters an in group, out-group dynamic on the council and the secrecy he c...
To The Eagle: In the time that my family lived in Cathlamet over the past seven years, we were blessed in some of those years to have received holiday help from the Stars program. Thanks to the generosity of kind local donors in those years, my children were given wonderful gifts of much needed clothing and shoes (which were all we hoped for and anticipated-as it is a needs based program vs a toy wish program), as well as thoughtful bonus gifts of toys which made their Christmas mornings magical. I could not have managed those Christmas...
To The Eagle: I saw the letter to the editor about making an anti-gun control law here in Wahkiakum County and was overjoyed at the idea. The state made this law, fully aware it goes against the intent of the constitution. I dislike where this law is headed; it’s only the first step and needs to be opposed no matter what your feeling about guns are. It’s called civil disobedience, and our nation is founded on it since that day they threw the tea overboard. Don Kinney Cathlamet...
NIPPY BEGINNING--We went from the 40s and 50s right down into the nippy upper 20s at the beginning of this week in West Valley, with the likelihood of it dropping down into the lower 20s by the time you read this, so I do hope you had those pipes wrapped and were ready for those bone-chilling temperatures! I know it's December, but beings I really hate being that cold and dealing with "my water might freeze up" issues, I can only hope this cold spell doesn't last too long. Besides, the holidays are just around the corner and I'd like to be...

River of Life Assembly of God will host a Christmas Concert featuring American Idol Finalist Phil Stacey on Friday, December 14 at 7 p.m. Phil Stacey's first appearance on the sixth season of American Idol was a memorable one, as it was revealed that the United States Sailor was missing the birth of his second daughter in order to audition for the show in Memphis. It was a memorable introduction to the American public, presenting the Jacksonville, FL, native in a very appealing light. Of course, it helped that Stacey (age 29 at the start of the...
