Alenna Whitacre, a 2017 Wahkiakum High School graduate, needed a little cheering up on Monday afternoon, so she spent a few hours on Main Street in Cathlamet playing some original music and covers. "I've just been putting smiles on peoples' faces," Whitacre said. "I've been having a tough time and I wanted to make other people smile." The election for mayor of Cathlamet took a turn in the second round of tallying votes last Thursday. Incumbent Mayor Dale Jacobson claimed a narrow lead in the election, 69-65, over write-in candidate Laurel Waller. When votes were first counted Nov. 7, Waller led 58-53. Waller had filed as a candidate for Council Position 5, and she leads write-in candidate Jean Burnham, who was appointed to the council earlier this year, 96-42. Wahkiakum High School graduate Ashley (Silva) Calvert will lead a group of six optometry students and one optometrist to Tanzania, Africa this December to provide eye care to people in need. Calvert traveled as a team member last December, and will be returning this year to continue serving the people of Tanzania, who otherwise would receive no eye care.
