On November 14 at 7:30 in the morning, Cathlamet resident Mike Paulsen was driving one of the Jerry DeBriae Logging trucks while towing a 60-ton log shuttle. Just as he crossed the Grays River Bridge and rounded a curve, the trailer hitch broke and caused the log shuttle to careen off the trailer and turn upside down at the bottom of the slope below SR 4. Crews gathered November 29 to recover the machine. The 54 year old Paulsen, who was having his birthday during the recovery of the log...
COLD!--As I begin this column, we're just at 32 here Monday morning. Forecasters say we will be fairly dry this week, which almost always winds up meaning "dry but very cold" in the evening hours. Having some dry time would be nice, as I'm sure everyone is in full shopping mode and it's more fun if we're not getting drenched, but I could sure do without the extra cold. Here's hoping you escape any frozen water lines or pipes and you got your RV's all winterized, etc., and you're all set to keep yourself warm and toasty! ANIMALS NEEDS--Please...

Cathlamet celebrated the arrival of the holiday season with its annual lighting festival last Saturday. For children, of course, the highlight was meeting Santa Claus, and, above, if Corben Barth had some suspicions about Santa, he wasn't telling. Photos by Diana Zimmerman....
The proposed 2018 Wahkiakum County budgets have been published, and the public hearing commences next Monday morning, but county commissioners continue to hear requests for modifications and appropriations. On Tuesday, commissioners heard requests from Wahkiakum District Court and the Town of Cathlamet Library for appropriations, and they heard comments in a public hearing of new ferry fares that led them to change their planned new rates. Commissioners had planned a basic 5 percent increase in ferry fares, with additions of some new rates for...
To The Eagle: More great news from our favorite president; President Trump has put forth 59 names for district and appeals courts around the country. He has the potential to flip the balance for the judiciary from liberal to conservative. He has filled eight appeals court seats in just 10 months. Neil Gorsuch, his Supreme Court choice, has the potential to serve for several decades. And his pending nominees for Supreme Court are going to overturn the current 4 to 4, one swing vote alignment to a more originalist and sensible court. My wife...
People checked out the holiday lights in front of the courthouse in Cathlamet in Saturday's lighting festival. Main Street businesses were also open for the evening, and Santa Claus visited with the young at heart in the community center. Photo by Rick Nelson...
MORE RAIN--I guess it's that time of year, as we are getting our fair share of rain, but other than the usual high water and fields turning into lakes, we've managed to get through it all ok. Thankfully our road wasn't flooded over Thanksgiving, so that was a big hurdle to get through for me. I heard of quite a few accidents though, so I'm guessing we could all stand to slow down a little bit, as between the puddles on the road and the critters seeming to want to be everywhere right now, a little extra caution wouldn't hurt. I hope the gusty...

The upgrades include replacing the high side fuses, the transformer, the low bus side, and purchasing regulators, which the PUD would install themselves. It does not include an upgrade for the control building, though...

Photos courtesy of Jennifer Johnson Until recently, Jennifer Johnson lived in Cathlamet. But she downsized, sold her house, and left her job at Wahkiakum Title and Escrow and Hanigan Law Office in order to take up a grand adventure this year--walking the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) from southernmost California to the Washington/Canadian border. Johnson started her journey on April 10 at the Southern Terminus of the trail, near Campo, California. After hiking all the way to Canada, she returned to...

To the Eagle: I know a pot store was opened in Cathlamet but after reading the three letters to the editor in last week’s Eagle I now wonder if a Kool-Aid stand opened too because the writers surely are drinking the stuff. Fact 1, Donald Trump is our president. He is getting no help from Democrats and only marginal help from Republicans to accomplish anything for us especially bringing manufacturing jobs back to America which would benefit every man, woman and child in our country. Fact 2, We need tax reform to boost our economy and create g...
To The Eagle: This letter is from the Kiwanis Club of Cathlamet to thank everyone in the community who found time to attend the St James Gift Bazaar on Saturday making it a great success for our booth. Our success was because of all the donations of your used Christmas items. We had such a huge response of donations we were overwhelmed and not able to even display all of them at the bazaar. We have decided to set up a Used Christmas Items sale at Linda Barth’s, Farmer’s Insurance Agency @ 325 E SR 4 in the garage beside the house. We will run...
