To The Eagle: I am really excited about the upcoming 2017 season at the Julia Butler Hansen Swimming Pool. Last year we invested in an excellent pool liner, two new water heating systems for our showers and a new locker room floor for the ladies. This year we will have a fantastic new pool heater system. Perhaps more significantly, I have chosen to change the lifeguard training and the swim lesson programs to what I think will be a very successful system for us. NOT TOO BAD--It wasn't blazing hot this weekend, but by golly, it was just about perfect for the car buffs that showed up as last year's scalding temperatures were replaced with much milder, and more comfortable ones for the annual Rods and Reels Rod Run that happened this past Saturday! Doris Arlene Takko, 72, was surrounded by family when she passed away May 27, 2017 in Longview, WA. Doris was born in Astoria, OR on May 21, 1945 and spent most of her life living in southwest Washington State. Within a week of being diagnosed with cancer her health rapidly deteriorated. She is survived by her daughter Adrienne Hauff and sons Levi and Jonathan, and Sam Longtain of Cathlamet; and daughter Beth Weber-Guarino of San Jose, CA, and husband Michael Guarino and son Adam. Gordon K. Souvenir 90, of Bay Center, died June 4, 2017, at Longview Hospice. He was born to Joseph and Julian (Longtain) Souvenir on March 9, 1927 on the family farm in Cathlamet. He spent two years in the Army stationed in Trinidad. He worked as a logger and commercial fisherman on the Willapa and the Columbia River. Gordon is survived by his wife Arlene, at home. Tsuga Gallery, of Cathlamet, has announced its first-ever Cathlamet Art Festival. Art on the River is scheduled to take place on September 15 and 16. The Wahkiakum 4-H Robotics Club competed in its last competition of the school year on June 1. The competitions were held at Hayes freedom high School in Camas. The team was represented in all four events: line followers, dragsters, sumo bots and a new event: dance party, which is synchronized robots to music. The Coast Guard coordinated assistance for the disabled tug Mauna Loa who became disabled and began to drift towards the Washington coast on May 23. The 113-foot Mauna Loa along with their 320-foot barge were met by the crew of tug vessel Lauren Foss, who took it into tow and is towing the disabled vessel to Port Angeles. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Columbia River received the report from the master of the disabled tug stating that they suffered engine failure and were drifting toward the coast. Ray Elton (Teed) Prestegard died May 18, 2017 at the hospice center in Longview. He was born April 14, 1935 on Puget Island to Archie and Ethel (Nepsund) Prestegard, with his twin brother Roy. He lived on Puget Island and in Cathlamet and attended Wahkiakum High School. Teed was in the United States Air Force for 21 years, from 1954 to 1975. After retiring from the Air Force he moved back to Cathlamet. In 1967 he married JoAnn Irving. September 16 would have been their 50th anniversary.
