SUPER NICE--We certainly couldn't complain about the weekend weather, unless you don't like the sunshine and warmth that went with it! Temperatures were in the mid-70's on Saturday, so it wasn't totally miserable, but then they went up and they were in the mid-80's on Sunday. A free household hazardous waste turn-in event will be held in Cathlamet on June 3 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the PUD parking lot. Bring fluorescent tubes, straight or curved shapes, CFLs (compact fluorescent), HIDs (high intensity discharge), such as metal halide, mercury vapor and high pressure sodium; any light that contains mercury. 8 WHS graduate Samantha Boyce was recently named Female Athlete of the Year at Lower Columbia College. Boyce, who excelled in Mule sports, competed for the Red Devil basketball and softball teams. Boyce has had offers to play softball at several colleges but is still weighing her options. Wahkiakum County commissioners continue to deal with beach nourishment issues while attending to other business. On Tuesday, commissioners and residents living along eroding Columbia River shorelines discussed hurdles in the way of setting up a program to deposit dredge spoils on those beaches. The county is working to set up a long-term beach nourishment program under the US Army Corps of Engineers. I found a letter from one of them that lived in Cathlamet. She died in 1989 (17/8) and her name was Helga Benson Head. She came to America in 1912 with her mother Berna (Bernhardina) and her grandfather. Her father had probably left Sweden earlier I think. To The Eagle: I’d like to offer another take on the cruise missile strike on the Syrian Air Force base. I noticed in a before-and-after photo spread that showed the Syrian fighter planes we blew to bits were MiG 21’s. Fantastic aircraft when they first flew in 1954 (gas was 12 cents a gallon). The Russians built 10,000 of them, the Chinese probably another 3,000. A lot of them are still around. Even though they are Mach II aircraft, they are gas guzzlers and didn’t have much range. The Julia Butler Hansen House, the oldest house in Cathlamet and Wahkiakum County, will be open Saturday, May 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The house was the residence of the Kimball, Butler and Hansen families for 116 years. It was the home of the late Congresswoman Julia Butler Hansen and was also the home of Maude Kimball Butler, Julia's mother. Maude was a noted Southwest Washington watercolor artist and educator.
