Lind “Mack” Gilbertsen, 73 of Ocean Park, died January 20, 2016 at his son’s home in Cathlamet. Mack was born in Cathlamet on January 10, 1943 to Harold and LaVerle (McDonald) Gilbertsen. He graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 1962 and spent his work life driving truck for Crown Zellerbach, DeBriae Logging and some years owning his own truck. Mona Ruth Starr, 87, of Cathlamet, died on January 22, 2016 in Selma CA . She was born on November 6, 1928 in McKeesport, Pennsylvania to Harry and Ella Starr. She graduated from high school there in 1946. She worked for First National Bank in Ontario, Calif., before starting her career at Bank of America where she worked from 1955-1984. We had 14 students representing Wahkiakum, and over 20 adults all in Olympia last Saturday for the FIRST Lego League Robotics Semi-Final tournament featuring teams from Vancouver, Olympia, Tacoma and Renton. While we did not qualify to advance to the State tournament (only 7 of the 30 teams advanced), we ended our last match with a celebratory group hug. The Chancers, an Irish band from Portland, were at the River Mile 38 Brewery in Cathlamet on Saturday to play at the Dust Off Yer Kilts event. They brought some traditional dancers with them. Wahkiakum County commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday to adopt a proposed ordinance to regulate junk and solid waste on private property. Around 50-60 people attended a public hearing before the vote, and speakers at the hearing voiced opposition and support of the ordinance. The ordinance has been three years in the making. Chuck Beyer, Wahkiakum County Public Works Director, on Monday said that is his understanding that the ferry Oscar B. will be taken off of dry dock tomorrow (Tuesday) and run through a series of US Coast Guard tests to verify that the repairs are complete. The Town of Cathlamet, Wahkiakum PUD and the state Department of Health (DOH) are working on a plan that will keep the local agencies from restricting new connections to their joint water systems. In 2015, they notified the town that a limit on new connections to both town and Puget Island water systems was possible because the town's water plant couldn't pump enough water from the Elochoman River in summer to meet the plant's capacity. Town councilman Dick Swart was in attendance at last Thursday’s Wahkiakum Port District 1 meeting to talk about a proposed interlocal agreement between the Town of Cathlamet and the port to place dredge spoils in the sewage lagoons. Herman (Herb) J. Gessner, 86, died January 19, 2016, at his home on Puget Island. Herb was born April 2, 1929 in Detroit, Mich., the son of Herman J. Gessner Sr., and Marie Christine Gifford. He worked his way to engineer in the aerospace industry, retiring in 1985. He was married to Margaret Alice Stickle for 50 years. She preceded him in death in 1999.
