A VARIETY--This week began with Easter Sunday and I trust you had a good one. We began the day with temperatures at freezing and a whole lot of fog, but it wound up super nice during the day, which lent itself to sitting on the patio and enjoying the sun. Dr. Jeanine Marie Vandevort passed away on Monday, March 30, 2015 at 10:00 AM in the Oncology Unit at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, with her family at her side, after a one and a half year battle against cancer. Dr. Vandevort was born in Longview, Washington on July 21, 1947 to Lyle “Dutch” Vandevort and Roberta Gorman. She was the first of three children. Judith Anne (Judy) was the youngest born to Anna Mae and Lesly Wilson on November 20, 1936 in Los Angeles, California. Judy succumbed to cancer and passed March 3, 2015 in Longview, Washington. Judy’s parents passed prior to her sister Virginia Woolson (Harry predeceased) and brother Robert Wilson (Anita predeceased). Judy met her husband Robert Curtis at the Los Angeles Times where they both worked. They retired and moved to Cathlamet in 1993. Bob passed in 2000. Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce Director Shannon Gildea and her high school intern, Shelbie Abbot, were up bright and early on Friday morning to begin the third annual Hook the Hawg fishing derby. The Cathlamet Fire Department would like to inform the residents of the Town of Cathlamet that fire hydrant flushing will be conducted between April 9 and April 24. During this activity residents may experience discoloration in their drinking water. This is due to iron deposits in the water main becoming dislodged during the flushing of the hydrants. The Toutle Lake Ducks baseball and softball teams came to Cathlamet to face the Wahkiakum Mules on Thursday. In baseball action, the Mules lost their first game 3-6. One person was injured in a two-car collision at 9:06 a.m. last Saturday on SR 4 near County Line Park. According to a report from the Washington State Patrol a 2002 Hundai Elantra driven westbound by Desiree Jensen, Cathlamet, crossed the centerline and collided with an eastbound 2011 Ranger driven by Juanita Irving, also of Cathlamet. The Community Garden is waking from its winter slumber with a work party on April 18th, Saturday from 9 a.m. to whenever we are worn out. Already some onions (yummy Walla Walla) have been planted in the section grown for the donation to local food banks to distribute. The raspberries have been pruned and fertilized along with our donated blueberry plants. Weeding and rototilling will be done on work day to prepare for more planting in the Food Bank section and for individual plots, too. Several individuals have already begun to clean up their p...
Baylee Olsen, daughter of Shelley and Bill Olsen of Cathlamet, was named the 2B Player of the Year by the Washington State Girls Basketball Coaches Association. Julia Ellen Mackenzie, 76, of Cathlamet, passed away Jan. 17, 2015, at St. John Medical Center. She was born July 24, 1938, in Sacramento, Calif., to Charles Albert and Regina (Goldsworth) Beach, the third of 17 children. Julia moved to the local area more than 20 years ago and was a member of the Longview School District’s janitorial staff. She was a member of Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD). The Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce will host its annual “Hook the Hawg” Salmon Derby on April 3-4. This will be the 3rd year for the derby. The event will take place at Elochoman Slough Marina. The “Hook the Hawg” Salmon Derby is a fundraising event for the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce. Funds raised at this event help to provide a high school senior with a scholarship to attend a college, university, or trade school after graduation.
