Thanks to all who participated in this fund raiser for the Grange. We have been invited back to prepare the dinner for the 2014 Finn Festival. There were many comments on what an excellent dinner the Grange prepared. The salmon was superb, Scandinavian p...
To The Eagle: A couple of years ago, in honor of St. James Family Center's 25th anniversary, I ran the Portland Marathon in tribute to them and invited people to donate to SJFC in celebration of their quarter-century of service. The generosity of the community overwhelmed me: More than $800 was donated to this essential, local institution. I was thrilled at this response, but I shouldn't have been surprised: SJFC is extraordinary. For 27 years, now, SJFC has been providing a safe place for children to learn, stay, and grow.My own children, now...

Visitors and friends attending the fair had a wonderful group of people to welcome them through our Wahkiakum County Fair gates. Our admission booths were staffed with some of the nicest people from our local area. I heard some comments back about being a ticket taker last August and they were all good! Maybe it was the little bag of treats Valle or Azery took to the workers about half way through their shifts. Maybe it was knowing they were needed and a big part of helping with fair time volunteer activities. We cannot thank them enough for...
TRANSITION WEEKEND--Well, last week was pretty toasty around here as temperatures were up in the 90s last Friday. However, on the coast it was much cooler that day and we got some of their cloud cover the first half of Saturday. Then the wind picked up and we cleared off quite a bit by afternoon and saw the sunshine and it was nice again. However, by late afternoon it was another story, as that wind came back up and nothing but dark clouds covered us by early evening. Needless to say, the rain that I saw on Sunday morning was no surprise and...

What would her father say now? A child of a US serviceman, Carol Peacock spent her childhood in Germany where, in a region saturated with museums, ancient architecture and artists at work on street corners, she developed an interest in art. Her father didn't encourage that interest, telling her that art was only a hobby and to take up something that would make money. "I kept playing at it," she recalled in an interview Tuesday. "I was precocious and got sent to my room a lot, and I would draw. I liked it." Peacock returned to the US as a...

Tammy Peterson strikes me as someone who is qualified for Treasurer. I have no disagreement with anyone who supports and votes for her. But there is an intangible that makes organizations go: someone around whom the department will solidify and rally as a constructive element of transformational leadership. I think Marlena Silva exhibits this quality. She supports county employees and their...
