To The Eagle: In the past year, the Daily News has had numerous letters referring to the disregard local PUDs have for the payers. The management style seems to be in the image of ENRON. The most telling was at a meeting of Public Utility District #1 of Wahkiakum County this past year when it was announced that there would be no public comment. After a query to the legal counsel of said PUD, I was informed that PUDs are not required to take public input. Question: why are they called Public Utility Districts? P.J. Fleury Cat...

Well, back to the lake in our field and driving through inches of water to get out to the highway. It’s not all bad though. We have seen swans for the first time in years, and the usual flocks of duck and geese, as well as blue herons wading in the water. It looks like more is on the way, so guess I’d better do a little stocking up. My husband and I watched our dogs run down the hill from the house on Sunday and followed to see what they were after. Lo and behold, stuck in an icy pond close to the Grays River, was a sea gull. What a sight! He...
The Washington State Department of Agriculture grant papers for our new bleachers have been signed by all the appropriate people and Mr. Chuck Beyer told me I can order the bleachers! After an email to the company representative I think I may wait a few months before I place that order. The order will take only four weeks to be completed and this time of year it is still too wet to get the area prepared where these bleachers will be set up. Once in place, they will be there permanently because they weigh a lot even though they are aluminum. My...

By a 2-1 vote, Wahkiakum County commissioners approved payment of a $7,720 bill for a contractor's assistance to the county assessor's office. The payment went to Hagen and Son, LLC, for services dating back to July, 2011. Assessor Bill Coons used the firm to provide assistance in getting valuations done by deadline. Commissioners paid the bill unhappily. They and Coons had gone back and forth last year over funding for extra help, and when the commission refused to give Coons the funding he wanted, he said he would engage a contractor....

It’s cold and snowing, yet wintertime projects at the fairgrounds continue to be planned and completed. One of our continuing projects has been to try to make all of our buildings wheelchair accessible. Last summer we built a goat, sheep and pig barn complete with animal pens, built out of the materials we had available. We built the barn on a concrete slab that was designed for a former building. The concrete slab had some dirt areas where we needed to have an aisle, these dirt areas made maneuvering through the barn difficult. T...

Emergency supplies to protect property from flooding are available at fire stations through the county, Wahkiakum’s Department of Emergency Management Coordinator Beau Renfro said. Renfro has both sand and sand bags available, but residents must bring their own shovels. “Those have disappeared too quickly in the past,” Renfro said. “The use of sand bags is a centuries old tried and true method of flood fighting,” according to the US Corps of Engineers Northwestern Division brochure available at the sites. The brochure contains strategie...
Wahkiakum County commissioners voted Tuesday to hold a public hearing on the sale of a Puget Island farm property seized from a Vancouver man convicted of drug charges. The board also held a broad discussion with citizens urging commissioners to cut other county services before cutting the sheriff's department any more. Officers seized the property on East Birnie Slough Road earlier this year. The owner was charged with manufacturing marijuana in Clark County; he pled guilty to diverting electricity around a meter in Wahkiakum County. The...

FIRST COLUMN OF NEW YEAR--Well, here we go into another year and we have started out this new year very nicely; warmer temps and sunshine even! As we had a nice weekend, it was the perfect time to take down the outside lights while they were dry, and by Monday afternoon, they were definitely soaking wet, if they hadn't blown away. That was some strong squall that popped up in the late afternoon/early evening hours; thankfully it didn't last too long. They say we may have some rain by the end of the week, we may even get another break. The last...

People who use the beginning of the year to consider lifestyle improvements may benefit from local support. While county residents are not statistically different from state residents on many health measures, there is room for improvement according to a Washington Department of Health (DOH) survey for 2011. One in nine adults in the county has asthma, and one in 12 adults has had a heart attack, coronary heart disease, angina, or stroke. One out of seven adults reported they currently smoked cigarettes. “Secondhand smoke, especially in cars, i...
