In a special meeting last Friday, the Cathlamet Town Council formally accepted a contractor's bid for constructing a new waste water treatment plant. The new plant will replace the sewage lagoons at the mouth of Birnie Creek with a new facility across SR 4 from Thomas Middle School. Construction should begin this winter. The end of 2011 brought a lot of transitions to the ranks of Wahkiakum County's public employees and volunteers. Three county employees retired after decades of public service--Kathy Durrah, a clerk in the auditor's office, Danny Eaton, a skipper of the ferry Wahkiakum, and Eddie Blaine, a member of the road crew on the Westend. The Wahkiakum Wrestling Club has started a drive to raise funds from the community to purchase new singlets for Wahkiakum Mule wrestlers. The team has 16 wrestlers but club members are looking to purchase around 20 singlets to allow for weight class variation and team growth. "The singlets in use now have seen quite a few seasons and are showing the wear," said club spokesperson Suzanne Mackey. "Each singlet would cost about $75, so our goal is to raise $1,500. NO SNOW--We didn't get a white Christmas in Skamokawa last Sunday, but that was fine with me, as we just had some rain, but it meant being able to come and go and not worry about having to cancel any plans due to icy or snowy conditions. For the last three Saturdays, we've had some decent days and that meant a great turn-out for the free community dinner at the Skamokawa Grange Hall, a fantastic family gathering at the hall the following week, and a wonderful Christmas Eve, so we were all quite thankful for that stretch of nice, dry Saturdays....
