Cathlamet’s Tsuga Gallery, Janet Cimino’s gift and vision to the community, has re-opened following a remodeling that created more display space and a classroom area with a kitchen. The Tsuga Art Association runs the gallery and includes about 25 artists in various media, who have been meeting and electing officers, developing an organizational structure and procedures to admit new members since this summer. Full members staff the gallery in shifts to lower their dues and commissions. The gallery at 70 Main Street is displaying visual art, jewe...

To The Eagle: On October 15, 2010, my father unexpectedly passed away. With his passing came great upheaval and change in every aspect of my life including having to leave our home of 22 years. In the midst of shock and despair, I discovered the isolation and loneliness brought on by grief of such a significant loss in my life. I put all of my belongings into a storage unit and set off on a journey of healing. Throughout my travels through the UK, Europe, Canada, LA and New York, I met many healers and many others who were kind enough to open...

Merry Christmas to the Wahkiakum County Fair! This is what I was thinking after opening a letter from the State of Washington, Department of Agriculture. Last October I applied for a grant from the Department of Agriculture to replace two of our old wooden bleachers. The new bleachers that I asked funding for are aluminum, seat 91 people each, they have an aisle in the middle with a hand rail for easy access to the seats and are enclosed on the back and sides with a chain link guardrail. Knowing we would be facing a limited 2012 budget, I...
The Wahkiakum County Board of Commissioners will hold a special meeting Wednesday, 2 p.m., to consider the possible closure of the upper Elochoman Valley Road. A landslide blocked the road near Milepost 10.3 last Friday, and the County Road Department had to clean rock and debris to reopen the road. On Tuesday, Public Works Director said he was concerned about the stability of the slope above the road, which consisted of fractured basalt. Ringen has asked a geo-technical engineer to check the slope and give an evaluation so that he can prepare...
STILL COLD--This weekend we had a bit of rain, so we warmed up just a bit but it was still plenty cold outside in spite of the sun on Sunday afternoon. They say we're going to have some more freezing nights before we slip back into some rain, so I hope you're all driving carefully and keeping those headlights on as you travel to and from all these holiday gatherings as whether it's rainy or foggy or freezing, it's time to take extra caution with all these nasty conditions and extra traffic on the roadways. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthd...

While she waits for the outcome of two lawsuits filed to stop the implementation of Initiative 1183, which eliminates state-run liquor stores, Cathlamet Liquor Store owner Janelle Seaberg is considering what to do if the law takes effect on June 1. “The clock is ticking,” Seaberg said. “There are a lot of questions that aren’t answered.” Initiative 1183 closes state-run liquor stores June 1, 2012. It allows smaller contractor-run stores like Seaberg’s to obtain a liquor license and remain in business. This week, a lawsuit filed in Cowlitz Cou...

Chair Art Hyland said the group has been meeting without a lot of input from the board of commissioners. One...
To The Eagle: At a time when we are trying to conserve our resources it bothers me that the beautiful greetings cards I receive go in the trash. I went online and found there are places that recycle and repurpose these cards so I'm asking for your help. If you would like to donate your cards to the St. Judes Ranch for children, remove the fronts of the cards, (no Hallmark, American Greetings or Disney cards, please.) Also there should be no writing on the back of the card. Take them to the Tsuga Gallery in Cathlamet, Thursday through Saturday,...

BRR!--I am very happy that we are not flooding or buried in snow or being blown to bits by strong winds, but I have to admit, I'm having a tough time warming up after these last few days of below freezing temperatures and heavy fog, which keeps the sun hidden until mid-day. It's great to see the sun when it comes out, but it sort of fools you into thinking it's warm outside but just step out there with no jacket on and boy howdy, you'll be right back in the house grabbing a coat--brr! However, it looks like we'll be seeing it warm up a bit and...

WET BEGINNING--As this week began, it was soggy on Sunday and made for a miserable day if you had to be outside for any reason. However, it was a perfect day for getting Christmas cards made out, as it's important to mail things early. In our area, we need more letters going out so we can keep this post office open. I hope you're getting letters written to the "powers that be" and also get your Christmas cards mailed out as the countdown is really on.
