The Cathlamet Town Council took a first look at the preliminary budget for 2012 at a special meeting Tuesday night. In its preliminary form, the budget totals $1.27 million in revenue and $1.29 in expenses, a deficit of $17,000 (numbers are rounded). The council will have to make adjustments in the Current Expense Fund of $60,000 if it wants to end the 2012 year with a cash balance on hand, said Councilmember David Goodroe. Wahkiakum County commissioners handled a variety of business at their meeting on Tuesday. The board approved a request from the sheriff's department to create a temporary emergency services department. Sheriff Jon Dearmore and Undersheriff Mark Howie explained that the county is picking up grants that formerly went to the Town of Cathlamet for an emergency services director. To The Eagle: The letter to The Eagle by attorney George Hanigan has raised some serious questions about the direction of the conflict between the fire department and the Town of Cathlamet. The first concern is the actual disagreement between the requirements of the state auditors and the fire districts, in which the auditors apparently were not able to get access to all the required records of the fire districts. Longtime Cathlamet resident, Anne Snyder, 96, passed away at her home September 28, 2011. She was born June 21, 1915 in Trout Lake to William and Elsie (McCray) Sears. She came to live in Cathlamet at age 14, graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 1936 and married Charles Snyder on June 21st of that same year; he preceded her in death in 1983. Anne was a baker for the Snyder Family Bakery in Cathlamet as a young woman. She also worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Norman and Dr. W. L.
