Lifelong area resident, Larry “Pete” Gorley, 69, passed away August 24, 2011 in Longview. He was born March 3, 1942 in Toledo, to Lawrence and Veldonna (Clark) Gorley. He was raised in Skamokawa, attended Skamokawa Grade School and graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 1960. On June 12, 1965 he married Carol Guffey; she survives him at home in Longview. He was born February 3, 1942 to Herbert Shelton and Pauline (Brewer) Carpenter in Alton, Ill. His early boyhood years were spent in Vandalia and St. Louis, Mo. His family moved to Seattle in 1948 where he finished public school and attended college. The Cathlamet IGA Market has new store managers: Stephanie Crouse is store manager, and Andy Lea is assistant manager. Both are long time local residents. Crouse replaced Scott Merriman, who left to work in the St. Helens IGA, which is close to his home. Crouse has worked in the Cathlamet store since 2004. The Third Annual Cathlamet Downhill Corral, a series of internationally sanctioned longboard races, will take place this Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Cathlamet. The longboard races are expected to bring 100 competitors to the area this weekend.
