To The Eagle: I understand the "true" self interest of the opinion writer in The Eagle, April 1, 2010. He would like our country to become the socialist, caring, and "peaceful" utopia he learned about back in college 30 years ago. Oh, if we could only make it that more perfect way, the nation would truly prosper. I just want to suggest growing up. Realizing that chucking the Constitution and throwing away our military capabilities will only bring suffering and death to our way of life and for the other free peoples of this world. Go back to...

We are having another meeting tonight (Thursday) at 6 p.m. to see if that interest is still there and also to see if more folks have picked up on this idea. We will meet at the hall to talk over the progress and to map out any further actions if needed. The coffee pot will be on and the cookie supply may be endless. As before, any questions needing answers before the...

When it comes to knocking clay pigeons out of the sky, Fred Hoven and John Didricksen are starting to get the hang of it. The two Cathlamet men took up trap shooting eight and 10 years ago under the tutelege of the late Johnnie Ray Anderson. After his death, they began working with the Cathlamet FFA trap shooting team, one of Anderson's pet projects. Besides working with the high school shooters, they travel the West to compete with novices and masters. "That's one of the great things about the sport," Didricksen said Tuesday. "You can be...

To The Eagle: The recent firing of Port District 2 Manager Steve McClain has resulted in many letters and a lack of understanding why this happened. It is my opinion that the Port 2 has been a time bomb for years and Steve was in a bad place. In years past I attended the meetings of both port districts. I experienced very different environments. Port District 1 meetings were respectful. Port 2 meetings were confrontational. I remember one frustrated Port 2 commissioner saying, "If you think you can do a better job than I am doing, then you can...

SPRING HAS SPRUNG--Our first day of Spring, March 20, sprang into action with some nice sunshine and temperatures in the high 60s in West Valley, so it was a pretty doggone nice day. We had a couple beautiful days before then, albeit with freezing temperatures in the wee hours of the morning, which dove down to 26 degrees here one night--brr! However, it seems Spring opted to spring a leak as the light rain began to fall Saturday evening and by Sunday, it was down right pouring at times; ah, truly Spring weather! I hope you didn't put off...

Dorothy H. Trimble died peacefully in her sleep in Olympia, Washington on 20 March 2010. She had struggled with Multiple System Atrophy and all its complications for a number of years. She was a resident of Naselle, and only since October 2008, had she and her husband, Robert, moved to Olympia. Dorothy was a “woman of God” and “a faithful servant.” Dorothy was born 10 December 1932 in Fredonia, Kan., to Helene Bauman and Tolly J. Lugenbeal. She was the eldest daughter of three girls. The family moved to Cathlamet, where Dorothy graduated from W...
The Wahkiakum School District board of directors last week approved a proposal to put fencing around the old high school baseball field. The high school baseball team has used the field which is adjacent to the district's elementary and middle school buildings since schools were built in Cathlamet. School officials had planned to move baseball games to new athletic fields near the high school, but poor drainage makes the new baseball field too wet, said Superintendent Bob Garrett. A softball field on the new athletic fields is drier and...
Norman Anderson prepared his traditional oyster stew for the March 23 Grange meeting. Side dishes and desserts were provided by Grange members in attendance. For those of you who were not there, you missed another great meal. Following the potluck was the annual Pies for Charity auction. Grangers were asked to bring pies to be auctioned. Monies raised will be donated to the Skamokawa Grange to go towards a new sound system for their hall. Pies for Charity has a long standing tradition with the Grange. It goes back to the days of Franklin D....
The Lower Columbia Fish Recovery Board came to Cathlamet Monday to gather public input on proposed amendments to the Lower Columbia Salmon Recovery Plan. Only five members of the public, including the press, attended the meeting, but they still had a 90-minute discussion of salmon recovery and related issues. The agency held four public meetings on the plan during the past two weeks. Public comments on the plan, which are available on the Internet at www.lcfrb.gen.wa.us, will be accepted through April 9. The salmon recovery plan was adopted in...
Architects Without Borders will return Saturday to present initial concepts for updating the Cathlamet Town Building and surrounding property. The volunteer group will present the report in a special meeting of the town council at 1 p.m. Saturday. Town officials encourage the public to attend. Around 80 persons attended a meeting in February and gave the architects ideas and input in the initial stage. Town officials hope to gain a vision to develop and use the town hall, library, Pioneer Community Center and surrounding property. The library...
To The Eagle: Last week, I had my purse stolen from the Cathlamet Market parking lot. I have since discovered that I am not the only one dealing with this type of theft. I ask for everyone to be on the lookout for items that might have been discarded from a handbag. Most of these things are important only to the person who lost them. They can be left at the Sheriff's Office which is open 24/7. These are desperate times for some folks and we need to watch out for each other especially to keep our wonderful little part of the world safe. Becky...
GREAT START--As this work week begins, it's absolutely gorgeous after a frozen morning in West Valley. But wait! It was very nice, right up until the wind began to blow and blow hard, and the black clouds rolled in and then it was hailing and snowing and raining and well, it just got nasty! It looks like we could have some cold temperatures and more chances of some freaky weather this week, so I guess winter isn't over just yet. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from March 11-17 are Paul Ehrensberger, Kelly Zink, Larry Bonds, Gretchen M...
