My New Friends the Corvid Family Most people have met corvids yet did not know that was their name. The family of corvids I am referring to is birds of the Corvidae of which there are 120 species worldwide. Commonly recognized in English they are known as the crow family, corvids or the genus Corvus which including the jackdaws, crows, rooks, and ravens, constitutes over a third of the entire family. Where I grew up, I only occasionally saw a raven or a crow and I didn’t know the difference. The reason I became interested is that while I was sl...

Ingenuity in Wahkiakum County People have migrated as individuals, in small groups, and, in many cases, entire peoples have moved their life’s possessions and cultures to new horizons with the intention of creating a better life. Those who settled here in Wahkiakum County brought with them their talents and courage. Those who left their homes from other countries or from the eastern part of the United States braved the new frontiers in the Pacific Northwest. Those who traveled west by wagon train are the ones that fascinate me for several r...
WEATHER--I was happy to see some warmer temperatures at the end of last week and it was very pleasant to see some sunshine coming through the windows that was not accompanied by freezing temperatures outside! However, that all changed as the days went by and we woke up to just 22 degrees in West Valley on Sunday morning and it was down in the teens on Monday morning. I can't say that the freezing temperatures thrilled me, but that clear blue sky and bright sunshine was certainly enjoyable! With temperatures on the minus side in several areas...

Women Empowered Verses “Rule of Thumb” We use words and phrases every day without really knowing the origin of the words or phrases. For example the 1890's time period was referred to as the “Gay Nineties,” and this had no inference to anything remotely sexual. We have also heard the term “rule of thumb” and its understanding that what is practiced is common or that’s the way we do things around here. It originally was a 17th century English law that requires a husband to beat his wife with a switch no bigger than a man’s thumb. The absu...

To The Eagle: Carlton Appelo died on February 12th at 96 years of age. He was a visionary in business, and in support of his community and region. He made regular trips to Washington DC to meet with elected officials to let them know about current projects he supported and what was needed from them in support of those projects. He was a visionary in business, as well as for non-profits. His family has impacted the area in ways we today cannot even truly imagine. Carlton and I worked together to develop and found the Appelo Archives Center...

Life Transitions The reason I am writing this is because of a comment from a young man of 35 years of age who said Grays River had not changed in 20 years. I replied that in 35 years he would look back and see lots of change, to which he agreed. Some of life’s transitions go unnoticed while others happen very quickly, such as a death of a loved one. Some transitions may take decades. For example, the Rosburg Store was once on the river and now on the highway. It opened in 1951, but how many years did it finally dawn on the owners that it was i...
Submitted by Karen Bertroch, Grays River From the Willapa Pilot newspaper, October 19, 1927 “Western Wahkiakum People are Mighty Proud of Their Own Interlocking Telephone System” Over in the Grays Bay district of western Wahkiakum county, the residents and businessmen and ranchers of those fertile valleys are proud of the many civic projects they have put over in the past few years. But one of their greatest achievements, which carries a strong trace of real community patriotism, cooperation and cohesiveness, is the organization of the Wes...

Before a big crowd at Mark Morris High School on Saturday, the Wahkiakum Mules girls basketball team showed why they were the number one ranked 2B team in the state, overwhelming the Rainier 74-13 Lady Mountaineers in regional basketball tournament play. "Last night's game was a blast," Coach Rob Garrett said. "The girls were locked in and were great at the tiny details, something we've really been focusing on this week. It was a great team win to give us some momentum heading over to Spokane."...
