The Naselle Comets boys basketball team traveled to Ellensburg for a regional game on Saturday to face Sunnyside Christian, the number one 1B seed in the state. The Comets lost 57-39. On Wednesday, Naselle began the 1B state tournament in Spokane against Garfield-Palouse. A score was not available by the time the paper went to press. It was a loser out game. If the Comets won, they will take on seventh seed Almira-Coulee-Hartline on Thursday at 9 p.m. Lady Comets tally victory Three quarters in...
Line Foreman Shane Pfenniger stopped by the Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners meeting to recount the two hour county wide power outage event that took place last week and explain how the crew responded. “The power went out at my house,” Pfenniger said. “Immediately I got text messages and phone calls from all the employees here. That indicated that it was a county wide outage. I called the crew in, we made our way to the substation and we called the dispatcher from BPA.” Normally, Pfen...
QUIET START--As this week begins, it was just at freezing in West Valley, but other than that, this past Sunday was mostly cloudy but there were even a few sun breaks, so that was nice. I understand the weather for the end of the week may be a bit more challenging and depending on where you are, you could even have some snow or icy conditions. If we do get some nastier weather, I hope folks will slow down as many of those accidents could have been avoided if they were driving for the current conditions and not the posted speed limits, which are...

A Special Thanks to Eagle Readers As long as I have been here I have done a lot of exploring on these old legs along many of the rivers as well as putting a lot of miles traversing the roads in the area. I also have spent many hours at various museums and doing my own research with books as well as use of the internet. Some of what I write about may be a bit redundant for some of you yet at the same time it can be informative or comical. I hope that what I write will bring fond memories that lift your spirit. My primary intent is to bring more...
Submitted by Superintendent Lisa Nelson On February 19, a special meeting was held at 5 p.m., prior to the regular meeting of the Naselle/Grays River Valley School District Board of Directors. Directors and teachers who work in the music and vocational departments toured the facility’s wing, which was constructed in 1957. The purpose of the meeting was to begin conversations around upgrades and modernization to the facility. Additional workshops are being planned for the future. At 6:30 p.m., the regular board meeting was called to order. In p...
Wahkiakum County commissioners heard a plea for drainage work near Deep River, decided how to address the latest challenge to their dredging permit process and addressed other issues when they met Tuesday. Wirkkala Road resident Nick Nikkila expressed frustration with drainage issues that cause flooding in that neighborhood. Two culverts and tidegates on Wirkkala Road need to be replaced; they're failing and too small to handle drainage in heavy rain events. He showed a video of his vehicle ploughing through water to reach his driveway and his...

This new snow we had is sure to conjure up memories because we do not get snow like one would in other places in the world like the artic or Antarctica. As a young child in my home town, Wahkiakum snow like this would have had a big impact on my imagination. Imagine going to bed as usual. You shut off the lights and crawl into bed and pull the covers over your shoulders as you roll over on your right side. Looking up through the bedroom window you see the grey night sky that has left a soft snow that is gently hugging the tree limbs. You know i...
The Naselle Finnish American Folk Festival is sponsoring its first event at the new Naselle Community Center. The Naselle Congregational Church has gifted the building to the Finn Festival group and they will hold their first kick-off event on Saturday, February 16, beginning at 5:00 p.m., with a concert full of talents. The talents will include Carl Wirkkala, country songwriter and musician, Richard Ellis, vocalist, Kim Angelis, professional violinist, Gene Quilhaugh, folk singer and Lydia Ballif on piano. A spread of local fares and ethnic...
“The best laid plans of mice and men” can be upset by winter weather. It is certainly causing trouble for the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association District 4 2B and 1B basketball tournaments. Every day there has been another postponement, due to weather. The Wahkiakum Mules girls basketball team’s first district game was scheduled for Saturday, February 9, but as of Tuesday night, they still hadn’t played. It was the same for both of the Naselle teams, boys and girls. Fingers...
Monday night two minutes after the power outage started the Wahkiakum County Amateur Radio Club emergency communications network was activated using the Incident Command System protocol (W7ERY Ron, WA6TTR Gordon, KG7WSQ Jim, KC7IVJ Dale and KE7IHH Larry) Within 10 minutes we had five more stations on our county emergency simplex frequency of 145.55 mHz (K7SH Steve, KB7AJY Jean, KI7YMM Peter, AE6DI Mark, AE7RD Dave). We quickly determined that Cathlamet, Elochoman Valley and Puget Island were out. So, within 10 minutes we had a total of 10...
WEATHER--Temperatures dropped on Sunday night and by Monday morning, we had a slight trace of snow/ice on the lawn, but that little bit was gone by eleven so we certainly didn't get any big snow storm, which was fine by me! People in higher elevations got more, and even that depended on where you were located. I know the folks in the Seattle/Everett region got quite a bit of the white stuff and it was well below freezing Monday morning, with very windy conditions, so oddly enough, they were worse off than we were, which is pretty rare. Tuesday...

[Editor's note: This column has been corrected: The initial version of this article incorrectly stated that the Naselle Lutheran Church had closed; the Naselle Congregational Church has in fact disbanded its congregation and passed its property to the Finnish American Folk Festival organization. We apologize for the error.] Rosburg News For those who have attended or are planning to attend the Naselle/Grays River Valley senior luncheon on Wednesday, I would like to clarify a few things. First of all, those who are 55 and older can join, not 60...
NICE BEGINNING--This week began with some cool temperatures and lots of fog in West Valley, but the sun that followed was certainly enjoyed! We had the same thing at the end of last week, as Saturday was dry and decent too, so having a whole weekend dry was a big plus. However, I understand that by mid-week we will probably get wet again, so while we get lulled into almost Spring-like weather, we have to remember it is still winter, so we can't get too complacent! GREAT FEED--That nice dry evening we had this past Saturday worked out just...

Funny points to ponder, the beach, and a penny for your thoughts I only have one timetable and that is to meet my deadline for the Wahkiakum County Eagle, other than that I have no sense of time. I’ll give you an example and I have witnesses. On Wednesday I went to the Valley Bible Church for their potluck in association with the Naselle/Grays River Valley Seniors. I arrived a little before noon when they serve lunch. I usually see more cars by this time and many familiar ones, but today there were only about a dozen cars. As I entered the c...

Superintendents at Wahkiakum School District and Naselle/Grays River Valley School District were asked to respond to how the Washington State legislature’s new system to fund schools and cap local levies at $1.50 per $1,000 will affect their budgets. Wahkiakum School District: “There is an equity issue in the way the state implemented the McCleary decision,” WSD Superintendent Brent Freeman said this week. “Wahkiakum School District is one of many small school districts that are negativ...
Happy new year! Well the new year is getting started with a kick and the Sheriff's Office is abuzz with several new deputies! Two of our new recruits already lived in our county at the time of hire and all of them are excited and dedicated to protecting and serving this county with professionalism and honor, and all have a public servant's heart. Upon graduation from the academy we will be posting their photos, bios, and introducing them to the community. We are looking to fill one corrections/dispatch position and are going to have a local...

It might be said “Who are you to tell us about trees?" I may know more or less about trees than most, however, from my observations, clear cutting of our forests leaves an ugly scar on the landscape that will clear up in time. I just do not like the way it looks and the impact it has on the environment. I highly sympathize with those who are employees of the logging/lumber industry and in no way want them to lose their jobs. Is there a better way to make wood products without destroying the beauty of our forests while being able to maintain t...
