A week ago my house became filled with laughter and fun after the arrival of three of my teen granddaughters. We have been to the beach, to the Astoria Column, shopping, hiking, hot-tubbing and just plain being lazy. I needed this, and to top it off, now my niece and her daughter have arrived. This is heaven with the young giggles and music in the car and in the house. Such fun. I didn’t plan too well for the two-week visit with the granddaughters as it cut into the Father’s Day weekend. So I will make a quick trip to California on Friday to...

Valedictorian Raja Estes began Naselle High School's Class of 2017 commencement on Saturday with gratitude, giving thanks to all. She was followed by faculty speaker Scott Smith, a science teacher, who used snake reproduction as a vehicle for advice. "Life lesson number one," Smith said, "if you store up snake eggs, you ultimately get snakes. In plain language, the thoughts, attitudes and beliefs you nurture today will have significant consequences in the future." He spoke of the snake eggs of...

Raja Estes is valedictorian for the 2017 Naselle/Grays River School District's Class of 2017. She will graduate with a 3.96, a GPA which she maintained while attending Running Start classes at Clatsop Community College for the last two years. "I have enjoyed it from the beginning because it was challenging," Estes said in an email. "It allowed me to take a variety of classes that Naselle didn't provide, as well as prepare me for what my next years at university will be like. Being someone who...
With a GPA of 3.92, Kyryn Jacot is the salutatorian for Naselle/Grays River Valley School District's Class of 2017. Jacot was accepted to Central Washington University, where she plans to study biology. "Ever since I was a little kid I've loved working with animals," Jacot said. "That is my end goal to have a job that is working with animals." She considered being a veterinarian, but that would require her to be in school. Despite the obvious work it has taken to be salutatorian, she would...
Comettes claim state championship Lillian Zimmerman’s third throw in the shot put was enough to bring home a first place medal at the State 1B Track and Field Meet in Cheney, which took place last weekend. A MIX--We had some pretty warm days last weekend, but by the time you read this, it's supposed to have cooled down and maybe even rained, so we have really had some "yo-yo" weather around here lately! Umbrellas for shade one day and wearing flip-flops and the next thing you know, we're still using umbrellas but we've got boots on to wade through all the puddles! Let's just hope the weekend will be decent as there's a lot going on and we'd all rather see dry than wet! SPECIAL DAYS--The following people will celebrate their birthdays from June...

After I posted my column last week from California telling everyone how hot it was, the weather took a turn to cooler. The rest of my trip was in the high seventies and low eighties. Nobody wanted me to leave, because apparently I brought the nice temps with me. It turns out the weather was warmer here than down there. Go figure. I just know it is so good to be home in the trees, green grass and quiet. No traffic noise, sirens and weird folks walking up and down the sidewalks. Three of my granddaughters will be flying in on the 7th for a...
Dana Hamp is no friend to dirt. "Dirt fears me," she laughed. "I've always been into cleaning, even when I was a child. I call it cleaning therapy." Hamp's family moved to the Naselle area the same year Mt. St. Helens blew. Her brothers graduated from Naselle High School, but when her parents divorced, she moved to Seattle with her mom. After finishing high school, she tried beauty college. It didn't take. So back to school she went. To support herself while she furthered her education, she...
