Standing at the starting line, amidst thousands of the world's top runners, one can only think of the many miles that have led to this single race. Steeped in tradition, the Boston Marathon ranks among the most prestigious road-racing events on earth. Seasoned runners aspire to run a fast enough “qualifying time” to even be able to toe the starting line here. Annie Strange, a mother of three boys, from Naselle achieved this grandiose goal last week. “I am grateful to have had the chance to experience it,” Strange said of the running of the 116t...
Beautiful weekend with lots of hugs from grandkids, Emmett who is now two and his baby brother, Wyatt who is four months. Thank you, Shane and Delena for the baby fix. It was wonderful. It was good to see youngest son Carl as well. Also I must apologize to Shane for saying he was only 25 years old when he was 26. Old age memory setting in, I guess. In a few more years he would have thanked me for that mistake. News from Naselle: It’s a busy week at Naselle-Grays River Valley School. The sports calendar is as follows: Thursday-home track meet a...

In the spirit of Arbor Day, three, four and five year olds attending Naselle Play and Learn came together this week to plant, nurture and celebrate trees. Led by their teacher, Megan Tienharra, preschool students learned about Arbor Day through various activities. Tienhaara displayed different parts of trees on a nature table which included bark, needles, branches, leaves, buds and cones. Then continuing a national tradition that first began in April, 1872, students worked with Campbell Group Forest Engineer Jeff Linquist of Grays River to get...

He graduated from Naselle High School, then the University of Washington. He was act...
Well, Mother Nature was pretty nice to us for a few days but topped off the weekend with a nice deluge of 1.3 inches of rain and wind, according to our weather station. Everything smells so nice with all the flowers blooming and trees budding out. The birds are picking up the dog hair off our lawn that we brush from the dogs. They actually fight each other in the air for the soft tufts. Fun to watch. News from Naselle: Naselle-Grays River Valley sports calendar for this week include: Thursday-track meet at Northwest Christian at 3:30 p.m., base...

News from Naselle: Members of the Naselle Marimba Band spent part of their spring break at a world famous venue and did a mighty fine job of entertaining many while they were at Disneyland. This talented group is to be commended for their efforts in giving so much pleasure to those who hear them. It is pretty obvious when one sees and hears them that they are playing from the heart. What an enjoyable group. Keep up the good vibes. The community is very proud of all of you. Check out their photos on the school website. It looks like the group...
WET AND COLD--As the weekend ended, there was still plenty of rain falling and even some snow. A light layer of snow was visible on the hills towards East Valley. The work week began with a bit of a break and everyone was thoroughly enjoying that sunny, dry, although rather blustery Monday. However, it didn't last as Tuesday morning is nothing but raindrops. The forecasters say we'll have a few wet days and then our Easter weekend should be a nice one and temperatures could even reach the 70s. One can always hope! EASTER DOINGS--Speaking of...
The fundamental need of humans to talk, to express themselves and try to make sense of their inner lives, is abundantly on display in a remarkable documentary film from Finland. “Steam of Life” goes deep into the inner sanctum of Finnish life, the sauna. Amid the steam, ordinary men not known for their way with words create everyday poetry as they struggle to articulate their innermost feelings. This thought provoking documentary will be shown on April 12, starting at noon at the Appelo Archives Center, 1056 SR 4, Naselle, WA. A discussion wil...

Last Thursday, the Wahkiakum Lady Mules overcame Naselle’s four run first inning to 10-run their KM counterparts in a 14-4 six-inning victory at Cathlamet. Brieanna Olsen picked up the victory for the Lady Mules, settling down after issuing three walks and a pair of singles in the first inning to allow only two hits over the next five innings. One of those two hits was a one-out double in the third inning, but she was quickly erased when the next batter lined out to second baseman Morgan Elliott, who quickly got the ball to shortstop Tori W...
The Wahkiakum Mule baseball team's offense was a no show through the first four innings last Thursday, but the bats began to awaken in the fifth when they scored a pair of runs before the final out was recorded in the 12-2, five-inning loss to Naselle. Two days later, the Mules took to the road for Mossyrock and wound up on the wrong end of a pair of crushing defeats, falling 10-0 in the opener and 16-1 in the nightcap, both five-inning outings. Steven Doumit and Leo Onodera each went 2 for 3 with a double and a single in game two, with Doumit...

We’ve had just about everything imaginable this week, weather-wise. Lake Fred (our hayfield) is up, with ice around the edge and snow covering the rest of the field. The ducks are swimming around like it’s a normal routine for them. The smelt must be coming in to the Grays River just west of Duffy’s Tavern, as I have counted as many as 22 bald eagles in the trees overlooking the river. The sea gulls are pretty happy in Gudmundsen’s field as well. News from Naselle: Sports scheduled for the Naselle-Grays River Valley School this week include...
It looks like a few more snow flakes are in the forecast for this week. It would sure be nice to have more than one sunny day, though. At least then you could finish at least one outdoor project. I guess it wouldn’t be Washington without this kind of weather. Guess I’ll stick around and enjoy whatever comes. News from Naselle: Naselle-Grays River Valley student and daughter of Lonnie and Kim Eaton, Taylor Eaton took first place in the Long Beach Elks Hoop Shoot in December. She then attended the district competition at Huntington Middle Sch...
