    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 1, 2011

News from Naselle: September already, and school begins again. It seems like summer just started, and now it’s time for new classes, fall sports and cooler weather once again. At least the nice daytime temperatures seem to be hanging around. Today (Thursday) is the first day of school for the 2011/12 class year at the Naselle-Grays River Valley School District, and the sports teams have already had a few weeks of practice. Sports schedules for this week include: Friday, football at home with Ilwaco at 7 p.m.; Wednesday, volleyball at Knappa a...

  • Youth leaders say teachers need to confront students who use

    Ruby Murray|Aug 31, 2011

The Wahkiakum School District Board met August 24 and approved contracts for district staff and heard from youth leadership about additional efforts needed to reduce marijuana use. Districts across the state have handled the state legislature’s 1.9 percent cut to teacher wages reductions differently, Superintendent Bob Garrett said. Some have no funds to offset losses and others have large enough cash reserves to make up all of the teachers’ loss. The Wahkiakum board agreed to offset the loss to teacher’s salaries by reducing the hours they...

  • Locals appear in national magazine

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 25, 2011

DRIPPY BEGINNING--This work week is beginning a little damp, not making any hay-makers happy, but my lawn is probably thrilled as it was looking a little parched. The full week of dry weather that some forecasted fell apart as a weak system came in and gave us some heavy cloud cover Sunday evening and this light rain Monday morning. By Monday evening the drizzle turned into down right rain, and the clearing that I thought we'd have by Tuesday, certainly didn't show up here Tuesday morning either. It's another wet one I'm afraid. FAIR TIME--It...

A workshop on producing biochar has been added to Farmstock, KMUN's regional homegrown festival Labor Day Weekend, September 3-4, at Fred's Farm in Naselle. Karnofski joins the roster of workshops to be presented all day Saturday at Farmstock. Scheduled for three sessions, visitors to the...

  • DNR crew's hard work benefits Johnson Park

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 25, 2011

I don’t know about you but the warm rain was quite refreshing at the beginning of this week. Don’t get me wrong, I like the sunshine, but when it gets above 80, it’s too hot. That was one of the many reasons to leave California. The farmers making hay probably didn’t appreciate the rain much as many of them are still trying to get the bales into the barns, and there are still quite a few bales in the fields. It looks like more good weather on the way though, at least through the weekend. News from Naselle: One more week until school begins...

  • Lindgren cabin still looking for volunteers

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 18, 2011

We enjoyed the week visiting with our nephew and niece from California. Didn’t get a whole lot done on the house but the hardwood flooring is just about ready to go down. Who knew that any moisture variance would make it impossible to install until the percentage was right. We didn’t. Hopefully readers will learn something from our experience, regarding hardwood floors in our moist area. When you spend lots of money to purchase the product, you don’t want it to buckle once it’s installed. We are very happy with the end result though, and onl...

  • Pig roast time down in Rosburg

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 4, 2011

It looks like summer has actually arrived. Gardens are finally growing, farmers and making hay, and the sun is shining for more than a couple of hours a week. I guess we had better enjoy this break as it may be gone in a week, if Mother Nature stays true to form. Speaking of haying, Darrel Sotka just pulled in with his mower to mow our fields. I hope he doesn’t get lost in the high grass. Don’t forget the summer activities going on at the Timberland Library in Naselle. Summer is the perfect time to catch up on your reading, while sitting in a c...

  • Appelo Archive Center evolving

    Ruby Murray|Jul 21, 2011

The heart of the Appelo Archive Center in Naselle is hundreds of feet of video tape recording the lives of people in western Wahkiakum County and eastern Pacific County, but the Center is multi-faceted and still growing. On the first floor, the former Appelo grocery store houses Bobbi Caton’s Creative Flair Flower Shop as well as the archive’s gift shop and visitor center, with a Grays River covered bridge exhibit on display. Upstairs, where Santa once visited children when the grocery operated, there is an elevator-sized display of local wom...

  • Johnson Park takes on new look

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 21, 2011

First of all, an apology and a correction. In last week's column I wrote about a July 3 barbecue. The barbecue was held at Bobby Olmstead’s home, and was attended by Eddie Wirkkala, his son Warren, his girlfriend and daughter, Ralph Olmstead of Naselle, his friend Susie from Long Beach, Junior Johnson of Vader and Bob and Geri Lee from Grays River. Thank you for the corrections Geri, and my apologies to those I identified incorrectly. I had the pleasure of attending a special meeting with Wahkiakum county commissioners and Chuck Beyer on T...

  • Sheriff's Department has new officer

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 14, 2011

What an absolutely wonderful week we had with our kids, grandkids and dogs last week. They must have brought the sun from California and taken it back with them when they left. At least it’s not cold. For the first time our grandkids didn’t want to go home. They all learned how to drive a stick shift car while they were here, learned how to shoot a .22, how to build a brick fire pit, went swimming in the river, picked salmon berries and they all got along with each other. That was quite an accomplishment in my book of raising kids. News fro...

  • Board cool to assessor's extra help plan

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jun 30, 2011

Wahkiakum County commissioners discussed a variety of issues ranging from assessor department staffing to state contract renewals but didn't act on them at their meeting this week. To avoid having to make difficult decisions on the same meeting day an issue is presented, commissioners have adopted a policy of hearing an issue at one meeting and voting on it at a following meeting. Assessor Bill Coons ran into this policy and more when he asked the board to authorize him to hire extra help for a maximum of 79.5 hours a month for the rest of the...

  • Changes planned for Wahkiakum on the Move

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jun 23, 2011

Changes are in store for Wahkiakum on the Move, Wahkiakum County's public transportation system. System managers said Tuesday they are planning to expand their schedule and that they're going to start charging ridership fees, effective August 1. The news came Tuesday as the county board of commissioners signed a new contract with the Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT) that will increase funding for the program. In other business Tuesday, the board heard project funding requests from Diking District No. 1 of Puget Island. Bob...

  • Countdown on for Smoky Water Follies

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jun 16, 2011

WET AND MUGGY--As this week began, we were back to raindrops off and on but some sun breaks made things steamy at times and it was pretty muggy on Monday really. Of course, anybody who has been fighting to get their lawn mowed between showers, knows that this is just the kind of weather that makes the ole grass grow before your eyes. They say we're going to get some summer like weather, and with summer officially starting next Tuesday, I'm sure we're all hoping that's true! It's almost impossible to get much done with only a day and a half of...
