Congressman Brian Baird announced last week that schools in Southwest Washington would receive more than $45 million in emergency education funding. The money has been released for education-related jobs and will maintain programs for low-income students and students with disabilities. The schools will receive $14.7 million in Title I funds and $30.4 million in IDEA (Individuals with disabilities Education Act) funds effective immediately. The Finnish American Folk Festival is a recent recipient of a $500 Quick Grant from Humanities Washington. This financial support will enable the Cultural Programing Series of the 2008 FAFF to offer presentations and discussions led by Wayne Beals of Puyallup about the Civil War in Finland and about the role Finland played during World War II. Both Naselle Comet boys and girls basketball teams were eliminated from the Southwest 2B District basketball tournaments last week. The Columbia River Estuary Study Taskforce (CREST) announced this week the award of a Community Salmon Fund grant to the Naselle-Grays River School District. The grant is funded through the Lower Columbia Fish Recovery Board and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to CREST in the amount of nearly $24,000. The grant will provide a greenhouse on school grounds that will focus on native plants. The Naselle Comets knocked the Wahkiakum Mules out of the SW Washington Class 2B basketball tournament with a 69-39 win last Saturday. The Comets led 24-7 after one quarter and 39-15 at halftime. Voters in the Naselle/Grays River Valley School District appeared to be passing a special levy in initial counting on Tuesday. The combined Wahkiakum-Pacific vote was 436-240, giving it 64.49 percent approval. At least 60 percent is needed. In Wahkiakum County, 164 voters supported the levy, 59.42 percent, and 112 opposed it, 40.58 percent.
