Wahkiakum County commissioners responded to constituents' concerns when the board met Tuesday. Commissioners also authorized purchase of commercial quality refrigeration equipment for the county fair and further moves to address flood damage to kitchen equipment. Puget Island resident Olaf Thomason asked commissioners what could be done to improve restroom access at County Line Park. Access to the restroom building is limited to RV campers, he said, and two portable toilets are set up for travelers. Thomason said he had recently stopped at the...
The Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners learned about Northwest River Partners and heard reports at their bimonthly meeting on Tuesday. Kurt Miller spoke to the commissioners about his role as executive director for the Northwest River Partners, and the organization’s goals and strategies. “Our goal is to make sure what is happening with the natural gas industry doesn’t happen to hydropower,” he said. The organization is active on social media, has written several op-eds, and is working...
Emilie and C.J. Harris wasted little time when they settled into their new home in the Elochoman Valley last year. Emilie's dream for a flower farm could wait no more. "Gardening and farming is seasonal," Emilie said. "There is only so much you can do in the winter. If you wait a season because you take a long time to build stuff, you miss out on spring and summer and fall. That's a lot of plants you could be planting, a lot of learning. We'd rather do it quicker and learn from the mistakes...

SNAP and EBT recipients can save on fresh and frozen fruit and vegetables by participating in a SNAP Produce Match program, which is available all year round at all three Safeway stores in Longview. When shoppers spend at least $10 on those items, they receive an additional $5 coupon for their next visit. Starting in June, Safeway will match that $5. The last day of the Safeway match has not been announced. “It’s a good time to utilize this program,” Heather Odom, a Healthy Community Speci...
(Editor's note: This story has been corrected to say that the council will meet Tuesday, June 21, not Monday, June 20, which is now the Junteenth Holdiay.) The regularly scheduled meeting of the Cathlamet Town Council set for June 6 has been cancelled, Clerk/Treasurer Sarah Clark announced Thursday. The announcement said there was a lack of agenda items for the meeting. The council's next meeting is set for 6 p.m June 21, a Tuesday. The council normally meets on the third Monday of each month, but this year, it is the Junteenth Holiday. The...
Post 5297 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and other members of the community took some time to remember the men and women who lost their lives in service to their country on Monday for Memorial Day. "We owe them a debt that can never be repaid," Post Commander Bill Tawater said. "It is our responsibility to recognize their service, honor their devotion to duty, and mirror their devotion by doing whatever it takes to ensure their sacrifices and hopes will forever be remembered...
The Washington State Department of Transportation is still working to schedule two projects that will affect traffic between Longview and Astoria. The contractor is waiting for the right weather to complete work to add pavement markers and finish crosswalk work along the stretch of SR 4 through Cathlamet. "Because this work requires dry, warm weather, they are anticipating that they can schedule the work within the next couple of weeks," Celeste Dimichina Communications & Media Relations specialist said Tuesday. At the end of the project the...
Updates have been coming in from Ron Wright, advisor to the Wahkiakum High School and 4H Mecha Mules robotics team, which is in Washington D.C. and Maryland this week for a little international robotics competition and a tour of the capitol. One thing is certain, it's hot. On Sunday, the team flew from Seattle to Washington D.C. after their initial flight was canceled. No harm done, except their seats were no longer together. They arrived at their hotel and headed to a nearby store to forage...
The joys of publishing: In our summer magazine published last week, we misspelled the name of Carlton Appelo (correct), whose influence and ingenuity are still seen throughout the county. We also got the date changed on the front pate of The Focus, but on inside pages, the year said 2021, not 2022. We looked at those things and didn't see them....
It’s time for the Senior Class of 2022 to start checking off those final boxes, completing assignments, taking tests, picking up caps and gowns, turning in books and Chromebooks as they get ready for a few more final events together and one big graduation ceremony in front of friends and family. Graduation at Wahkiakum High School is outdoors for this year’s 35 seniors, who will be seated at the football stadium on Friday, June 10, at 6 p.m. All are welcome. Speakers include Valedictorian Meg...
Megan Leitz has been named valedictorian for the Class of 2022 at Wahkiakum High School after maintaining a 4.0 GPA the last four years. Her parents, Steve and Stephanie Leitz, never placed any importance on appearance, she said. Instead, they taught her that her most important tool would always be her brain, and that it will carry her, wherever she goes. In June it will take her all the way to Annapolis. Leitz has been accepted to the Naval Academy, a place where she will get to practice many o...

With a 3.92 GPA, Gabe Moon is the salutatorian for the Wahkiakum High School Class of 2022. The senior spent the last two years participating in the Running Start program at Lower Columbia College. Recently, an administrator told him that he has remained more active at WHS while in the program than any other student before him. Over the years, he's played football and basketball, wrestled, and thrown for the track team. Despite only being on the track team his freshman and senior year he was...
While Josh Chadwick's GPA is the second highest in the senior class, there is only a tiny speck between the first and second GPA's. His downfall, he admits easily, was calculus. Josh has a very active mind that wants foremost to learn about things that interest him, like computers. When around six years old, he learned computer technology. Then he took lessons in coding and building games on-line. He has always loved computers, so for him to study computers and robotics in college is a perfect...

Thorin Loeks is on a canoe journey from Astoria to the Gulf of Mexico, with a bit of cycling in between. A singer/songwriter, social worker, and grad student, Loeks grew up in the Yukon Territory, where his father owned an adventure canoe guiding company for 20 years. "I grew up paddling and being out appreciating nature," Loeks said. He's going to be doing a lot of that for the next few months. An amiable and approachable fellow, Loeks makes friends easily. In Cathlamet, new friends kept him...

Not so long ago, the Wahkiakum Dollars for Scholars organization held a Rods and Reels car show every year to raise scholarship funds for local students. Sadly, it was time to retire the much loved event. A couple years ago, the group considered putting on something called a bike fondo in the county, but when covid-19 hit, they had to re-evaluate. The organization, which has been raising money for scholarships to help local students since 2000, decided to hold an online auction last year after...
There were few surprises from candidates for 2022 elections when the filing period ended last week. With county Assessor Bill Coons having announced his retirement; Deputy Assessor Falon Hoven filed for the office as an Independent. Cathlamet native Holly McKeen, a deputy prosecuting attorney for Cowlitz County, is challenging incumbent Wahkiakum County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Bigelow. Other incumbent county officials filed for re-election without any opposition. Across the state and region, however, there will be races for all offices. US...
Because of an editing error in last week's edition, the last paragraph or Richard Erickson's letter to the editor was corrupted. It should have read: "I support our constitutional republic and the Electoral College, which I believe should be in our state so each of our county’s votes can have meaning instead of just three counties deciding what the rest of the state does; that is called democracy....
Facilities and funding continued to be hot topics for the Wahkiakum School District Board of Directors, but the board's May meeting on Tuesday started with a presentation from teachers Audrey Petterson and Tina Merz on the high school and middle school English Language Arts programs, a new bus, and a tour of students’ artistic endeavors. The writing process was the focus of Petterson and Merz’s presentation. The teachers talked about the skills the students were learning, and the strategies the...
