Nearly two weeks ago, Gloria Johnson of Cathlamet called The Eagle because she was waking up most mornings to find the sod recently placed in her back yard flipped over in multiple places, hindering it’s growth. It must be raccoons, she thought. They’d been seen in the neighborhood, on a fence, in a nearby tree. She did everything her friends suggested, applying Irish Spring soap, deer deterrent, and a $200 chemical that would kill grubs and not harm any cats. She bought motion sensor lig...
Saturday afternoon started with a vendor fair at the Elochoman Slough Marina, and at 5 p.m., the Light Parade trekked from the marina, down Main Street and back to the starting point, bringing holiday cheer to people who turned out to view....
Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday authorized expansion of Skamokawa’s Fire District No. 2, passed resolutions setting tax levy rates for 2023 and addressed other items of business. Fire District 2 had presented petitions signed by at least 60 percent of the residents of the proposed annexation, and the county auditor’s office confirmed the proposal met the requirements for annexation. Prior to annexation, district boundaries included properties close to SR 4 and Skamokawa valley roads. The annexation will take in new construction and...
During public comment at the Wahkiakum County Port 1 Board of Commissioners meeting last Thursday, Javier Sanchez, one of the owners of River Mile 38 Brewery, expressed a concern about sewer and electrical lines to the new taproom at the waterfront, which had been placed in the same trench. “[General Manager] Dan Kay with the PUD is not a big fan of the sewer running within those lines, in case there is any access needed underneath,” he said. “It has now become a problem for us.” Port 1 counsel...
It's been a frustrating few days for Gloria Johnson in Cathlamet. Several mornings in a row now, she's discovered that something is turning over the newly laid sod in her back yard. It hasn't had a chance to take root, and may not if these high jinks continue. She's come to the conclusion that it's raccoons, trying to get an early breakfast of grubs. Raccoons have been seen in the neighborhood, Johnson said, walking on a nearby fence or living in a tree across the street before it was cut down....
Wahkiakum County Port 2 recently opened the doors to their new offices in the former Skamokawa United Methodist Church, now renamed the Carlton Appelo Center at Skamokawa Vista Park. "I wanted to put life back into the building for the community," Port 2 Assistant Manager Terina Davis said. "There are still a lot of unknowns about the main hall. It may be used as a place for the community to gather, with couches and TVs or technology centers. Something to benefit not just Vista Park and the...

I spent Sunday afternoon at the home of the Garlock family including Trenton and Megan along with their children, their oldest child, daughter Auspyn, middle son Tregan, and youngest son, Atlas, and three dogs. They have lived up Salmon Creek on Alanen Road for six years. What a fun family and the children have exemplary manners. Megan homeschools the kids, and Trenton works alongside his father-in-law, Lee, with the family business, Burnard Construction. Lee Burnard started the business in...
The Cathlamet Town Council on Monday worked on ordinances, settling some and tabling others as they neared the end of their 2023 budget development process. Council members tabled or failed to pass ordinances establishing a subdivision process and adopting portions of the International Property Maintenance Code. They did give final approval to ordinances relating to personnel policies and amending the 2022 annual budget, and they gave initial approval to an ordinance adopting the 2023 annual budget and salary schedule. Council members...
On Nov. 3, the Washington State Supreme Court decided it would hear Wahkiakum School District’s case against the State of Washington. Wahkiakum has been dealing with aging facilities for some time: an outdated electrical system, a leaky roof, no sprinkler system in the event of a fire, and HVAC issues for a start, and when the community voted against a 22 year $28.75 million bond in 2020 for renovations, Superintendent Brent Freeman and the board of directors decided to try something else. T...
Wahkiakum County commissioners this week took yet one more step toward setting budgets for 2023. In public hearings Monday, citizens complained about increases in property taxes, and commissioners indicated they might not increase some tax levies. Final action will come later this month. By law, the commission can increase the county property tax collection 1 percent every year; a higher increase needs voter approval. Commissioners adopted a resolution certifying levies for junior taxing districts, who, for the most part, claimed the 1 percent...
The Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners listened to reports and reorganized for the next year at their meeting on Tuesday. General Manager Dan Kay reported on a message from the Public Power Council: moving forward, utilities throughout the state are acting as one public power with the same contract with Bonneville Power Administration. “PPC is doing a good job of bringing us together,” he said. “There is a real strong push to make sure no utility is left behind.” He added that the Wah...

Wahkiakum County officials are nearing the end of the development of their 2023 budgets. On Tuesday, the board of commissioners met as the supervisors of the county's four flood control zone districts and set assessments and budget amounts for 2023. Next Monday, 9:30 a.m., commissioners will reconvene their recessed Nov. 22 meeting to hold public hearings on potential property tax increases and the final budget. In the preliminary budget, the county's Current Expense Fund, which includes most courthouse departments, totals $7.8 million....
Election results are in and certified. Wahkiakum County Prosecutor Dan Bigelow held on to his seat, winning a close race against challenger Holly McKeen by a 75 vote margin, 1,278 to 1,203. In the Wahkiakum County Commissioner Distict 3 race, incumbent Gene Strong widened the gap with a 1,574 to 708 win over challenger Blair Brady, a former commissioner. The Wahkiakum Emergency Communications Systems and Facilities Sales and Use Tax was approved by a vote of 1,635 for to 898 against. Results...
“Never settle” seemed to be the big message of the Wahkiakum School District Board of Directors meeting on November 22. Superintendent Brent Freeman said that security updates were progressing at the district, and while he’d given so much thought to the electrical system and other things in the past, it was the doors that day that had him asking questions about decisions made over the years to settle for less in district facilities. After finding outdated doors and hardware that was even older...

Updated December 2, 2022 On Wednesday, the Washington State Supreme Court decided it would hear Wahkiakum School District’s case against the State of Washington. Surprise! Just weeks after learning their application for a state Recreation and Conservation Office (RCO) grant to construct Waterfront Park had been rated too low for funding, Town of Cathlamet officials learned last week that, indeed, RCO would award funds for the project. Mayor David Olson said Monday that the award would be for the town's application in the two-year 2020 funding cycle, not the latest application for the 2022 cycle. The town's 2020 application had been ranked in 24th positio...
The Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce will hold their annual Tree Lighting Celebration this Saturday in front of the Wahkiakum County Courthouse. Sheriff Mark Howie will start the festivities at 4:30 p.m. The crowd will sing carols until the arrival of Santa Claus at 4:45 in a Cathlamet Fire Truck. “Santa will get off the truck, shimmy through the crowd, and light the tree at 5 p.m.,” Chamber Director Monica Budd said. Afterwards, Santa will head to the Hotel Cathlamet to greet kids and the you...
The Wahkiakum Animal Advocate Group held a Holiday Pet Food Drive on Saturday at the Elochoman Slough Marina. They took in $130 in cash donations, 411 pounds of dry food and 390 cans of dog and cat food. "It was a good day and our pet food pantry is stocked for the time being," Anita Orchin, left, said. I don’t know why I was so distracted that day. I’ve gotten into this bad habit of popping up the toaster to check the toast. I did it again that day, and pushed it back down before wandering off into another room, puttering, my mind on a million things. When I headed back toward the kitchen, I found smoke roiling on the ceiling in my hallway. It was only then that I remembered my toast. It was even smokier in the kitchen. I turned off the toaster and pulled the plug, so very thankful I did...
Thanks to funding secured by Wahkiakum Health and Human Services and volunteers at the Wahkiakum Community Garden, as well as some other Good Samaritans, there will be more fresh produce available at local food banks for a longer period of time each year, as part of a combined effort to combat food insecurity in our community. "It's always a question with us, regarding what we supply to the food banks," Wahkiakum Community Garden Volunteer Chris Holmes said. "Two questions, are we supplying...
