The restrooms at Erickson Park are closed indefinitely after vandals repeatedly caused damage to the property, leaving town officials wondering how to move forward. A group of local women enjoyed a cool down after a water aerobics class at the Cathlamet pool on Tuesday evening. The class is offered from 7:30-8:30 a.m. and again from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. There is also a lap swim from 6:30-7:30 a.m. and 5:30-6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Effective 12:01 a.m., Tuesday, July 4, officials from Wahkiakum County will enact a ban on all outdoor burning. As of July 4, all land clearing, residential and silvicultural burning is banned until further notice. This burn ban does not apply to federally managed land within Wahkiakum County. Because of staffing issues, the vaccine clinic hosted by Wahkiakum Health and Human Services every Monday and Wednesday is on hiatus as of July 5. The public nurse at WHHS recently tendered her resignation, and the department is actively seeking a new registered nurse. The clinic will resume when the position is filled. Wahkiakum County commissioners met briefly Wednesday to approve three expenditures. The first was the renewal of the county 911 contract. The commissioners approved the payment of $557,475 for the annual contract. The sheriff's office requested and the commissioners approved the hire of a corrections officer. Sheriff Howie was pleased that he was able to find a local person who is qualified for the job. It was a quiet day when I visited St. James Family Center the week after school got out for the summer, but teachers assured me that would change in the coming weeks.
