Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday approved a road closure on Eden Valley Road and addressed issues relating to operations of courts. Eden Valley Road will have a short closure Sept. 20, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to replace a culvert. "This is the first step to try to control flooding in the winter time," commented County Engineer Paul Lacy. The work will take place at the South Creek crossing. Commissioners and court officials brainstormed a response to a recent state supreme court rule that will prohibit superior, district and municipal courts...
Because September is Fall Prevention Month, it’s a good time to remind residents that a fall prevention class is being offered at Hope House. The class started up again in April after being brought to a halt two years ago with the advent of covid-19. The class, which is taught by Sharon Selby and Vicki Skeers, started in 2017. “I have quite a few folks that come,” Selby said. “It’s targeted towards people 65 and above. The class’s format focuses on achieving strength, flexibility and balance...

Fishing is good, I heard a fellow say recently. Catching? He had a very different word for that. Luckily, fishing was profitable for seven fishermen in last week's Hook the Hawg 2 fishing derby sponsored by the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce and Wahkiakum County Port 1. While several people caught a fish, the seven, representing the top 10 percent of the entries, took home some prize money, all of which was generated by entry fees. There were 70 adult entries and three youths participating for...
Wahkiakum Community Network (WCN) is conducting its annual community survey to find out how people in Wahkiakum County believe issues like alcohol, hard drugs, cannabis, bullying, and suicide are affecting the youth and general public. The survey is available online and takes about three to five minutes to complete. It asks questions like, “How easy do you think it is for youths to access cannabis in middle school? Or high school?” “The data we get from it gets combined with the Healthy Use s...
Eva Malerich and Krist Novoselic are leading a major renovation project of the historic Deep River Church. It's a major project with windows sent out to be redone, rotted outside wall boards being replaced, the steeple being totally rebuilt, the building being painted and more. The goal is to have the work done and the church ready for the Christmas concert. The Deep River Church is on the National Historic Register, as is the Grays River Covered Bridge. Western Wahkiakum County is honored to...

The Cathlamet Yacht Club, which started in 2008, finds its home at the Elochoman Slough Marina in Cathlamet, and is populated by members from the community, as well as others who live outside Wahkiakum County. They've found common ground: They are a social group, interested in people, service, boats and boating, and they love this community and this location on the Columbia River. "We got tired of going to Astoria," Dan Cary, a Cathlamet resident and one of the founding members said, laughing....
Avian influenza, or bird flu, was detected in a small domestic flock in Cowlitz County last week, according to a press release from the Washington State Department of Agriculture. The fair is only as good as we are, it seems to me. It's not a traveling show that comes to visit the county every year. We have to create our own fun. It's a chance to celebrate who we are and, I think, a perfect opportunity for some good natured competition. That's why I decided to issue the pie baking challenge this year. I'm so glad I contacted the Woman's Club, and that they ran with it, making the challenge even better with their support, pie kits, sign up sheets, pictures, and certificate...
"We had a wonderful fair," Fair Manager Patty Dursteler said. "It was probably the best fair we've had since I took over as manager in 2013. There were a lot more people. We doubled our gate from 2019." Dursteler thinks the new asphalt and the beer garden had something to do with the bigger turnout, and was pleased to report the fair had more entries than usual. As for pies, there were aplenty, 24 in fact. I entered a pie for the first time, and it turns out I wasn't the only one to do so. [For...
Wahkiakum School District Board of Directors heard about improvements made by custodial and maintenance staff at the district, an improved phone system thanks to Wahkiakum West, and the plan for opening the school for the academic year, which begins next week. Superintendent Brent Freeman said there was another HVAC failure at the district, which had to be replaced immediately as it was used to keep computer equipment cool. “I didn’t have a choice or an option but to replace it,” Freeman said. ...
Wahkiakum County commissioners made plans to appoint members to the Grays River Habitat Enhancement District and touched on other issues when they met Tuesday. The enhancement district is involved in efforts to improve flooding and drainage issues in the Valley. Membership on its board of commissioners waned in the past couple years, and efforts to reconstitute the board filled two of the three seats on the commission. County commission Chair Gene Strong said Tuesday that one of the current habitat board commissioners, Krist Novoselic, is stepp...

Brenda White opened Aunt B's Grooming on Main Street in Cathlamet last month, and old clients and new ones are keeping her busy. White has been grooming dogs for nearly 15 years. She worked for a wind turbine company for several years prior to that, but when she got laid off, she decided it was high time she started following her own dreams. When White was young, she wanted to be a veterinarian. It was too late for that particular dream, but in her own tenacious way, she found a substitute that...

Northwest Steam Society members rallied round Al Dunlap and the Cheng-Tze, his sternwheeler steamboat whose name is Taiwanese for Child of Honor, on Saturday to get them ready for the trip home after a festive weekend. True to its name, the vessel and its captain had attempted a rescue the day before, and with some new holes in the hull, it was going to need a bit of love before their next adventure. A steamboat had gotten caught in the pilings near the waterfront at Elochoman Slough Marina on...

Cathlamet town council members celebrated local cheese when they met Monday, and also considered various inedible items. Mayor David Olson began the night with a proclamation recognizing August 2022 as Little Island Creamery Brie Cheese Month. The honor was given in recognition of the local dairy’s win in the brie division of this year’s American Cheese Society competition. “There’s an awful lot of cheese lovers trying to pronounce Cathlamet right now,” Olson joked, adding that Lori Dietz, head cheesemaker for the creamery, is raising m...
