It's Memorial Day and I, like millions of Americans, are giving thanks and praise to the men and women who serve, those who proudly served, and those who gave their lives in the name of democracy and the people of this great nation. Thank you, one and all, for your dedication, commitment, and sacrifice. Memorial Day also marks the unofficial start of summer. The fact is summer technically begins on June 20 this year; but hey, it's warm, it's nice, the garden's growing, and Julie and I caught...
Herbs should have a place in your garden Herbs are, for the most part, easy to grow. Their needs are simple: plentiful sun, well drained soil, and periodic watering. Many of our herbs come from Mediterranean gardens and can handle heat and some lack of moisture. The aromatic oils in many of them were the plants’ way of storing energy when they shut down photosynthesis to conserve water on very hot days. Thyme, lavender, bay leaves, sage, and rosemary are woody plants that go semi-dormant in the winter, but don’t lose their foliage. They do ver...
Canada Thistle is a class C noxious weed native to Europe and Asia. This weed is considered noxious because, once established, it spreads quickly, replacing native plants. Canada Thistle grows in circular patches, spreading vegetatively through roots which can spread 10-12 feet in one season. The numerous seeds from this weed spread through the wind. It poses an economic threat to the agriculture industry by reducing crop yields. Though Canada Thistle is not known to be toxic, it grows 2 to 5...
On Thursday, I attended a meet-and-greet with local author A.S. Martin as part of the Appelo Archives Author Series. It was an informative afternoon discussing his debut book, Chasing Shadows, the first installment in the Whispers of the Forgotten series. The book's back cover synopsis provides a glimpse into the story: "Secrets never die; they wait. When Evelyn Hart inherits her grandmother's bookstore, she expects a quiet life filled with childhood memories. However, a hidden letter changes ev...
I recently interviewed Dennis Reid for our 16th installment of Reader's Fave, a casual talk with someone who shares their favorite book. Dennis lives in Skamokawa and serves as the PUD commissioner for District 3. We sat down at the PUD office for our conversation. As we began, Dennis shared the book Deep River by author Karl Marlantes, a historical novel centered on three siblings who leave Finland in the 1900s to escape Russian authorities and settle in Southwest Washington. Dennis read the bo...
During their meeting on Monday, May 5, Cathlamet Town Council passed a motion to "approve the Town of Cathlamet and Public Utility District No. 1 of Wahkiakum County Water and Wastewater System Asset Transfer and Improvement Agreement" effective that day. According to meeting's minutes, per the agreement, "PUD will assume operations of the water and wastewater treatment systems on August 1, 2025, to allow the Town the opportunity to inform the union of this transition with regards to the PUD consolidation." Prior to giving her staff report...
Wahkiakum County residents living west of KM Mountain have, at times, had to travel 30 minutes or more to go into the Sheriff’s Office in Cathlamet to do any in-person filing or to speak with staff. The Wahkiakum County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) recently reopened a field office at Johnson Park in Rosburg to, according to WCSO, “provide folks on the Westend better access to us, have face-to-face contact or, if they have any questions, comments, or even complaints that they might not call the main office line about.” The office being located...
Today is Thursday, May 22, the 142nd day of 2025. There are 223 days left in the year. Today in history: On May 22, 1960, the strongest earthquake recorded struck southern Chile. The magnitude 9.5 quake claimed 1,655 lives, left 2 million homeless and triggered a tsunami responsible for over 230 additional deaths in Hawaii, Japan and the Philippines. Also on this date: In 1939, the foreign ministers of Germany and Italy, Joachim von Ribbentrop and Galeazzo Ciano, signed a “Pact of Steel” committing their two countries to a military and pol...
I recently interviewed Ruby Hansen Murray for our 15th installment of Reader's Fave, a casual talk with someone who shares their favorite book. Ruby is a writer, photographer, and an award-winning columnist. She graciously accepted my short-notice invitation to sit and talk with her in the library. As we began, Ruby shared about not just a single book, but rather a series of books, Little House on the Prairie, along with her thoughts about the author. Before we began discussing the Little House...

Each candidate delivered a heartfelt speech, sharing their vision for...
The Department of Defense (DOD) has the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA), whose mission is to provide the fullest possible accounting for our missing personnel to their families and nation. When American personnel remain captive, missing, or otherwise unaccounted for at the conclusion of hostilities, the DOD accounting community becomes the responsible agent for determining the fate of the missing and, where possible, recovering them alive or recovering and identifying the remains of the dead worldwide. For those killed in action, the...
A new proposal asks Wahkiakum Community Network Coalition (WCNC) to take a bold step in inclusion by recognizing the community as a safe place for autistic individuals. This would affirm Wahkiakum’s support for dignity, belonging, and neurodiversity at a time when national policies threaten those very values. Submitted on Tuesday May 13, the proposal calls for a public statement and community outreach plan to protect local autistic residents from non-consensual data collection and harmful stigma. “This is a chance for Wahkiakum to lead the way...
DAMP. This past weekend was a bit soggy but how soggy depends on where you were located. One friend of mine was experiencing "buckets" of rain just a few miles east of me, while I was just sitting under some clouds with occasional sprinkles and a dash of sunshine thrown in. Now, nighttime was a different story, as it poured off and on Saturday night. I'm hoping that by the end of the month we have some drier weather showing up since there are many events planned and they are much more enjoyable when the sun is shining! Regardless, we are much...
In May 1868, the first Decoration Day was established to remember and honor those who lost their lives during the Civil War. After World War I, the day evolved to honor all service members who died in military service. Following World War II, the name Memorial Day became more widely used. It wasn't until 1971 that it was officially designated as a national holiday, celebrated on the last Monday in May. During World War II, approximately 16 million Americans served in the United States Armed...
You may have noticed a little change outside the office at J.A. Wendy Elementary School. A new tool has been installed not only for all students to blow off steam, but particularly serves as a wonderful aide for children with autism and special needs. The new sensory pathway was installed by volunteer Paul Lawrence last month in honor of autism awareness and is perfectly situated outside the multipurpose room and office hallway. Grades K - 8th utilize the space on a daily basis, making it a fun...
I'm sitting on the back porch this morning with my black dog, Abigail at my feet. Both of us listen to the boats leave the Elochoman Marina for another day of trolling back and forth. Dropping something magical, colorful, and wrapped in or containing a small piece of Bumblebee product damn near to the bottom. Easing back in the captain's chair with the cap to the old school Stanley thermos filled to the brim and a hunk of fresh-made pumpkin bread at the ready. It's a nice morning, albeit a bit...

Emma Dean, a 17-year-old volunteer, organized poppies to be sold through the Louis Larsen Unit 68 Auxiliary before Memorial Day. The poppies are a symbol of peace, sacrifice, and veterans past and present. Poppies are also a symbol of sleep and hope. A poem titled "In Flanders Field" was written by Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae o May 3, 1915 during World War I. McCrae was inspired to write this poem because his friend, Lieutenant Alexis Helmer, died in the second Battle of Ypres. His poem expresses many feelings of loss and handing down the...

Funds created from the pavers will go to support the museum's general operations. "The people on the bricks are the history of Rainier and it's honoring our families and different people from here," said ROHM Board...
Offering fresh fruit juices, smoothies, ice cream, salads, sandwiches, and California sushi rolls, Rainier's Sabor Mixto & More opened its doors in May of 2024. Created and operated by Cicilia (CiCi) Diaz and Laura Bautista, Sabor Mixto & More has been a "dream come true" for the two to have their own business after spending two decades each in the food service industry. Still, the first year hasn't come without challenges. "It's been a struggle," said Diaz. "Sometimes, we get busy days, and...
With an estimated 19.8 million people playing in the U.S. in 2024, pickleball has been named the fastest growing sport, according to Sport and Fitness Industry Association (SFIA). The number represents a 45.8 percent increase from 2023. Pickleball is a paddle sport played on a court that combines the elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong. The court is much smaller than a traditional tennis court and uses a wiffle ball instead of a tennis ball. The naming is said to be inspired by the term “pickle boat” in rowing, which is a team com...

A levy increase was on the ballot twice in 2024 as a way to help cover rising jail operation costs, failing to pass both times. This latest ballot measure will not increase costs for residents but will maintain the existin...
