Cemulini also asked about how...
On Friday and Saturday, Aug. 15-16, the annual Garlic Festival will take place at Copes Park, located at 60 Lillich St. in Clatskanie. This event was launched 10 years ago, but it was little more than an exercise in unfounded enthusiasm. The idea was solid, though, and the community has since embraced it as it grew into its current reality, a regional culinary and cultural attraction. Many of the folks that sampled the garlic that day recognized it as the base flavor of many of their favorite di...

With an eye toward maintaining and growing business relevance and sustainability within an ever-changing and challenging environment, a lot of thinking outside of the box has been going on within Wahkiakum West Communications, largely driven by CEO Ken Johnson. That thinking has resulted in the entry by Wahkiakum West into the video production field. As the company's expertise grew and gained recognition, it caught the attention of the Washington Filmworks Incentive Program as well as tourist ag...
During the PUD Board of Commissioners meeting Tuesday, Aug. 5, Commissioner Reed suggested considering hiring an assistant manager in lieu of the expansions the PUD has been undergoing recently. General Manager Dan Kay gave an update on the TOC water system consolidation. “I want to thank the Town staff and mayor for being very cordial and supportive during this transition,” said Kay, who explained that this has been an extremely busy time. Recent activity has included the establishment of high-speed internet at the water plants, the imp...
I recently interviewed Carlene Grangroth for our 25th installment of Reader's Fave, a casual interview with someone who shares their favorite book. Carlene lives in the Elochoman Valley, and we met up at Erickson Park for our conversation. Carlene shared "The Tattooist of Auschwitz" by Heather Morris. This novel touches on the Auschwitz concentration camp and is based on some true personal events. "I listened to it using the Libby app, and it took me about two months," Carlene said. Two months...
Wahkiakum County is facing a severe financial crisis, and county officials are taking urgent steps to address the situation. Recently, department heads and commissioners held tough discussions and made difficult decisions to reduce costs while maintaining essential services. The reality of the county’s financial situation and the impacts of the actions being taken are felt across every department. Since 2020, payroll c...

Got weeds? This time of year, Wahkiakum County has plenty. So what do you do with them? This week we will give you some ideas on disposal methods for noxious weed material. Disposal of noxious weed material can vary depending on the plant species, growth stage of the plant and quantity of plant material. General techniques: if plants are flowering, cut and bag flowers, when possible, to prevent seed development and dispersal. Seal bags and put them in the trash. If they have been treated with...

This will be the eighth year that Wahkiakum County has participated, with kids’ games, a raffle, hot dogs and root b...
JUST RIGHT. I have to say, concerning the recent weather, the last few days have been just perfect for me: cloudy in the morning hours, then sunshine later on. No crazy hot temps, and cooler temps in the evening, so my house doesn't heat up too much either; I have really enjoyed it. Now, I did hear that there were some showers in Cathlamet, but surprisingly, we didn't get them, which was amazing as we folks in Skamokawa are usually the ones who get the most rain! Actually, we could use some rain, so if it shows up, I will be quite happy. By...
I recently interviewed Mary Hogue and Cathy Cruikshank for our 24th installment of Reader's Fave, a casual interview with someone who shares their favorite book. I met up with Mary and Cathy in Skamokawa at Viewpoint Landing (formerly Skamokawa Landing). Mary and her husband, Jarrod Hogue, own and manage Viewpoint Landing. When I first reached out to Mary for an interview, she kindly insisted that I interview both her and Cathy together. Who was I to argue? It was a wonderful interview. Thank yo...
For our final installment, we’re looking at support resources and tips and tools to help in the pursuit of justice against stalking perpetrators - be it individual, proxy-stalkers, or multi-perpetrator community-based stalking and harassment - all of which happen in Columbia County on a regular basis. Being informed and aware is a critical line of defense. Capturing and tracking evidence as it happens is one of the most important things you can do. Even if the detail seems “insignificant,” it’s crucial to document everything. Keep a Stalkin...
Solid waste disposal fees at the Columbia County Transfer Station increased by 2.2 percent effective July 1, 2025, following an annual Consumer Price Index (CPI) adjustment approved by the Columbia County Board of Commissioners. As required under Board Order 6-2010, disposal rates at the Transfer Station are updated each year based on the previous year’s CPI. The most recent CPI increase of 2.2 percent resulted in updated rates for residential and commercial customers. Some of the solid waste fees include commercial tipping fee ($112.36 per t...
Columbia County Sheriff’s Office “National Night Out” celebration returns on Tuesday, August 5, from 5-8 p.m. at the main office location at 901 Port Ave. in Saint Helens. “This will be our 5th year holding CCSO’s National Night Out celebration,” said Columbia County Sheriff Brian Pixley. “Events like this help to foster relationships between public safety and the community as a whole. This event has grown over the last few years, and we have several other partners who show up to take part in this community celebration as well. This is a tim...
It's funny the things that make me smile. Just this morning, I'm sitting on the back porch, coffee in one hand, dog at my feet. I'm listening to the rooster down the valley greet the day and my girl-chickens waking up for another; when, from stage right, a tiny rufous hummingbird makes his jet-like appearance. As they often do, he makes the rounds of the many blossoms on the porch. A sip from the impatiens, a drink from the Albutilon, a split second to check out the early mums; the geraniums....
Last week, I shared about our first summer cleaning up our property in Grays River. When we were planning our move, the question we heard most often was, "You know it rains a lot there, right?" Of course, we were aware of that. It's the Pacific Northwest; everyone knows it. However, knowing about it in theory and experiencing it firsthand are two entirely different things. In Sept. 2021, the rain began, and for months, it felt as though it would never stop. Locals even mentioned that this...
This year's Bald Eagle Days brought the county's best Saturday. The parade featured dozens of floats, cars, and even horses. Grand Marshall Loraine Bjorge Bauer was driven down the parade via a beautiful classic convertible....
Councilmember Crystal Baker brought an item to the agenda during the Monday, July 21 session of Cathlamet Town Council. Having spoken with board members from the Wahkiakum County Historical Society, Crystal, the newest member of Town Council, inquired about the communication between council members and the Historical Society - specifically the museum - from early August to mid November. According to Crystal, a letter was sent on Aug. 5 requesting that Council "not touch" the tree at Strong Park. Much to the surprise of the Historical Society, t...
